Top video as ever Gemma 👍 I remember back in '99, I used to work at Electronics Boutique, before it became GAME (and then gradually went downhill). I got some incredible bargains back then as a staff member - bought an N64 for £5.99 (not to mention SM64 and Goldeneye for £3 each), and a month later I got a PSX for £7.99. Bearing in mind this was 1999, and the Dreamcast had only just been released, most people were staggered. It was some special pre-owned code they had for staff only, and could be used only occasionally for doing hard work 😏 the irony was that I actually preferred the little independent games shop, Games Carousel, just down the road. The owner there was terrific, he let you come in and play new releases, and often gave deals to loyal customers. And boy, did he know his games. I'm hesitant whether or not to say more than you Gemma!

Holy moly, those consoles were still very current and getting good releases in 1999! You got them for peanuts :) I had forgotten the name Electronic Boutique until you wrote it, I vaguely remember the name. Now you mention that game took them over, does anyone remember if Electronic Boutique in Leeds was on Albion Street? There was certainly A computer game shop there.

It’s a shame Game stores turned more into toy shops. It’s just like GameStop in Ireland before they started closing them all down. I wish I had footage to Game back in the 90s and early 2000s. Two floors full of Sega, Nintendo, Sony and PC games. The best days of my gaming life. Only CEX (minus the walls of DVDs) and a few retro game shops still give this feeling

I bought my current Gfx card from there, just over £100 for a second hand GTX1660 :) They gave me a year's warranty which is reassuring, Sod's Law it will go bust just after a year! Thinking about it, I can't remember where I've put the bloody receipt...

When it comes to physical copies I like to know what I am buying and physical copies allow you to see what your are going to buy or not buy! Digital doesn't really allow this unless you research it, but I prefer to look around in shops.

A GAME, I haven't seen one of those in the wild since they disappeared from Sweden back in 2015. Over here we no longer have any Video Game franchise chains anymore, only a few independent stores spread out over the whole country. It is a shame to see that GAME carries almost no games anymore though, a shame indeed. I just remember the days when there was games as far as the eyes could see in their stores.

There's no future for game if they only focus on modern games and toys, they'll totally become a toy vendor when future game consoles go 100% digital after the PS5 etc is discontinued. If they invested into retro they'd have a long future for their physical stores.

My game store has moved from the high street to a big shopping centre with lifts, escalators, near to a sports direct shop. Enjoyed the video gemma. Thought you were going to buy that care bear for a minute. The TMNT turtles figures look cool, not that costly for the TMNT bus, again thought you were going to buy it. Good video. :) 👍👋

The A500 mini is only worth purchasing if you're going to add games, on it's own tbh it's a bit naff imo. C64 mini is the same deal, but the stick it comes with is awful. The My arcade Space invaders cab though is the one!

It is off putting to see games on shelves at £70 & £90 and for just the base version 🤦 No wonder the store was empty. I started gaming at the start of the Mega Drive era and £50-£60 then for a new game is still expensive today. The pricing for PS5/Xbox series games seem ridiculous.

@@leecroft1983ex owner of Newcastle United FC and CEO of Sports Direct, amongst other businesses. Famous for once touring a Sports Direct warehouse with the media and brandishing a roll of £50 notes at the security desk, all while the focus was on Sports Direct for their zero hours contracts and almost Victorian workhouse conditions. He's not a guy where the words 'business' and 'morals' are found together. He'll rip what remaining charm and appreciation there is in GAME and march off with what money's left. Looks very empty shop game shop. What's going to happen when it goes all digital games. But I do think it's a bad thing going to digital games. What I like to know why digital games so expensive. You would of thought they be cheaper as they don't have cost of producing disc and cases.

I walked into my local sports direct afew weeks back. The game section is an embarrassment, bearly any games for a start with the exception of what's currently charting. No longer any used titles and just a puny little basket of pokemon and animal crossing plushies. In fact, they had more game merch than actual games. I would be very surprised if that entire company has a year left in it. I don't like to see the demise of any videogame shop. But in this case they realy deserve bankruptcy. I did pick up the 50th aniversary care bear from game for the missus birthday though. Hes still mint in box lol. Carealot i think hes called ...even the missus cant remeber his name, and she bloody owns him lol

I find Game to be the most boring store to walk around in. It has turned into a lame toy shop selling the usual plastic pop culture crap you see everywhere. I don't have much interest in modern gaming anymore (modern gaming has gotten so boring, over hyped big triple A games that mostly fail to live up to the hype and most indie games look and play the same being some rogue like thing with only a few bright stars) I wish they would get rid of the plastic pop culture toy fluff and go big with retro gaming stuff. I spend most of my gaming time now on my Switch (both my Series X and PS5 are gathering dust) and playing on my older systems, spending a lot of time since lockdown playing on my Sega Saturn. The library on that system is stunning, always called it the Aladdin's cave of gaming systems. Ebay has been my only route regarding that system, thankfully i began collecting for it years and years ago before prices went silly.
@Nightopian1982 Жыл бұрын
I think you and I would get on! I've totally lost interest in modern games. Endless open world adventures/first person action games with photo-realistic graphics seems to be all everyone focuses on anymore. Give me a Saturn and a copy of Nights above any of that, any day. The library is superb, as you say. It's still my favourite console of all time, even more so than the SNES for me.

You know, I think they've provided me with a few fairly decent things over recent years, but the bad has definitely outweighed the good. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to return online orders due to damaged or missing carts/discs. I got a copy of Shenmue 2 once, and they forgot discs 3 and 4. I got a refund, reordered it, and I kid you not, they sent another copy with discs 1 and 2 missing instead! You couldn't make it up. I also ordered Zelda, Majora's Mask, and got a cartridge with three damaged gold contacts upon inspection. I was utterly furious, because I'd bought the expansion pak at the same time. Thankfully, a replacement copy from an independent store in Birmingham worked! I swear they barely test anything at CEX.

Game is a variety store because the gaming industry is dying. I work for game and have done for 16 yrs, and all i ever hear it hate that we now sell toys and board games. So does that make Smyths and super markets sad for selling video games. The company is investing in what makes money, its good business. Also your "THATS ON GAME PASS" comment really didnt make sense as the copy you picked up was on PS4. So unless you have Game Pass on your PS4 then yeh if you want to play that game, you do need to buy it.
