I think one of the biggest issues with Deathloop is that it's so hard to explain what it is (including for the devs themselves prelaunch) that people who come in with different expectations will have completely different opinions on how well it executes them. Some people seem to wish it was more rogue-like (a la Mooncrash), some wish it was more of an FPS, others more like Dishonored. I also avoided following clues (as far as through the menu or waypoints) and so I had a very different experience than most people who found the game too linear or hand hold-y. I explored the way I would Dishonored and didn't really understand the complaints in that regard because my experience was very different. But it was refreshing to see a gameplay oriented title get that kind of praise as opposed to the usual cinematic story game with passable at best gameplay that the industry has been trending towards more and more lately.
@poodlehead909
@poodlehead909 Жыл бұрын
The game director wanted deathloop to be completely different to the release. She wanted it to be less linear and more open for exploration. Once the game was play tested they had to change the direction of the game which is why the execution and the premotion aren't the same.

Deathloop is a game I can enjoy from time to time with the use of slabs and a variety of guns but the games biggest flaw is that there is no real incentive IMO for anyone to finish it. You just stop the loop and then do it all over again which is what you do regardless. The "boss fights" are also a let down seeing how much the visionaries were hyped up. If 3 slabs could be used with reprise the gameplay would go to another level at least despite the story flaws but without that you just have a less good dishonored 3 with a worse story and watered down gameplay. Still fun though just more of a 6-7.5/10 than a 10/10🤷‍♂

Have regen energy made the power fantasy feel even better than dishonored (having limited resources caused me to play really conservatively). Was a bit worried I'd have to play around a timer, super glad that's not here; I prefer to play at my pace. The story had me more interested than most, the ending kept just enough ambiguity to keep me hoping for more. PvP was also very casual, made invading and being invaded really fun. Only two abilities was kind of a bummer but I'll take it over having to wait forever for limited mana regen. 9/10

They have so many new things they could experiment with: 1. 3v3 elimination match (So they could make up a story where all the colts and julianas somehow are all in the same loop and need to fight to death) 2.a story mode about juliana, (DLC) how she even got colt and everybody else to do this operation in the first place. 3.another part of the island could be included for a extra level for weapons, abilities and even a extra person to kill. 4. A PvE could be a good one with all players being colt and just fighting of the etrernalists and it gets processingly harder, with of course you earning points for abilities and weapons. 5.they could obviously make a DLC story mode where you play as the previous colt you seen in the first mission(the one who tells you the code is on the postcard) who's story Is everything leading up to that's situation I enjoyed deathloop but I feel like there is more they could have added.

Deathloop had fun combat, solid art direction, endearing characters, a good amount of customization, and great level design when compared to most games (just not Dishonored). It has a neat premise that could have been executed better, but I still think it handled it fairly well. The only thing I truly think it did poorly, and the warped, corroded linchpin that’s causing everything praiseworthy to wobble, is the enemy AI. Why bother with the great level design or the inventive build variety when you’re unopposed unless Juliana shows? What consequence do the roguelite elements have when it’s so hard to lose? It is only one flaw, but detracts heavily from the experience.

What was most bizzare for me regarding Deathloop was its marketing, especially early. A lot of people actually believed that this is a multiplayer heavy coop game instead of a single player game because of how the trailer were presented. They really gave an impression of a multiplayer first game.

Just looking at the menu showing the times of day and areas to choose from is another reminder of how disappointing this game turned out to be. The central concept is SO GOOD and was done so well in Prey: Mooncrash, and yet here most of the actual time and exploration aspects of the loop are based not on how your actions in the loop but instead on picking things on a menu. Similarly, you don't find the final solution by trial and error, repetition, and experimentation, but instead by following a prescribed series of objectives. The studio stripped the best aspects of their previous games out of Deathloop for reasons I still don't quite understand, and it's not a surprise to me that the general consensus among most reviewers (and many publications now) is that other Arkane titles were far more deserving of this kind of reception, while Deathloop arguably was a big step backward for them.

Are the extreme high critic scores some sort of journalist' compensation for Arkane's earlier work which often didn't get the recognition it deserved? I believe some gaming journalists (and also in other media actually like movies and books) see their taste as something really special or clever. The more en vogue or outspoken a product, the more they love it. But general public just wants a good game. In my mind that also explains some discrepancy between the general public and journalism.

I recently played Deathloop when it popped up on gamepass. I enjoyed it for about 4 hours and then was kinda done with it. It didn’t really hold my attention, I didn’t find any of the weapons or powers particularly interesting. The game also felt small. Normally I don’t mind playing the same areas over and over again, hell I’ve played probably every mission on MGSV dozens of times, same with the Sniper Elite games and Hitman. I didn’t find anything super compelling to bring me back to Deathloop. It’s not a bad game by any means, just didn’t really appeal to me after the first few loops.

Deathloop was a great game with a great story and premise. Just finished it and enjoyed every single Loop. Every single new piece of information gathered was an accomplishment and finding all the secrets of the island. I don’t understand all the hate this game gets. Yeah there’s some flaws I think could’ve been better executed but it’s not for some people and that’s okay. Puzzles were fun and gathering intel and going back to explore the areas at different times of day and seeing how they change was satisfying and fun to do. This game gets a bad wrap and it doesn’t deserve it at all. Overall it’s a 8/10 in my book. Colts history and slowly unraveling what brought him to the island and who the Visionaries are to him was interesting and kept me motivated the whole time. Wish more people knew how great this game is

i finished it twice, it was amazing each time. I loved it thoroughly. For me the game is a good 8/10 or 9/10. Probably one of the most innovative games I've played in a long time. But the game has its problems such as its weak AI, mediocre gun-play, as well as the time-loop mechanics, which confuses a lot of people as you have to pay attention and remember key details. For me the best part was that the 4 maps together with the time-loop mechanics made the game enjoyable and pretty easy to play. Games nowadays either go for an open-world setup, where the entire world is a single large scene that you roam, or a sequence of 12-16 different maps/worlds that you pass through. Deathloop removes that and simply gives you 4 fairly small maps that change over time. This allows the player to learn the setup and become proficient at the game quickly. The time loop mechanics and the story-line keeps everything fresh. Spectacular! :-)

Deathloop is the manifestation of the fear I have of roguelite/likes getting as popular as they have been and big AAA studios catching on going like "Wait, you mean we can re-use a few levels, re-use assets and have the players constantly go through those same aspects of the game over and over again with nothing really new..... as long as it's 'roguelite' and.....we'll get praised for it? Fucking sign us the fuck up." And I like roguelites, don't get me wrong. Hades is one of my favorite games of all time. But that formula and marketing it as THAT is like a fucking godsend for big budget companies that are doing this shit anyway. But even for fans of Arkane games I don't understand how anyone can give this a perfect or close to perfect rating. It's a mish mash of all of their games and none of it is done as well as they were in those games they drew it from. Like Dishonored 1 and 2. Both better Arkane games, better games than Deathloop.

In my opinion it's a 8/10, it's well crafted, the story is pretty good, the mystery kept me hooked till the end even if I found the ending a bit lackluster. Gameplay is solid, not groundbreaking like it was in dishonored 1/2 (which I think are 9/10 and classics), but competent. Setting was pretty cool, music was awesome. it came out a time when nothing else was, and in a era in videogames where we have become used to unpolished turds full of microtransactions being sold to us for 70$. Had it been scored a 9/10 (which in my opinion is still inflated) people wouldnt have batted an eye. 10/10 should be reserved for masterpieces, which this isnt. It's not a 7/10 either.

This was a classic example of the disconnect between what reviewers want in a game and what consumers want. Deathloop is by no means a bad game (it's competently made with some clever gameplay), but the fact that it got 10's is what's so disconcerting. The whole point of a "play as you like" game is just that: you should be able to approach any given situation in any ways you want. Deathloop, oddly enough, has zero replay value. How, in a game structured in the way it is, is there only (and I mean only) one solution to the game? How stifling it felt knowing that there was only one way to kill all the Visionaries and "beat" the game. There should be at MINIMUM 3 ways to kill all the Visionaries. It was so boring funnelling them to the Wolf's party, with only the slabs offering different tangible ways to progress the game.

Um, as someone who played the HELL out of Dishonored 1-2 like crazy... yeah, being a big fan of Arkane did nothing to make me -like- Deathloop. If anything, it added to the disappointment because of realizing they'd watered down their own gameplay. In fact, several aspects, like the handholding, are precisely the opposite of what I expect from an Arkane game. They did this to make their style of game more palatable to people who DON'T typically play their games. That's why you're seeing Deathloop review better - it's easier to beat and has shinier, zanier presentation. Typically, if you have good presentation and aren't too hard to beat, that's sadly what seems to get an 8 out of 10 minimum these days. Also, no, professional game critics don't typically even get to choose their assignments if they're working for bigger sites. Like, I'm a big horror fan - yet one site kept giving me strategy games to review instead. Honestly it's pretty baffling at times, and other times it's down to who's available for the work. Like, that infamous Polygon Doom 2016 video? JRPG fan got assigned that because the FPS-inclined staff were busy on other content. There's other historic examples of this, like how Game Informer always has a separate person previewing games as opposed to the person reviewing them. For example, Mike Futter was super on board for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, but the actual reviewer gave it an "average". Same for Army of Two with Megan Marie as opposed to Dan Ryckert who dismissed it out of hand.
