Prey launched with a lot of technical issues that brought its scores down, and was more of a hardcore immersive sim. Deathloop is completely different. It has immersive sim elements but it’s not trying to be Dishonored or Prey, and it seems like a lot of fans of those games were disappointed because they wanted it to be just that. I think one of the biggest issues with Deathloop is that it's so hard to explain what it is (including for the devs themselves prelaunch) that people who come in with different expectations will have completely different opinions on how well it executes them. Some people seem to wish it was more rogue-like (a la Mooncrash), some wish it was more of an FPS, others more like Dishonored. I also avoided following clues (as far as through the menu or waypoints) and so I had a very different experience than most people who found the game too linear or hand hold-y. I explored the way I would Dishonored and didn't really understand the complaints in that regard because my experience was very different. But it was refreshing to see a gameplay oriented title get that kind of praise as opposed to the usual cinematic story game with passable at best gameplay that the industry has been trending towards more and more lately.
@poodlehead9092 жыл бұрын
The game director wanted deathloop to be completely different to the release. She wanted it to be less linear and more open for exploration. Once the game was play tested they had to change the direction of the game which is why the execution and the premotion aren't the same.

Deathloop is a game I can enjoy from time to time with the use of slabs and a variety of guns but the games biggest flaw is that there is no real incentive IMO for anyone to finish it. If 3 slabs could be used with reprise the gameplay would go to another level at least despite the story flaws but without that you just have a less good dishonored 3 with a worse story and watered down gameplay. A PvE could be a good one with all players being colt and just fighting of the etrernalists and it gets processingly harder, with of course you earning points for abilities and weapons. 5.they could obviously make a DLC story mode where you play as the previous colt you seen in the first mission(the one who tells you the code is on the postcard) who's story Is everything leading up to that's situation I enjoyed deathloop but I feel like there is more they could have added.

Deathloop had fun combat, solid art direction, endearing characters, a good amount of customization, and great level design when compared to most games (just not Dishonored). It has a neat premise that could have been executed better, but I still think it handled it fairly well. The only thing I truly think it did poorly, and the warped, corroded linchpin that’s causing everything praiseworthy to wobble, is the enemy AI. Why bother with the great level design or the inventive build variety when you’re unopposed unless Juliana shows? What consequence do the roguelite elements have when it’s so hard to lose? It is only one flaw, but detracts heavily from the experience.

Deathloop is the manifestation of the fear I have of roguelite/likes getting as popular as they have been and big AAA studios catching on going like "Wait, you mean we can re-use a few levels, re-use assets and have the players constantly go through those same aspects of the game over and over again with nothing really new..... as long as it's 'roguelite' and.....we'll get praised for it? Fucking sign us the fuck up." And I like roguelites, don't get me wrong. Hades is one of my favorite games of all time. But that formula and marketing it as THAT is like a fucking godsend for big budget companies that are doing this shit anyway. But even for fans of Arkane games I don't understand how anyone can give this a perfect or close to perfect rating. It's a mish mash of all of their games and none of it is done as well as they were in those games they drew it from. Like Dishonored 1 and 2. Both better Arkane games, better games than Deathloop.

i finished it twice, it was amazing each time. I loved it thoroughly. For me the game is a good 8/10 or 9/10. Probably one of the most innovative games I've played in a long time. But the game has its problems such as its weak AI, mediocre gun-play, as well as the time-loop mechanics, which confuses a lot of people as you have to pay attention and remember key details. For me the best part was that the 4 maps together with the time-loop mechanics made the game enjoyable and pretty easy to play. Games nowadays either go for an open-world setup, where the entire world is a single large scene that you roam, or a sequence of 12-16 different maps/worlds that you pass through. Deathloop removes that and simply gives you 4 fairly small maps that change over time. This allows the player to learn the setup and become proficient at the game quickly. The time loop mechanics and the story-line keeps everything fresh. Spectacular! :-)

Not sure I'd agree with saying Arkane fanboys/girls love Deathloop. It definitely isn't a 9 or 10/10 or up to scratch with Arkane's previous immersive sims. A lot of reviewers who loved Dishonored and Prey critiqued Deathloop for its more linear structure and crappy AI. I guess I'm thinking of smaller names but Arkane fans are a rare breed.
@4589dude2 жыл бұрын
Another issue is that it isn't an actual time loop. The day is split into four phases within which you can spend as much time as you like doing whatever. I was excited by the premise of this game because I expected it to have a ticking clock; one single day-night cycle to accomplish your task and where events and environments dynamically change as the day goes by. That would have added some much needed urgency and challenge to the game. What we got was far less interesting/engaging.

Are the extreme high critic scores some sort of journalist' compensation for Arkane's earlier work which often didn't get the recognition it deserved? I believe some gaming journalists (and also in other media actually like movies and books) see their taste as something really special or clever. The more en vogue or outspoken a product, the more they love it. But general public just wants a good game. In my mind that also explains some discrepancy between the general public and journalism.

@UnabridgedGamer2 жыл бұрын
Um, as someone who played the HELL out of Dishonored 1-2 like crazy... yeah, being a big fan of Arkane did nothing to make me -like- Deathloop. If anything, it added to the disappointment because of realizing they'd watered down their own gameplay. In fact, several aspects, like the handholding, are precisely the opposite of what I expect from an Arkane game. They did this to make their style of game more palatable to people who DON'T typically play their games. That's why you're seeing Deathloop review better - it's easier to beat and has shinier, zanier presentation. Typically, if you have good presentation and aren't too hard to beat, that's sadly what seems to get an 8 out of 10 minimum these days. Also, no, professional game critics don't typically even get to choose their assignments if they're working for bigger sites. Like, I'm a big horror fan - yet one site kept giving me strategy games to review instead. Honestly it's pretty baffling at times, and other times it's down to who's available for the work. Like, that infamous Polygon Doom 2016 video? JRPG fan got assigned that because the FPS-inclined staff were busy on other content. There's other historic examples of this, like how Game Informer always has a separate person previewing games as opposed to the person reviewing them. For example, Mike Futter was super on board for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, but the actual reviewer gave it an "average". Same for Army of Two with Megan Marie as opposed to Dan Ryckert who dismissed it out of hand.

For me, it's between 8 and 8.5. The story was awesome, but you won't grasp everything by the end unless you read every single note and complete every side quest. I do wish the game fully revealed the story before the final act of the game. The A.I. can be dumb at times, but I feel it's also what makes you feel like a badass as you slash off the heads of unsuspecting eternalists. There weren't really any boss fights in the game and it did make the visionaries almost the same as the eternalists. Juliana was always the toughest to best in my opinion, and not because she was really fun to fight against, but because she spawns outta nowhere and unloads enough rounds into you to make you feel like the unlucky target in a firing range. With all that, I still had an awesome time with Deathloop. It kept me hooked from start to finish with intriguing mysteries, fun discoveries, tight gameplay and a long list of other great features I'm too lazy to mention. I don't think it's a 10/10, but I do believe it was very much worth my time and money.
@smegma49992 жыл бұрын
This game is not a 10/10 but I feel like most of the points you made are moot because you didn’t play the game again, you just continued playing it, to play it again you reset colts progress, the whole point is to figure it out for yourself and build your arsenal, by the end colts power level is so strong that it is a reward to fly through levels you struggled with before now finally mastering the loop, and unlocking the real end game which is the pvp invasions meshing contextually with the non breaking the loop ending eternally having fun killing each other with Julianna. Its just a different game it wasn’t sold as a grand story it’s praised for its exceptional creative gameplay. Also it’s your choice to do things the same way over and over that’s not the fault of the game.
@BucklingSwashes2 жыл бұрын
Just looking at the menu showing the times of day and areas to choose from is another reminder of how disappointing this game turned out to be. The central concept is SO GOOD and was done so well in Prey: Mooncrash, and yet here most of the actual time and exploration aspects of the loop are based not on how your actions in the loop but instead on picking things on a menu. Similarly, you don't find the final solution by trial and error, repetition, and experimentation, but instead by following a prescribed series of objectives. The studio stripped the best aspects of their previous games out of Deathloop for reasons I still don't quite understand, and it's not a surprise to me that the general consensus among most reviewers (and many publications now) is that other Arkane titles were far more deserving of this kind of reception, while Deathloop arguably was a big step backward for them.

This was a classic example of the disconnect between what reviewers want in a game and what consumers want. Deathloop is by no means a bad game (it's competently made with some clever gameplay), but the fact that it got 10's is what's so disconcerting. The whole point of a "play as you like" game is just that: you should be able to approach any given situation in any ways you want. Deathloop, oddly enough, has zero replay value. How, in a game structured in the way it is, is there only (and I mean only) one solution to the game? How stifling it felt knowing that there was only one way to kill all the Visionaries and "beat" the game. There should be at MINIMUM 3 ways to kill all the Visionaries. It was so boring funnelling them to the Wolf's party, with only the slabs offering different tangible ways to progress the game.

I just never know what I’m doing, or what I’m supposed to be doing other than having to kill several main assassins but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with all of this tangled information to figure out where they are, let alone how I’m supposed to kill them all in a single loop… I don’t even know what that loop means. Enjoyed the art style and build up, but early in the tutorial stuff, I decided to stay behind at night and explore, and more or less accidentally killed Aleksis, the Visionary, amidst a barrage of idiotic enemies essentially running into my bullets. No skill involved, I just massacred the entire area, including the boss, having barely any idea what I was doing, no trinkets or slabs, and starter weapons without the ability to infuse. At that point, I no longer saw the game as a long adventure, but a series of arbitrary fights to pad a puzzle, and I didn't enjoy the world enough to care to push through the puzzle. It was neat, sure, but it just couldn't get there. I put a couple more hours in, to give it an honest shot, and eventually said it wasn't for me. I'm happy others love this, and I can see this a high score game for them, but a perfect 10 across the board just baffles me. Like, NOBODY felt the same as me? A 10 for all?? I was disappointed.
