I wanted to try and see if I could drive an alternative layout for Monaco, and with the Real Monaco track mod, I was able to see what kind of layout changes Monaco could have. This is NOT meant to be a better layout than the current one, just having some fun seeing what is possible. Inspired by the layout in Chain Bear’s Monaco video.

The extra turn before the tunnel, in my opinion they should drive it, because they have a bit longer straight an maybe more overtakes

It’s a good idea but it’s probably too dangerous to enter the tunnel with more speed, considering the blind corner and the closeness of the walls. Not to mention the speed they’d be carrying into the harbour section

there's been talks to actually do something like this for years now, there's a road and roundabout that would be perfect but it's just not happening and i can't remember why

@@kieroncraig3594 overtaking in the tunnel would be too dangerous, same thing just after the tunnel before the chicane (think of zhou this year without the amazing save and 30-50km/h faster)

@@escalator9734 so basically there's nothing we can do until the cars supposedly get smaller in 3 or so years and until then we might lose the race to some Sheikh cause people need overtakes and F1 needs money. Great

@@AmokCanuck it doesnt matter how small the cars get passing in monaco still will be nearly impossible. It been always like this. Only a change in the track can fix this.

@@FTRRacingTv Indeed. While I quite like the extra routes added to the existing configuration as they give a decent flow (not that the flow is indecent presently), overtaking wouldn't be any easier.

Yeah if they could get the safety. It's narrower than the trust of the circuit which is already an issue and incredibly bumpy. Simple resurfacing eould take care of the second part. The other issue is that there are regulations on how quickly a track can narrow, however some tracks were grandfathered in (Baku and Monaco)

@@ghosty9051 removing the chicane would be too dangerous, they would arrive at tabac way to fast for the fia to allow that. They would arrive at close to 200 with no run off

If this was part of a rallycross joker lap, say you had to take the alternate longer version 5 times out of 70 something, that would make the race a lot more interesting

That could sure address the problem of being stuck behind someone, unable to pass them. Teams would have to watch the joker delta in order to not get stuck behind another car. Drivers could then use the clear space ahead to push for time and hopefuly jump their opponent when they take one of their jokers. It would honestly make it really complicated to call when to take a joker, another thing to think about apart from tyre strategies. But I guess that would make a Monaco win even more highly regarded than before. I see only 3 problems. F1, Monaco itself (F1 wants to change Monaco, but perhaps not with a joker lap, while Monaco doesn't want to change Monaco at all, either way, this is sort of a nice compromise between changing the track and keeping the original layout, as you're basically doing both), and safety. I'd say the joker entry is all wrong, since it would require hard breaking somewhere where people on the standard lap are going flat out. Perhaps if the track just continued straight on in the Casino corner, that would be better (there is actually a street there, if you look on the maps). Then it would join the joker lap shown here and rejoin the track at the same place. There would need to be a barrier so that cars can rejoin the track safely. Possibly not too much of a problem, since cars already swerve right to avoid that big bump on the left side of that straight. However, it would make the straight very narrow in that place, so cars battling on that straight can't go side by side, one has to give way, which could cause accidents (and in that case, red flags, since there would be absolutely no space to get through). It would also kill one of the better overtaking spots, into Mirabeau. The idea is great, but it has its flaws which sadly are hard or even impossible to fix, given the nature of the track. It's just too narrow and compacted and we have to rely on the very few streets and corners around the track, which are compatible with extending the current layout and which sadly cannot be modified in any way. This is about the only option for a joker lap that we have (the fact half the lap is ran by the water doesn't help). There is an option of placing it between the last and the first corner, but that would make timing awkward (and could be confusing if say a lapped backmarker is taking the joker when the leader is finishing the final lap). Either way, the extension just before the tunnel looks great (but obviously not as a joker, there's no way to rejoin safely).

To be honest, that extra part of sector 1 has a very wide section it could use, and become a brilliant ot area so cars can pass.

You can't use use this part in reality. During the Grand prix, the "normal" traffic has to go through the hills, since the seaside is locked, and with this variant you would lock also the hills. Besides, there have been some new constructions around, so it's not as wide as it seems, and the Casino square will still be much more photogenic

This is the most accurate Monaco map I've seen. When there's no f1 race this looks super identical to real Monaco having visited the place and seen it with my own eyes. Props to devs

Hello, Monaco guy here, as someone who lived here for 25 years i can say the portier layout rework is the only extension possible on track from a realistic point of view, but a good idea none the less i discussed that exact idea with friends at the last gp. Any other extension* would mean A LOT of issues in terms of logistic, and / or would cut essentials roads, plus it would cost a lot of money that im pretty sure the government don't wan't to spend on that for now.. The only drawback about the portier roundabout is that it would increase the top speed at the exit of the tunnel and i think it could be too dangerous, a shunt here with current speed is already scary lmao, one idea could be to fully remove the chicane and instead of only using the left lane before tabac, removing all the trees in the middle of the road and just use all the width of both lanes, could be a pretty nice passing opportunity conbined to the portier change, but you would have to widden and fully rework tabac or it will act as a funnel. That's the thing with Monaco any change you make could mean dead peoples in the cars of the grand stands and / or a lot of spending to do... So let's just choose the more logical option, leave Monaco alone, and stop making van sized F1, problem solved 😆

I would actually keep the original layout, but at Rascasse go left instead of right. Go along that harbor stretch and then into the cruise terminal tunnel (only that pole i the middle needs to be removed/modified (i.e. a metal structure on the outside with support bars), then accelerate out of the 2nd tunnel go behind the buildings of the new created track section, and re-enter the track at Antony Noghes. Creates PLENTY of extra space for more yachts that line up to view the race at GP weekend prices, and a very wide piece of track that could help overtaking.

Let’s have Monaco points count only for the drivers’ championship, not the manufacturers’. Have them compete in smaller, identical cars like an F3 car. Sit back and enjoy👍👍👍

Layout change or not, it's actually pretty crazy that those massive cars are still racing in Monaco. Like, most of the street there is super narrow no matter how you look at it

I would like the new Portier section because: 1 Making it easier to drive an alternative line and stay closer to the front car accelerating towards the tunnel (the guy in front has has to balance keeping the inside closed on the one hand and maintaining exit speed). The guy behind can choose a line to optimize exit speed compared to his opponent, unlike the current Portier corner where exit speed will be equal. This way the second car will be closer exiting the tunnel with more chances of out braking. 2 Slightly longer straight allowing the natural slip stream to have more time (marginal effect is suspect). 3 Slightly higher speed approaching the chicane, resulting in longer braking zones and more chance of an overtake. (again marginal effect I suspect). 4 A nice flowy chicane added to the lay-out. 5 Cheap and realistic layout change.

The part around Portier might be interesting, giving a bit more time to catch up and generate some overtakes around the harbour chicane. The rest...It just adds more pile-up-laptime.

Thank for that Mitsos I had the same idea last year after the Monaco GP. Diversion 1: I though of having that as a joker lap as making it a new layout does not facilitate overtaking. Although having joker laps could over complicate things more with yellow flags/VSC/SC and penalties for drivers that did not complete the required joker. Diversion 2: The loop at Portier would allow a better exit for following cars going into the tunnel. Remove Nouvelle chicane and continue down J.F.Kennedy Ave turning left at Rte de la Piscine. Tunnel exit is ~9.5m wide J.F.Kennedy Ave ~6.5m wide. The planter boxes with trees would need to be removed and road resurfaced on Quai des Etats-Unis to same elevation as J.F. Kennedy allowing a wider road. This would extend the straight from Nouvelle chicane by 195m However I don't see the above happening as safety would be the primary consideration in regards to any alteration at Monaco. EDIT: alternatively introduce a ultra soft tyre compound that last around 10-15 laps forcing addition pit stops but giving drivers a huge mechanical grip advantage over worn tyres. Or.....get rid of the Monaco GP :-)

This is almost exactly the same as what I was thinking a few weeks ago when I was on Google Maps, except I turned right before you did so that they had a longer run into Mirabeau and still passed the casino.

I also thought about this exact layout, especially the tunnel - i think it'd work since the bridge above bypasses those turns anyway for people needing to get around the city.

Where you rejoin the track after missing Casino wouldn't work. This is where the "bump" is in the real layout, which isn't accurately depicted here, and it exists because that part of the road is a fairly steep junction/intersection. What I would suggest is removing the chicane after the swimming pool by swapping the grandstand to the other side of the track and creating a straighter run down to Rascasse with a 90 degree turn rather than a hairpin, you also wouldn't have the leading car swapping from the right to the left back to the right as the racing line goes now. They would stay left out of the swimming pool all the way into the braking zone leaving a small opportunity for someone to be later on the brakes down the inside.

There isn’t an actual road there, but it is a large flat walkway since it’s right on the marina shore. So I think this would be an easy change to make.

This is exactly the layout I suggested on another KZbin channel about a year ago discussing possible improvements to Monaco. Exactly. Though I don’t think logistically it can be done. Plus I doubt the casino would be happy losing their iconic section

No, the fun of Monaco is spoiled as the roads are huge and there are lots of unnecessary turns, it feels like the track is never ending and not a lot of sharp turns..... Any how fabulous efforts put in.... Loved the video.....

Please send this to the FIA, this would actually be really good, the part where we go left earlier would bring an overtaking spot, even though it’s more follow there, you get a better run in the tunnel for an overtake. Defo really good, maybe make this into an actual track instead of the normal street stuff to see how it’d run in an actual race

As fun as exploring these alternate layout is, what people seem to forget is that monaco has been used in this layout, albeit with minor alterations in places, for 94 years. So at this point its there for historical prestige. Its a different story to the nurburgring and spa changes, they were more for safety being so long and so fast Also people never seem to consider that the size of the cars are the problem and its always the tracks fault. Formula e managed a great race there this year, yes the near-spec nature of the cars helps but also the cars being so much smaller than f1 helped even more.

If I were Fia i would approve it. Looks amazing and I agree with every people comments, longer straight, tunnel, more spaces to pass and fight, it would be awesome. Tho... F1 nowadays are massively long cars... So... We should cut and erase those corners where the F1s can't go "quite the speed". Although, also, i read recently about Fia wanting to make cars close fight like now but shorter from 2026.

I think the majority agrees that going around the roundabout before the tunnel and moving the first chicane back by 50 metres after the roundabout, will make it true overtaking spot. This in addition to a minimum of 2 pitstops will make Monaco interesting again. Otherwise I’m happy for it to be scrapped.

Exact same layout I suggested on Chain Bear about three years ago. But the problem is, it cuts out Casino Square, and they'd never agree to that.

The longer tunnel “straight” is a great idea, would be annoying fiddly corners before it but worth it to lengthen the straight. I think the biggest issue is the chicane, move it back towards Tabac and widen it so it can get 2 cars at a time. Might need to sacrifice a couple of those trees along there which is is a shame but there’s plenty of space to do it. The extended bit before Lowes is interesting but I don’t think it adds anything, the streets aren’t any wider than the existing track. I think straightening out the swimming pool section and turning Rascasse into a hairpin at the end of a straight would help, not sure how you would do it as the swimming pool and grandstands are in the way but Monaco love filling in the sea to create more land so this shouldn’t be an issue for them. This would essentially turn the track back to something similar to its original layout where it was left at Tabac then a straight to the hairpin, was possibly called gas meter hairpin?, roughly where Rascasse is today then another straight(ish) to Saint Devote. Coupled with my idea for moving the chicane to Tabac it would turn Tabac into an acceleration zone then flat out to Rascasse where you may be able to overtake. If anyone from Monaco wants to put me up in a hotel for a couple of weeks and supply a healthy casino budget then I am more than happy to come over and discuss my plan for saving the Monaco Grand Prix in more detail 😂.

I had a similar idea about the swimming pool section. If you remove the 2nd chicane then I believe you simply swap the grandstand to where the track is now and put the track where the grandstand is, this would create another overtaking opportunity into Rascasse, not sure much else can realistically be done without major works. The original layout (if I've read up on it properly) actually went to the right of what is now Tabac which is up a slight incline (now used in the short circuit layout) and then they turn left at the top running along what is now the pit lane (the pits were somewhere else back then). You would then turn right before reaching Rascasse, into the Gasworks hairpin, back onto the main straight.

Same as a layout I drew up a couple years ago but the problem with it are some of the additional sections are just too narrow and wouldn't end up adding anything worthwhile to the circuit other than making it longer

Since the lap times are 10/15 seconds faster than in the middle of the ninetees and will keep decreasing, this absolutely makes sense to me.

I'm all for whining about history - I do it often - and if too much about Monaco is changed I'd stop watching F1 entirely, but I gotta say... That's pretty good. Especially the new section between Mirabeau-bas and Poitier. The "Top hat" section that bypasses Massanet and the Casino is a fun little section that F1 wouldn't bother with, but it's like a hillier "sector 2" section of Long Beach - from when they leave Oceanside up to the back straight. Not a bad effort sir!

Add the fountain, yes, because drivers could stay closer and make a pass into the chicane. The rest of it, forget it. Try this instead: Coming out of Tabac and Piscine 1, make it a straight to the tight right hander at Rascasse.

Seeing that the run between the pool and Rascasse is actually a quay, could it be transformed into part of the track? Hear me out: - A tighter first pool chicane - A straight run from the exit of the first pool to the Rascasse crossing, probably wider. - Rascasse goes from a hairpin to a tight corner, not likely a 90 degrees corner but more a 110-degrees. That and the park deviation at Portier would be excellent for raising speeds and making a closer corner. Even it could help with the width of the pitlane going before Rascasse. Edited to add: I don't see the first part modification happening, as it would take the track apart from the Casino and the Hotel de Paris.

When I first saw Chain Bear's video on this my first thought was no. But having seen the video I do see the possibilities. Another possible idea would be doing these two diverging routes on alternate laps. So the first alternative route you do on the odd laps and the second do on even laps - inspired by the old Monza layout with the banking

Just a small note, this version of the track is slightly different compared to Chain bears. I think chain bear had a way better design, but unfortunately the mod didn’t have the streets he used so I had to look for another way to do it haha

I know it's Charles's home, But imagine if you took the redbull around there Redbull would actually do a stunt driving a layout like that on the public roads, off racing season

This is absolutely great !! You may have found an alternative to F1 there! I read this week that there is a proposal that, before Portier, instead of cars going to the right, they should go to the left. You even did that but came back earlier. They were supposed to go until Beach Plaza Monaco Hotel and then return back straight to the tunnel. And another change that I would do also at the exit of the tunnel straight for a few more 100, 200 meters and then take a left to a new corner of the Tabacaria. How about you make this Part 2 video with these suggestions, MITSOS? It would be also great 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I think nothing will be changed even if you elongated the circuit because the road and corner is still too narrow and in fact it will be just a longer monaco circuit with same problem all over again

Adding a longer run into the tunnel could create some more action but I don't think the alternative route between Casino and Mirabeau is going to achieve anything other than making the lap longer

I wish one of you sim racing guys would try my Monaco idea in a full race... I propose a 'Monaco Edition' aero package which I'm sure will promote close racing and overtakes even on the current layout; 1) take off the rear wing 2) take off the front wing 3) go racing!

Having a look at google maps, the section before the tunnel could be an overtaking opportunity itself as the road is actually quite wide there (if they were happy to tear up the roundabout), or an opportunity to add a few more grandstands - either way it'd bring the action closer to the new developments too - i don't think the residents there would complain at all about that.

The first sector is devastated. The modified Portier doesn't solve the problem: 50 metres of extra acceleration don't create an overtaking spot. Moving the Nouvelle Chicane 150-200 metres further would do it (in a position similar to the old Chicane until 1971).

The only changes it needs is either: - Remove it from the calendar; -Qualifying gives half the points of the race. They keep insisting Monaco is that special, so make it special. If it is not special, then why cant it be taken out of the calendar?

We need to get rid of that swimming pool if we want to return any chance of good overtakes. Reprofile for an earlier turn so there's enough run-off for the faster approach. I know it's a cool spot in quali, but the swimming pool is the worst during the race.

@@Mitsos1311 Got in mind the streets of Monaco in the sections that contain the circuit were flattened over the years. In fact the section between Casino and Mirabeau got a big bump that the drivers always avoid (that's why they never drive straight there). Tabac had a big and annoying bump too
