No. To stop him, you need to understand his game, especially in front of goal. You can't stop his game when he's wide in midfield, but as he gets towards opponent's goal post, it's pretty easy to stop him. However you have to be on your game because he persists, so you must be willing to go at it for 90+ minutes or however long the game lasts.

Just that it requires an extensive gameplan covering most probabilities, great discipline to keep at it for 90mins, high intelligence to read tactical shifts, and the right players who you need to either have scouted correctly or needed to spend a little bit for their signatures..and maybe some risky rough plays that are just enough not to earn red cards. That's only for Messi, nevermind his other mostly world class teammates. He has also consistently done his thing for more than a decade!

See, the difference between Messi and Ronaldo is that Ronaldo is an incredible goal scorer. You give him the ball inside the box he will score, one on one with the keeper he will score. He will make incredibly athletic goals, high up in the air, 4 feet off the ground, bicycle kick and he will do it. But Messi is more than that. He scores goals, he dribbles, he assists. Put him in a situation where he has to beat 5 defenders, he will manage to get the ball past all of them somehow. When he plays, there is this fire in him, like a madness, like for the time he is on the pitch, he can think of nothing but football and he can do nothing but play. Ronaldo is a goal-scoring machine but that is where his impact ends. Messi is such a complete player, if he doesn't score, he will still affect the game in so many ways.

In that league (as well as often in the CL) he is given so much protection to the point where opposition players cannot even breathe on him without him being given a free kick or penalty. When he hasn't had all those things (other than still having a fair few other very good players around him), he's failed i.e. when he's lined up for Argentina when it has really mattered.I If I had to clone a player to make up a team of outfield players, I for one would certainly not choose Messi.

If Messi plays in a bad team, all his passing lanes will be blocked which means he wouldn't get the ball in the final third. If he gets the ball in opposition half he would be pressed immediately so he doesn't gets the time to turn and release a pass or start a dribble. Exactly what happens to Messi with Argentina. I can't believe people hold not winning a WC against Messi. In 2014 after Neymar got injured Messi was the best player. In 2010 despite not scoring he was terrific. In 2018 Argentina lost in the semi finals. He's performed. This current side is top heavy but has average midfielders and average defenders.

I love Messi great player but to me Diego is better and he is the GOAT. I have two reasons for that first his skills and technic are amazing and by far better than Leo and second Diego did something that nobody never done it in football: winning a World Cup almost by himself! You might say that was a 7 games tournament, but he did it again with Napoli. Messi had and continue to have all these big names and talented players playing with him, Diego didn't have that luxury. Say what you want but Messi's career and relevance outside domestic league La Liga ended circa 2015 after Ronaldinho, Xavi and Iniesta left. Messi as a player got completed exposed: a system player who can only perform against certain opponents, in certain circumstances, at the right temperature. Since then it has been humiliation after humiliation. 4-0 defeat against Liverpool B team, 3-0 defeat against Roma just to mention the last few. And Messi wanted the CL. Words can not describe how much he wanted the, in Messi's own words, "copa tan linda" that had to watch , powerless, Real Madrid win 4 in 5 years, 3 in a row (never to e repeated again, by any team, in 100 years). The thing is: you actually have to be great enough and talented enough to win the CL. And Messi doesn't have that type of talent. It's not something, some prize, people can give you. You have to show the talent. And It's been proven time and time again that Messi can't perform at that high rarefied level.. There are only 2 players who have proven they can do that. Cristiano Ronaldo and Maradona. Then hot air. Then more hot air. Then the rest. So enjoy your long, long (basically since 2015), very long goodbye to the great Barcelona idol that is Messi. But please spare the rest of us who have a critical thought and who can see through the enormous amount of bs. I have no issue with Messi being the GOAT for most people...but as a Madrid fan Ronaldo has broken many records and won many cups WHILE Messi was playing so that alone shows how determined he is. He went his first 40 games for Man U without a goal in UCL and now is the all time leading scorer...has the record for most goals in one UCL campaign (15) he also has the record for most goals in the group stage and is the only player with 5 UCL trophies. He is also Portugal's all time leading scorer and started as a winger. Oh...and he helped them to a Euro 2016 trophy.
