ARM-based hardware will run properly on ARM-supported software, and same goes for x86. It requires translations to run x86 software on ARM hardware. Imagine playing Cyberpunk 2077 on your Samsung phone. x86 and ARM are different instruction sets that are built for different kinds of hardware, and ARM is more suited for efficiency rather than power.

I recognized that "phasing in" visual effect the moment you said it--that wasn't prism, that's the auto SR feature of the laptop kicking in, and... not working great. I've had it pop in on a couple of games I've played--and how I've fixed it is by changing the rendering resolution of the game, and then changing it back. That usually gets rid of the errors for me. I bet turning on FSR did something similar.

It's an interesting move in technology progression, sure, but there is still a huge elephant in the room: compatibility with old hardware. On both a professional and gamer level, there is a LOT of stuff that simply won't work through prism, such as audio/daw equipment, midi interfaces and controllers, external dongles for security on POS terminals etc, and of course things like eGPUs will have no drivers either. This is a large enough shift that it will require all those industries to catch up before it can be reasonable to consider this a takeover/change, rather than just an alternative option for people who only need a simple PC.

The 40ish FPS in GTA V is 10fps better than my Phenom II X4 / HD5750 1GB GDDR5 managed in 2015 (even tho that was much smoother). @frequentfrenzied
@frequentfrenzied 3 ай бұрын
Everything being soldered is more of an ultrabook thing than an Arm thing. All of the x86-64 based machines are doing the exact same thing. They are focused on making everything as thin as possible, so daughter boards and the easy upgradeability that they bring are out. The good thing is that hardware requirements are not rising anywhere near as fast as they used to be for the type of workloads that machines like this are built to handle, so you don't really need to upgrade the computer during the typical life-span anymore as long as it was reasonably spec'd to begin with. Still, if you are worried about that, then hopefully Framework will release a compute module with an ARM processor on it as they always make their computers as upgradeable as possible.

Probably just me, but in recent years the development in laptop cpu´s and gpu´s was so great that you nowadays have to look very closely to find an actual good low power laptop for a decent price. One that offers you enough for basic daily tasks, youtube etc but focuses on battery time. The market seems flooded with ryzen 5/7 laptops (or intel equivalents) that include often a dedicated gpu (rtx 3050/4050 etc). Not saying those offers are bad, but when it comes to only running daily tasks, youtube videos, browsing a ryzen 3 with lowest integrated gpu would do. (or any equivalent of an extreme low power apu). And when they come around with something that fits that... they go nuts with aluminium, expensive this, expensive that and turn it into a luxury piece or artwork that then costs at leasts as much as your average mid range performance laptop. Sure you can go cheap and buy used but those usually just do have the same battery runtime then actual laptops with just worse performance.

I haven't used the new Copilot Plus version of windows 11 but I believe they have a AI up-sample running in the windows settings by default and that might be what is causing that weird effect in Cyberpunk. Don't take just my word for it as I can't remember were in the settings it is located.

i think ifixit gave it a great rating due to the insane ease of repair, with how simple that case is genuinely an okay laptop (if you ignore the arm processor)

It's funny. In 2019 I was still using a laptop that ran GTA V, like this computer ran Cyberpunk with FidelityFX... but at 480p (actually it was 450p and it ran at an average of 17fps). I would have killed to have as good performance in GTA as you back then. Nowadays I've got a 3070.

translation layers not always slow or bad. steam uses with proton a type of the wine windows translation layer. wine for example does convert some commands but mostly it acts like the windows kernal and filesystem. with mac this is a similar situation, also there are ton of android translation layer out there to. who uses mostly arm commands which needs to translate. and non of them are bad. the only thing thats often make problems are cpu specific commands, like older games and software uses but no longer pressed in our modern cpus because it is no longer necessary. gpu are also a thing. we have 3 types of gpu commands sets(openGL, Vulkan, DicrecX) openGL is farly basic and you need to do everthing by your self of you using it for a game, Vulkan and DirectX are similar but Vulkan is more strict but untethered from the kernal and could use also everypart of the GPU like DirectX, DirectX is bound to the kernal so therefore it is mostly used on windows machines. also DirectX is a big mess of additional software and subversion and microcodes. Raytracing and such things are also usable with openGL and Vulkan but drivers are the issue. no one is willing do bring those features easy usable like DirectX to those command and if sone one is doing it unofficial they get sued. I do game development i writing game engines and i hate the mess that DirectX brings. we have dx12 yes but every feature is managed and called with the driver and only with the driver. vulkan and openGL on the other hand all of your commands go directlly to the GPU without intervention from the driver. the problem here is i cant interact with the raytracing cores or the tensor cores build in the GPU so i am foreced to call the driver with DirectX commands. also otherproblem are Linux drivers. amd and intel are cool there are no problems besides raytracing is at the moment only callable in image render mode and not in realtime render mode. NVIDIA sucks with drivers, drivers poorly maintained and mostly broken and outdated. the actual 4000 drivers are mostly 1600 drivers with broken commands who leads in the empty space or returns garbage. raytracing and tensors are uncallable at the moment. now to the driver gui of NVIDIA why is this thing from 2006 and has no features of the actual cards in it? and why gets this outdated garbage shipped with the actual drivers on linux? i dont get it. in the end if you run linux use intel or amd gpus they work but if you use Windows yea go with NVIDIA it is at the moment the best performance even NVIDIA sucks with that their features are only callable over the driver additional software.

Huh, in the Cyberpunk footage I think what's going on is that for some reason the TAA isn't working properly. So all of the effects that depend on it to look properly okay are just looking weird and fuzzy.

Usb-c need to communicate to other device to know which one is the host and device, I believe that's why your external ssd didn't work. The functionality is either not there yet or not even implemented on hardware, or that usbc is only used for charging.

Im still bitter about laptops not having easily removable batteries, socketed CPUs, and tons of different I/O ports like 90s and early 00s laptops had. I do like the magnets and only needing 4 screws to access the internals, but, overall this just seems like an overpriced appliance, kinda like an apple product.

The intermittent frametimes are a problem I've encountered running the microsoft GL compatibility layer. I think it's just because it IS a layer of abstraction, and it has to handle unified memory on top of that abstraction.

What kinda of external display with an adapter/dongle did you have on Mac Silicon? I’m very curious, I’ve had many adapters/dongles from PCs I had that just worked on the silicon mac without any additional installation. Even connecting a USB-A adapter to hdmi all worked fine, though that did require software installation.
