Notes about this video: 1. I use a 240 litres wheelie bin - I am 5'6", 62kg. It's ok. It would be nice to go bigger. 2. 2 years on I am still doing them. 3. Getting in and out is tricky but I have found a way. I just have to swing my leg in and out - I am quite flexible though and realise some people may find it tricky. 4. I use plain water - not salt or chemicals. I change the water every 4-6 weeks. I should do it more but I don't like doing it. It doesn't get particularly dirty but I know when to change it because it goes murky. 5. THE NEIGHBOUR'S CAT NOW LIVES WITH US 🐈⬛ 💖 😭 - www.youtube.com/@charlie_cat 5. Something I may get asked about: Ice baths vs cold showers. For some reason, I find ice baths easier than cold showers. My friend Fraser (in the video on the video call) also says the same. Getting in the ice bath is done in one go. The hard part is getting in but once that's done it's fairly easy. My shower time is my relaxation time, giving me time to think ahead of my day. I find the cold water hitting different parts of my body awful. The whole experience for me is rather miserable so I'd prefer a 5 minute cold dunk. Saying that I would like to do a cold shower challenge. I started one earlier this year and failed miserably, so hoping that the activation in brown fat will help make cold showers easier next time.

Starting with a warm shower then turning to cold and breathing to activate the parasympathetic nervous system response helps. At some point in doing them repeatedly over time, the cold shower suddenly becomes pleasant during the shower rather than only afterwards, and the only limitation is the waste of water. 😁😂

I don’t have a bin, but I do use cold showers and baths regularly. I found wim on KZbin and was inspired to try. After all, it’s free. I’m a self employed carpenter in New England. It can get both cold and hot here. Cold showers help with both, dramatically. I have some cold weather gear that I don’t think I’ll need till I see sub zero (f) temps. I have been dealing wit psoriasis for about four years, the cold water and breath work helps with the psoriasis by shutting the itching and burning off for a few hours so I can sleep. Reliably. Love your curiosity, discipline and honesty.

I live in a part of the world where in winter, it can get very cold, and the days very short. My version of the ice bath/cold shower is to just go outside without a coat on, especially after exercise, and first thing in the morning when I get up. It feels amazing! I'm sure I'm losing out on some of the benefits of having cold liquid on my muscles in a bath, but since the bath isn't an option, this is what works for me. 😊 Of course there ARE limits--if it's -40 and my skin will freeze if I'm out too long, I limit my time.
@anonymoususer1231 Жыл бұрын
The thing is you need to have a temperature because below 50 Fahrenheit is where the true benefits come in. When doing it this way you’re not even sure how cold the water actually is. It’s really easy to make a cold bath using a freezer and a thermometer that you plug it into it keeps a bath at a steady temperature. And it’s also only $500 versus $6000 for a real cold bath.

Thanks Laura, I started off with 30 seconds in cold shower and built up to 10 minutes in that 100 day period. It was very challenging but definately worth the effort. Started incorporating breathwork soon after and am approaching 100 days of that also. Had 3 ice baths so far but found it difficult to get the temperature below 9c due to the current warm weather and would need a huge amount of ice to reduce it further. So alternating between ice baths, cold showers and the good old North Sea.

@@LauraTryUK Yes, there is, but its the brain that’s responding to the stress. When you are suddenly go into a cold water environment, you release similar hormones and chemical response as stress. The more the brain is exposed to this stress, the less stress response it produced, the less cold you feel. This is used to treat anxiety, and other stress causing mental illness. I think Portsmouth University has a department that’s researching it. Think about it for a bit, normal white fat cells, muscle cells, heart cells do not multiply, it just gets larger or better at what it does. I admit I don’t know enough about brown fat cells, but its highly unlikely it will begin to multiply, unless it becomes cancerous.

Hey Ione, great work on taking your first step towards cold therapy. I did have experience with cold water many years previous - doing obstacle races in the winter, wading through water, but that was many years before and I think my brain and body forgot how to handle it. I don't like cold showers - see the pinned comment of this video. Perhaps just do legs for a few days, then go to chest for one minute and build up from there - no rush. And if you can have someone with you the first few times even better, just to monitor and provide support. Keep me posted please! and FYI: it never really gets easier (I'n 2 years in) but the feeling after is what keeps me doing them. Unlike anything else 🌟

@@LauraTryUK It is truly unbelievable! I was able to stay in for 4 min yesterday. I bought a freezer, so it is very lazy dip - no cleaning required (for now) or buying ice. Still watching this video every day :). Thank you for fantastic video!

To be honest I really don’t know what’s all the fuss about jumping into a bath packed with Ice and water been doing it for years 10 minutes a session never felt any discomfort at all main thing is control your breathing and focus your mind your body will do the rest in fact I would even go as far to say I can’t wait to get into a cold bath filled up with ice

I have GOT to try this. We've got a spare blue bin because we have a rental aprtment (but it's empty at th emoment) so ... i've got to try this. I am used to -30C in winter, but not as a bath LOL 🧊 Makes me think of the people doing it in winter in frozen lakes in Russia or Scandinavia.

Again, a lesson in mental toughness. You take on the toughest of challenges and do them all with such positivity and feelgood factors. This was not an easy task. The pain is very intense, especially in the first plunge. 9 mins is remarkable. Well done Laura , you make a difference.

A great suggestion! Activation of brown fat I hear as well. I just did a supermarket shop with just a t-shirt in the freezer aisle... does that count? 😉

Loved the video! I have had the same experience you mentioned in your pinned comment as I find cold showers more difficult mentally than ice baths. Both get better after a few minutes but with the baths I assume the water directly around the skin heats up slightly so if you don't move much it doesn't feel as cold? So cool that you got to speak to Scott Carney! Really liked that part of the video. The bit at the end where you couldn't fit was great! haha

Cold showers are just awful aren't they? 🤪 So cool that you were in the video too!! 😍 That event was so good, wasn't it?

Don't do this if you are a man over 50 unless you are doing it at the hospital. Over 50 should start at 70F -21C and work your way down each day.
