Urushi is made from the sap of a tree which contains urushiol. Urushiol is a potent allergen to most humans and is what makes poison ivy cause such severe reactions. It's pretty nasty stuff, however when it is exposed to air it polymerizes and is rendered totally safe, making it ideal for food grade lacquer.

I enjoyed this video so very much! I have always wanted to know how this process is done, and to try it for myself - and you detailed your beautiful efforts so well! I am sitting and knitting a cabled cardigan while I’m watching; it is a chilly and gray Sunday in Cape Cod, Massachusetts (a place infinitely nicer in the summer than in winter). Many thanks for another lovely video❤

Really enjoyed that, in spite of my dread that a puff of wind or an excited dog could blow away that powdered gold in an instant. I also enjoyed imagining a factory somewhere where they put the kits together. The most important job: the bowl and plate breaker. Too many pieces means more glue and more gold or a wasted bowl or plate. The Chief Breaker is probably a graduate of decades of apprenticeship. Finally, I really liked the meta quality of you finding beauty in whatever flaws you may have made in your repair work…which is in itself intended to make flawed things beautiful. Oh and I still love your dog 😄

Hello, I love your channel and the way of living in Japan, I love how your pieces came out. I always have done hand sewing and I'm giving sashiko a try this year, so far is not perfect but I mend my apron to use it a little longer. Thanks for showing us some of your life 🤗

Kintsugi is a very delicate and time-consuming art, and one that brings peace of mind. I think your Kintsugi works are very beautiful. There are very few kintsugi craftsmen in Japan. Have fun, keep improving your skills, and spread the charm of Kintsugi.

What a great project! I have a friend who uses gold leaf for pop art and I love the glow gold has. This application really levels up already beautiful pottery to represent beauty in the brokenness. Trust in the process is key. The wind you had reminds me of last week here in newengland. Much love to your family.

I took up embroidery this year. But more like line sketching with fabric. I have embroidered a Patti Smith album cover, a modern building, some Japanese fir trees, and reproduced a Ladovsky drawing. Its awesome on long plane and train rides, too.

Hi from central Otago southern New Zealand 👋😃 great results with the kintsugi 😁 very interesting and enjoyable to watch, the inclusion of the Japanese TV programs was cool. My pet projects this summer are: finish making the kitchen into the new lounge complete with a tokonoma alcove ( ive been watching a lot of japanese carpenters this year on KZbin to work out the tricky bits) and turn my bedroom into the new kitchen and my old lounge into my bedroom 😂 ive been helping the neighbors with thier remodeling and now ive decided to do mine 😅 very excited for the transformation 👋😁

How goes the akiya hunt for you and Jesse? I'll be back in July looking too. I was able to score some free lumber: pine and redwood. My current project is making a bed frame using shiro and nakashima joints. I'll have to buy some wood, but overall cost is fairly low since most of it was free. Thanks for introducing me to kintsugi.
