Honestly, you did everything correctly. You tired, you failed, you learning, you succeeded, and then repeated the whole process. Welcome to being a mini painter! They worse thing you can do now is stop. As an art teacher, my piece of advice now is don’t afraid to highlight more. Keep up the amazing work my friend!

Another thing I learned from personal experience... Avoid capes -- or anything with significant overlap. Painting the underside of something obscured by something else was easily the most frustrating thing I encountered with all of the minis I painted. I also bought dozens of empty, plastic film canisters and putty to attach the minis to the canisters to avoid having to touch the minis while painting them. And I did mass priming (and eventually varnishing) by attaching the minis to strips of foam cardboard with the putty, and spraying as many as 5 or 6 minis on a single strip, multiple strips at a time. It's necessary to mass prime if you are going to assembly-line paint them all the same colors at the same time. It's a very practical, time-saving method I discovered early on in the process.

Speed paint is magical. But you need to use white primer or at least spray white over your black primed mini to create contrast

I used to paint warhammer. (By no means an expert) The biggest game changers with the painting for me were the shade paint that you already have and dry brushing. Citadel paints (Im sure others have it too) has dry paints for it and its a great way to add highlights quickly onto a piece. I found it looks especially nice on metal.

Speed paint 2.0 was a game changer for me. I painted imperial assault years ago and then stopped. The results weren't bad, was following a great YT channel along the way, but i was using craft level paint, not mini paints, so it wasn't excellent, and it took bloody hours to get the layers and shades right. I decided to just blow the cash after i heard about the newest speed paints and, damn, so easy. A full set of plaid hat games painted in a matter of 4 weekends (versus nearly half a year worth of weekends for imperial assault). Decent enough effects to get it table ready. A touch of "traditional" mini painting techniques to elevate it slightly, just mainly by understanding how colours layered on each other and thinking about which goes on first.

I first attempted to paint minis in May 2022, wanting to paint my entire "Star Wars: Imperial Assault" collection (for which I have everything). Like you, I tested it on a few, odd (non-related) minis which were expendable. Fortunately, I have a friend who has been painting minis for years, from whom I solicited advice, and that helped a lot. (I also selectively watched a few videos.) Firstly, I wouldn't recommend priming indoors. That stuff is bad. If weather doesn't permit doing it outdoors (and in Latvia it probably doesn't most months of the year), do it in a well ventilated area. (I also wear gloves, eye goggles and a mask. Did I mention that stuff is bad?) Secondly, (and nothing I've done would have worked without this), I bought one of those bendy table lamps similar to the one you have, which also has a magnifier, but I've never needed to use the magnifier (by the grace of God). But having a bright light close to the subject matter is indispensable to me. And as it's on a bendy stem, it can be adjusted to different angles. I found one on Amazon for less than $50 US and it has worked great. Thirdly, if painting significant numbers of minis, do it assembly line. This greatly saves with time. Paint all your black at once on as many minis you want to have black. Then paint all your green, or whatever. For instance, when doing Stormtroopers, I painted all of the black lining between the white armor first on all couple dozen of them. Then the white, etc. And you can always go back for touch-up if you mess up (which I do frequently). I also spray varnish on them outdoors, as that's bad, too (like the primer). Surprisingly, my minis turned out to my satisfaction, and I finished 200 in about two weeks. Last year, around this time, I painted another 100 (or so) of some other minis I have, and I'm pleased with the results.

This is great timing! I have started painting miniatures a while ago but I am really struggling to take them to another level. This helped me decide that I need to invest in a bigger variation of colours and I need to do a lot more research. Thanks for taking us along for the ride, I will definitely check the discord for some more tips!

What a savage starting with Oathsworn minis. You made great progress and you don’t have to stick with just speed paint or regular paint. Using contrast paints and dry brushing make a big difference. Also it’s ok to not do eyes on minis. Maybe start with easier minis to build your skills then when there’s one you like go all out on it. Great work though.

Speedpaints followed by shades and drybrushing is a good way to get great results quickly. I don't do Zenithal highlights unless I really love the mini. Getting the rest decent enough for the table is sufficient imo. I rarely use regular acrylic paint here. I painted all of OG nemesis with expansions this way snd they turned out great.

I... Also started painting my minis a month ago (and it was also my second attempt... and I also had the exact same kit as you). Congrats on the improvements, looks great ! I'd suggest looking into doing "dry brushing" for adding highlight, that took my minis to the next level without much more work. And I'm definitely interested in the speed painting video, as I've only used "normal" paints so far.

Thanks for the suggestion! Tried dry brushing at the start, but it left a very floury or dusty look. Started highlighting with the white primer on black and liked the results much better.

use speedpaint for very textured parts then highlight after its dry and normal paint for flat and for me this is the way for fast but amazing looking models also dry brush bases. also use a matt varnish so the speedpaint isnt so shiny and it will look more like normal paint.

I think that it's great progress :) I think the biggest difference when I started to notice my improvements is when I started painting specific minis I really wanted to paint and started to use contrast and experiment with colors :) but for board games speed paints all day long

I'm going to sound silly for this, but I'm a dental student. For dental school (and the future) we use loupes. Well, my loupes sometimes come back home for painting 😂. I personally hate painting but we get the models done.

Hey Janis! I went on a similar journey recently. I think there's no shame in using speedpaints, I'm getting great results with them with half the hassle and headache. For that one you "screwed up", you can fix it. It happened to me and I was able to remove the paint by soaking the mini in alcohol for a while. Then I think I used a toothbrush or a sponge to brush off the remaining paint. Afterwards I just re-primed it and started over having learned what not to do.

Great video! I am only using the same Speedpaints you showed and I stucked there because of a good reason: The result to use regular paints might be better. But the effort in terms of colors and especially time is so much bigger imo so that it isn’t worth it for me. I spend around 80hours for all Blood Rage miniatures and that’s already too much time 😅 So might I ask if you would stick to regular paints instead of speedpaints or do you agree with the additional effort when it comes to 20+ miniatures in a game. Even for Wonderlands War it would be just too long 😢
