I am one of those strange people who role-play in EU 4, ck3 and other games, play for narrative purposes and go for some specific idea or because of some emergent gameplay or event that I found interesting, instead of just "map painting" in meaningless conquests for the sake of it. I almost never "min-max" or evaluate what is the most efficient way of manipulating the game-play mechanics.. My last CK3 playthrough was with the goal of creating a reformed Norse Asatru religion with Islamic syncretism. while forming a ultra martial hybrid culture of Norse-Greek-Welsh. And eventually carving out an Empire from the Christians in Britain, France and Northern Iberia. Another goal was simple to spread my dynasty through marriages as far and wide as possible while also constantly keeping up the "courtier breeding program" - where famous Christian dynasty members captured in raids are force recruited, converted and married for strange traits; albinism, dwarfism etc, and used as trophy court jesters displaying my prestige to the world

To be fair playing tall can be like more like taking you home trade node like + 1 more. ish. Technically speaking a GB game where you conquer the English channel and then just colonise is kinda playing tall. So long as you don't own much more than a whole subcontinent region it's counts as playing tall (apart from like, Persia, I'd say owning Persia and nothing else could be tall) Hormuz actually seems quite fun to play tall, may give it a go been wanting a tall campaign myself. Conquer South Persia and Arabia then dev up to be able to stand toe-to-toe with Ottos and Mamlukes.

Some conquest is occasionally needed before you play tall, look at Italy or Japan for example; prime territory for tall-playing, but you need to take a good thirty or forty provinces first.

Imperium Universalis is a great mod for playing really tall, expanding faster will trigger a disaster, vassals are must have and most nations snd states have lvl 3 forts, after annexing lands, inflation will skyrocket

I decided to play tall as Korea not too long ago. I promised myself I would conquer only to Goguryeo's old borders and just colonize a bit. Occasionally, beat up China for a nice payday. A nice chill game. So anyway, I conquered half of Italy and learned just how beneficial trade companies are after 5k hours.

Uniting your culture is definitely playing tall. Also uniting trade node where you collect usually would be considered playing tall (unless you are conquering land it would hard to keep in real life). Also by conquering all of Basra trade node you can basically change Hormuz trade node into end node. So if I would conquer all of Arabia, and all of Basra and Hormuz trade node I would still consider it playing tall. I would even grab Palestine and Transjordan for additional monuments.

Doing Three Mountains on 1.35 seems likes its a nightmare. By the time you get to Europe, either the Ottomans, Austria, Spain or France are just too big to handle in a respectable time frame. Along with the inherient gov cap issues that cripples your nation worse than being the Roman Empire, circa 300 AD, just doesn't seem like there's any value in actually doing it.

tbh my playing tall is a bit unoptimised: so basically, you see any building that you can build that isnt a castle? build it, see the expand infrastructure button? click it, get 1 or more stab for dem prosperity, encourage dev go BRRRRRRRR clicc dem dev button a lot and bam watch greer number go up and army trad go down so low you get stackwiped with 50k men by 1k men

Tall means your game consists mostly of clicking dev buttons. E.g. for every 10 clicks, 6 need to improve the tax base, production or manpower in ALREADY held provinces. Orherwise U eu4 noob ;)
