The MOST DIFFICULT words in Polish? I tried pronouncing them... Watch to find out more...
How does a Scot sound in Polish? How difficult is the Polish language for foreigners? Watch me make a fool of myself in today's video. I attempt to speak in one of the world's most difficult languages and after a little research and opinions from various sources including a couple of pages linked below, I came up with a list of ten of the most difficult to pronounce words in the Polish language. Please be gentle with me although I do appreciate your feedback and I would be grateful if you could let me know how I did in the comments below. Thanks for watching as usual and stick around to the end where I try to read a short passage including some of the words! Connect with me on Facebook and Instagram which are also linked below. Stay safe!

A tu Maciek szedł tymczasem. Jak nie wrzaśnie: „Cóż to znaczy? Czemu to się wół próżniaczy?!” „Jak to? Czyż ja nic nie robię? Przecież właśnie brzęczę sobie!” „Ja ci tu pobrzęczę, wole, Dosyć tego! Jazda w pole!” I dał taką mu robotę, Że się wół oblewał potem. Po robocie pobiegł w gąszcze. „Już ja to na chrząszczu pomszczę!” Lecz nie zastał chrząszcza w trzcinie, Bo chrząszcz właśnie brzęczał w Pszczynie.

As a native, born and raised in Poland I have to say that your pronunciation is on spot! You have very little accent (propably because you're scottish) and that helps a lot. All of them were great if not perfect! "Szczebrzeszyn" was perfect, Grzegorz as well. The "ę" in Brzęczyszczykiewicz is different than normal "e". It sounds deeper. I'm not sure how to explain that sound. The closest comparison is to french, propably, but I don't remember any words that would end with that. But you could look up the original scene. I know there are many videos of it on KZbin. Plus the "n" in "bezwzględny" is necessary and you lost it in pronunciation. But generally I'm impressed & I wish you good luck with the rest of the language!

Even when speaking English, your 'r' is very noticeable and it's a good thing when it comes to polish because it's very 'out there' in our language and most people really struggle with it. Also the way you said 'chrząszcz'... My friend, you nailed it!

This is really good. The most prominent imperfection was the pronunciation of your sibilant fricatives (the sounds s, ś, sz as well as their voiced variants). It's typical for English speakers as well as those of many other languages. It's difficult, because Polish is one of few European languages that have 3 basic sibilant variants (with differing places of articulation). English has only s and sh, for example. Now the English "sh" sounds neither like Polish "ś" nor "sz". So typically English natives pronounce both of them the same. Some Polish learners say they can't even hear the difference between those two. Which is inconceivable to me, but w/e. To me, those consonants easily give away your non-nativeness. Other than that, almost perfect. Impressive! I know that some of those clusters look ridiculous to foreigners. Some of those comes mostly from spelling ("szcz" would be spelled "šč" in Czech), but some is genuinely because of a cluster of many different consonants. I guess for us it can be easier, since the words can sometimes be deconstructed into their constituent parts. For example, "bezwzględny" comes from "bez" (without) and "względny" (relative - 4 consonants at the start). Now "względny" is an adjective that comes from "wzgląd" (consideration, view). Which in turn is a combination of the prefix "wz-" (meaning upwards, like in "wschodzić" or emphasizing the beginning, like in "wzbudzić") and "gląd", which isn't a word, but "glądać" with prefixes creates verbs that have something to do with looking, such as oglądać, zaglądać, podglądać etc. So you see that the combination of an ending -z, the prefix "wz" and a starging gl- creates a cluster of 5 consonants. Maybe that consideration makes it more pronounceable for Poles. "Źdźbło" is another interesting case. Apparently it comes from Proto-Slavic "stьblò" where "ь" is a vowel called "soft yer", which was pronounced like a short, weak "i" vowel. There's also a "hard yer" spelled "ъ", which on the other hand was pronounced more like "u". Yers evolved into different vowels in different Slavic languages, often disappearing depending on various rules. In Russian, "ь" evolved into "ye" (or "e" that softens the preceding consonant) "stьblò" evolved into "стебло", which can be transcribed as "styeblo". In Serbian, it evolved into "a", so the word is "stáblo".In Czech it's just a normal "e", hence "steblo". However in Polish, for some reason, the yer disappeared, so the word was "śćbło" in Old Polish (the yer softened the first two consonants). The "ść" got voiced by assimilation, which gets us "źdźbło". I don't know why the first Poles decided to drop the yer, but if they didn't, the word would be "śćiebło". Much easier to pronounce, I think. I hope this helped you understand our language a bit. Personally, I find "going back to the roots" to be very interesting and sometimes enlightening.

Brilliant, mate, and very entertaining. With regards to differentiating "hard" and "soft" 'SH' sounds, at 1:26 you nailed it. You pronounced "szczęście " twice, version 1 started too soft, but immediately after, the second version, where you dragged the start of the word, was bob on. "Szczęście" is also a great practice word, because it is a commonly used word, and has both the "hard" AND "soft" "SH" and "CH" sounds, so helps you get used to wrapping your teeth and tongue around the two different "SH" sounds in one word. The hard CZ, SZ and RZ sounds I reckon are the hardest thing for non-Poles to master. But then I once spent 15 minutes in a taxi in Milngavie and barely understood a word the driver said.

"Żółć" almost nailed it, you pronounced "Ł" like "L"...The "Ł" is like "W" in "weather". "Szczęście" good enough, ther is NO WAY an english speaker would say it perfectly. "SZCZĘ" part is something we spend our young years to learn when we learn how to speak so we got our mouth and tounge play just right to get the sound. "Pszczyna" the "sz" is little to hmmm quiet? but overall great job! "Następstw" nailed it! "Źdźbło" First "Ź" you said more like "Ż"...but before you called it disgusting you nailed it ;) "Bezwzględny" you've lost "N" at the end ;) "Chrząszcz" yep, always on those lists XD nailed it "Trzcina" yep, this too XD also good "Szczebrzeszyn"? You sick fuck XD you did as good as you native english allows you ;) "Brzęczyszczykiewicz" are you mental? XD XD XD You said "Ę" as "E" but, as above... but I see how you avoided next "Chrząszczyrzewoszczyce" XD Thank you, I had a good laugh but also I am impressed, well done.

Try to play a little bit with the articulation - work out which sounds are frontal, and whether the movement is different to the English ones. Speaking Polish and English for me is completely different, so I think discovering the difference between particular sounds for yourself is worth trying :) Even the simplest sounds such as /s/ are different for both of those languages. Having said that, I enjoyed the video very much, keep up the good work pal! :)

Wow, your pronunciation is amazing! You're unbelievably good! Just a few minor mistakes ;) In "trzcina" there is a longer, wider /i:/ in the middle, not a short vowel as in "tin". But those consonant clusters! I am truly impressed :)

@@truebro77 don't get me wrong - this is really no big deal. I just wanted to help you to be absolutely flawless. Most English speakers are unable to grasp the difference between "cz" and "ć", for them the words "wahać (się)" (to hesitate) and "wahacz" (car part, A-arm) sound identical. I have no idea how you've overcome this difficulty, your "linguistic ear" must be perfect :)

As a Polish person I'd like to say quite good pronounciation. Quite fun is that three of the words used are in one of most common polish tounge-twisters :"W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie"(In Szczebrzeszyn a beetle sounds in reeds) The movie you speak of is actually a 3 part series called "Jak rozpętałem 2 wojnę światową" (How I caused world war 2) and the scene itself is a joke because the main charakters' name is Franek Dolas, but he gives germans false name just to make fun of them.

Well done Colin. Good effort. 👍👍 Brzęczyszczykiewicz, you did very good, the only thing, pronounced "ę" more like just "e". And in Bezwzględny, several times it sounded like you were missing "n" at the end. Apart of that, all brilliant mate. Aye! 😉
