For someone who wishes they could play finger style acoustic guitar but doesn’t want the headache of 6 strings and the baritone seems like the perfect sweet spot for me to learn a guitar like instrument

I'm a fingerstyle guitarist. I love my guitar, but I will say there can be some advantages to having 4 strings. The top 4 strings are right in the sweet spot for melodies, so it kind of forces you to focus on that. It gives you more room on the fretboard and you can do a lot of open chords and moveable open chord shapes without having to worry about bottom strings getting in the way. In fact that's sort of true about chord shapes in general. I've been having loads of fun with my soprano uke.

I started learning ukulele when I was 62 years old. I have at least one of each size. My favorite is the baritone uke -- the tone is actually better than most of my other guitars, but the extra space on the fingerboard makes it much easier to play - more fun for me. For this tired old brain, it was great not having to worry about the bottom two strings! Hey, if I need those low notes, I will play my BASS ukulele.

I'm 48 with arthritis, and that's why I'm leaning towards the baritone ukulele as opposed to a guitar. I have a Luna soprano ukulele and I LOVE it, but sometimes I want a lower, deeper sound. I'm just trying to decide between the Luna and the Kala baritone.

@@anxylum Sorry to hear about the arthritis. Glad to hear that you are still playing music - it helps. I ordered a Caramel (Zebra stripe) baritone from Amazon for about $140, and am very happy with it. Looks like they are having shipping problems now, though. Luna and Kala make fine instruments, so it is probably a toss-up. Plinka Plinka.

For beginners like me, being able to put a capo on the 5th fret allows you to play with your friends who are playing GCEA-tuned instruments without have to pull out the circle of fifths and tranpose their tuning to baritone tuning. It also means you can carry one instrument, instead of two, when you play with other people.

I have a collection too. I don't have a baritone but all of mine have a special place. My mother bought me a John grey banjolele about 40 years ago but she never heard me play it as it is being refurbished. Last year I was told my mother had a week to live so I was given end of life visitations because of covid. To cut a long story short I was allowed to play my ukulele for her in the hospital........ She went on to live another seven months !!!! Now all of my seven ukes have a special place in my heart and for a while after her death I couldn't play..... I,m actually tearful now thinking about it but I realise that she would want me to carry on playing so I will.

@@arpitkatare9719 you can find a lot of tutorials on KZbin for all types of ukulele,s but the best way to learn is at a ukulele club but unfortunately the pandemic has shut down a lot of clubs. The ukulele is a very easy instrument to play and you can down load loads of music on line. Practicing is the most important thing to do but a lot of chords are really easy. Try to find music that is familiar to you as it is easier to learn to play songs that you know and like. You can actually play all sorts of music on the ukulele even classical. Just browse on KZbin for " ukulele players" and there are some very impressive players out there. Good luck and enjoy

I bought a baritone about ten years ago for use as a travel guitar. I can accompany myself whilst learning vocal parts when away from home, also sit in on Irish pub sessions, or any opportunity to jam. So much easier than lugging a guitar around, and loads of fun. I've since bought a KAM (copy of the Kala U-bass) solid bodied electric bass uke. I sold my MIJ Fender Jazz bass, as it was not getting any use now I have the U-bass.

I L♥️VE this Baritone! I wanted it so bad. Just too Rich for my purse. However, I am Madly In Love with it's cousin, the Kala KA-B. The sound is so rich and full. The action is smooth. It's a hybrid/crossbreed for sure. I have a soprano, 2 concerts, and a tenor that I've been playing for a while. My 'first born' concert will always be my favorite. We have a history together. I'm on Day 4 with my new KALA KA-B. It's taking a little adjustment to the chord difference. I'm starting with simple songs I know well. The transition is easier than expected. I had to depend upon reviews, videos and experience on making my purchase without touching and feeling! Thanks Marco for this review! I love the one I have now and truly recommend it. Things also change every day!....I may have the opportunity to add another to my happy family of Ukuleles!🦋

I love my 3 baris. I used to struggle playing guitar, started playing soprano uke but never liked the sound. I finally found a bari and when it became clear this was just a 4 string guitar and I would no longer have to transpose to play along with others, I was sold. I've upgraded my instrument every few years, going from a vintage Kent from the 60s, to a low end but very nice Caramel EA model, to the 8 string Kala, which is by far my favourite.

So I came across this video 5 days ago, and btw, Marco, you are my favorite Ukulele player here on KZbin and I am proud to be one of your Patreon members. I am in awe of your skill and love your classical style background and expression. After watching this video I immediately placed an order for the Kala KA-ZCT-B which was just delivered to me today and I am really enjoying it. I have only had Enya Uke's up to this point. A Tenor Nova Go Pro, a Tenor EUT-MAD EQ, and a concert EUC-MAD-XB Bernadette Signature. This is my first Kala and it is just magnificent. I love the deep tone and sound as it is the best of both worlds between a Uke and a guitar. I own a Taylor GS-mini in Mahogany which was my first stringed instrument, but it's 6 strings are just a little too complex for me as a beginner musician and that is why I switched over from guitar to Ukulele. Just like in the children's story of Goldilocks and the three bears, getting my hands on this Baritone Ukulele after playing on a concert and tenor size, makes playing a stringed instrument "just right" for me. Because of it's size and sound, I feel like I am playing a 3/4 sized acoustic guitar without any of the complications. Thank you so much for this video, Marco, it was just what I needed.

Marco! Thanks for your videos. Btw, Aquila makes baritone strings that can be tuned up to gcea tuning. I put these strings on my baritone and tune them a tone lower than standard gcea tuning to F, Bb, D, G, which gives me tuning of a renaissance lute or a guitar in standard tuning with a capo on the third fret. This sounds fantastic on my Kala baritone. Try this tuning, I think you’ll like it.

Truly great that you put some attention on the bariuke. Great, great instrument, with a strong character on itself. BTW, a lot of people try to learn guitar and quit after a short while, assuming it's to difficult and losing motivation. If they were introduced and started with the bariuke, after a while they would much more easily switch to the guitar (it's fundamentally "just" adding the upper 2 strings). Guitar teachers, guitar builders and shops are completely missing the point, by ignoring the promotion of the bariuke to the beginners. And continue to loose a huge amount of present and future sales and services...Cheers!

I have had a Kala baritone ukulele for several years. It’s a basic entry-level model but still sounds and plays well. I have experimented with putting tenor strings on it and tuning it to low G as well. It is perhaps a little redundant because I have several tenors and a couple of concerts but it actually does give an even richer and fuller tone than a tenor. It’s currently in baritone again. I don’t necessarily recommend putting tenor strings on a baritone. Because mine is composite, it didn’t suffer any ill effects from the higher tension and it was inexpensive enough that I was willing to take the risk. That might not be the case for other baritones. Of course, the other advantage of putting a baritone in tenor tuning is being able to play along with other ukulele players without the capo or transposing the chords.

tunning a baritone uke as a tenor (with the correct strings) can be a great way to have more finger space and a richer sound. I have a basically a 5 sting baritone uke tuned as a tenor with both a high and low G in reentrant tuning and it sounds so rich and full. If you want that signature uke sound then get a tenor or soprano but if you want a full rich sound with lost of fret board space, a Baritone with gGcea might be some you would love.

I have a 8-string Baritone, itʻs a mini 12-string guitar. All my group members love it for it brings an added voice to our music. In addition to the Baritone, I also bring my 6-string tenor Kamaka ukulele and my 8-string tenor Oscar Schmidt. These bring different sounds to Hawaiian music.

I'm ukulele player that also plays the bass. So baritone is no problem for me. 💪💙.. I relate the strings , six strings and four strings like skiers and snowboarders. I've always been a border and played four strings. That's just who I am... Baritones have such a beautiful sound tho. I love my tenor ukulele I cannot stop playing it. But I got a very sneaky suspicion if I get a baritone that I won't put it down.. and yes I want to join the community of Marco's ukulele players. You should just build a town and you Maro, will be the mayor of ukuleleville

I call my tenor uke a canoe and my guitar my boat, but a baritone is just a simple guitar but actually the neck is slightly wider than guitar. So if you have fat fingers for guitar try the baritone. But if you want to play uke on a baritone just capo on 5th fret. Likewise if you want to play baritone on a uke capo to 7th fret.

I'm a 70 y/o classically trained pianist whose has had a true love for classical guitar music all my life. My son took it up when young instead of piano, but he's not around now. A few weeks ago, I impulse ordered a Donner concert uke pkg on Amazon with the intention of teaching my 6 y/o granddaughter who lives with me (in addition to our piano lessons) . Well, it arrived and neh, would absolutely not stay in tune. I have perfect pitch, timbre was not pleasant enough and it just drove me crazy. The action was too hard and metal fret ends terribly sharp; I finally packed it up and returned. Decided I needed to do a bit more research and seriously contemplated the baritone uke with a deeper sound. Fortunately, after just discovering your KZbins (love them) and your commentary, I am definitely rethinking my new purchase of a ukulele. I need to begin on the easy side with arthritis in left wrist; the tenor seems like a good compromise. Also don't want to skimp on quality, because if it doesn't have a beautiful mellow tone, with ease of playing, I won't be inspired to pursue your channel. How do I know if I will have ease pressing on the strings, forming chords without having to apply so much pressure? Is there a way to adjust this on all ukes? I'm going to have to toughen up my left fingertips, I know, because MANY yrs ago I played simple tunes on a uke when teaching in elementary schools. Low G high G - you play beautifully on anything!!! Best maker... don't want cheap again, but do want one worth owning and passing on to my grandchildren. Any other suggestions out there, pls?

Great video. Look forward to seeing more of your videos. Long time guitar player, and I’ve got a soprano uke I’m not crazy about but I’ve been thinking I’d really like a baritone, and your video was just what I needed to decide to go for it and get one. Thanks!

They sell gCEA strings for Baritone. I like that better than a Tenor. I like the spacing, size, volume etc. I'd rather have two baritones with one being DGBE and one being gCEA than a Baritone and a Tenor

Interested in trying a baritone now. As for chord shapes I’d probably approach it as a guitarist and use guitar chord shapes due to the tuning being the same as the top 4 strings on a guitar.

Excellent information on the Baritone ukulele. I have one and love rhe tone, just not sure what to do with it. I tends to play around with guitar stuff even though missing the low end. Look forward to your insight into the baritone

Hearing this instrument in a recording, I imagine it could easily be confused with a nylon string guitar, with a capo high up on the neck. Although the distinctive ukulele tone character is still present.

OMG, I am SO excited for this video!! ❤❤❤ Marco, I picked up the ukelele a few months ago because of your channel and I'm now also a happy member of the uke fam on Patreon. Coincidentally though, I bought this exact Kala ukelele because I loved the deeper tone compared to the concert uke I learned on (but I tuned mine to GCEA with a high G since I'm still in early days). Now that I'm a few of your lessons in, I'm thrilled to hear you play on the same instrument and keep learning even more on the baritone! Edit: Oh noooo,... I just got to the end of the video and I'm totally that person who tuned it like a Tenor when I shouldn't have. I should probably restring it back again :(

Thank you for the presentation. I love the Baritone Ukulele, I love the Tenor...trying to learn the Baritone, but feel as though I am missing the qualities of the Tenor. Fewer resources online for the Baritone, but I suppose if I had to choose, it would be the Baritone...but I don't have to choose, so hurrah! I look forward to future Baritone lessons.

Thank you for the comparison! I love the baritone ukulele and have had one for a long time. I took to it easily, coming from guitar. I also have a soprano ukulele, but I struggle to hold it because it's so small. Recently, I've been experimenting with a drop-D tuning on the baritone (lower the E string 1 step to D, resulting in an open Gmaj chord). It's been fun!

My collection includes soprano, concert, tenor (1 high “g” & one 5 string) baritone and U-bass. I like playing them all though the soprano and U- bass don’t see as much use as the other 4. I really enjoy the baritone and have some music specific to it. But I often practice Uke music on the baritone and just accept that I am working in a different key. Still, some music works better for me on the tenor or concert just because my mashed up mechanic’s fingers can’t reach the necessary frets on the baritone. But I will confess that finger picking the baritone is pure joy, and I love the lower, fuller tone. I’ve thought about getting another baritone and stringing it like a low “g” tenor. (I don’t have a straight low “g”.) But it might be hard to justify the cost…now if I could tell my wife it was from a sponsor…

I have progressed from a soprano to a tenor to a baritone. Not only that, I am in love with the DGBD tuning and have even turned my 8 string Kala Tenor into a baritone tuning of DGBD plus my Gretch long neck tenor is tuned to DGBD..love it and will never switch. All I need is to find a Brazilian cavaquinho player group to play with. Slack Key DGBD or GCEG is the best ! I hope you will do some tutorials on the DBGD Baritone?
