I visit a market in San Luis Potosi to try the typical dishes of the region. Walking through the aisles I discover a stall where they sell something I had never seen before: bush rat meat. At first I'm scared but when I hear the history and nutritional properties of the “miraculous” rat broth, I decide to buy one. I look for a lady in the market who knows how to prepare the broth, a delicacy in San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas. I am told that the dish was invented in times of famine in the desert. People had no food so they tried the meat of field rats. They realized that it was tasty and also gave them incredible energy, cured various diseases and even gave them great power in bed. Field rats live in the bush by the cactus and not in the sewers like city rats. I was assured that field rats spend their time eating fruits and vegetables so the meat is clean, tasty, and full of vitamins. How does the meat taste? Does it really give you great energy when you eat it? I decide to try the famous broth to find out the answers.
