True story, I swear: I was climbing at Table Rock in North Carolina several years ago. We were in the parking lot gearing up for our climb when a car pulled up next to us. The driver got out and commented that he really liked my Misty Mountain Cadillac harness. I hadn't owned it very long and was always having trouble putting it on. I told this guy that I hated the harness and thought it was a piece of garbage. His partner started to laugh and leaned over to me and said that this guy was the owner of Misty Mountain Products. I sort of felt like a jerk, but the guy was super nice about the whole thing and gave me some great pointers for putting the harness on. He also mentioned that he had heard my complaint many times before. Since then, I've never had any problems with the harness, but think about that day every time I put it on.

As someone that has done product development, an open, unexpected chance for criticism like that is super valuable. After dozens to hundreds of revisions, we lose track of what it is like to not be in the weeds. Not everyone thinks like us and if they know who we are, they tend to be too nice when giving a review.

@@wingardTube unfortunately not now. I'm currently out west working security for a movie set for a production that Kevin Costner is doing here in Southern Utah. The Red River Gorge was my home crag, but I'd try to get to North Carolina a couple of times a year. In my opinion, it's some of the best rock climbing that there is!

Super awesome to see Misty Mountain highlighted on your channel! Forgot to mention that they are one of the last harness manufacturers still sewing harnesses in the US (shout out to Goose and the crew in Banner Elk!). Not the latest fancy tech but tried and true and super good enough. Yeeehaw!

My climbing days were in the '70s. There were not many harnesses to choose from but there were brick & mortar stores where you could try things on. The Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) store near me even had one of the first climbing walls (a 2 story fireplace chimney). I chose the Whillans Sit Harness. Still have it. I used it for sport, big wall & alpine/ice climbing. It was wonderful, even in a long leader fall it was comfortable. I also used it for climbing poles and trees with spike climbers. These days it is my safety harness if I go up on a roof. Since the synthetic material is 50 years old it would probably fail below rating on your machine but it is super good enough to keep me from sliding off a roof. This video is wonderfully informative. It is scientific as measurements of belt and body are compared and contrasted. You actually put it on and commented on the usefulness of the various attributes as well as making this a tutorial on the fit. All that and a bit of well done humor besides ... who could ask for more. Keep up the good work!

I love my Misty Mountain harness! I got mine custom, combining the Cadillac belt and the Titan leg loops. I mostly aid climb and rappel, so for as much time as I hang out sitting in it, that combo is the best of both worlds for comfort without too much bulk. I also went for the quick adjust buckles instead of the double-pass ones. No regrets here!
@brandonsparks57864 ай бұрын
The very best harness I've ever worn. The ridiculous amount of gear you can comfortably carry up a wall on their cadillac is incredible. It's the most comfortable harness to sit and belay in, and falls don't have any pinch points. 10/10 would recommend
@dragade1015 ай бұрын
Ask around for women to try out and climb in different harnesses. Ideally creating a table of waist, hip and thigh measurements. Not everyone is petite and someone's curves might not be what the manufacturer thought of. To the point you might want the medium or large leg loops but small waist for a specific harness.

it would be cool to see a guide about chest harnesses from you. im not a very active viewer so i might have missed it but personally i never really knew the purpose/when you should use one before doing a in person climbing safety training. (videos on the internet are cool but having a certified guide with you when doing stuff for the first time is great)

@starfilmsanimation5 ай бұрын
It depends on your use case. Like a caving chest harness is very different than a rope access one
@Standby4titan5 ай бұрын
@@starfilmsanimation even more reasons for why a guide would be cool. My training was a mix of sport climbing and via ferrata climbing, where you would use a chest harness when you had a backpack above 10kg with you (at least that's what the guide said). I've only done very light caving and that was fully guided I've done "industrial" climbing with a industrial harness which was a full body one (idk the right term but it had the chest part integrated). I put industrial into quotations because we never really got trained on the gear, they basically just old us to clip in anytime we were 1m or higher off the ground (working in a ski resort)
@charlotteice57045 ай бұрын
In rope access/industrial climbing, the chest part of the harness houses the sternal (chest) and dorsal (between your shoulder blades) fall arrest points. If you are using a fall arrest system, you need to clip it to the dedicated fall arrest points on your harness (labeled with "A" or "A/2" if it's two loops making up one (sternal) fall arrest point, the latter often found on fall arrest-only harnesses). The side rings and the front ring on a harness are only rated and in the right position for holding your weight, but they are not meant to absorb the forces that occur when it's your weight + the velocity of you falling as they're not rated for that and because they're in a position where it could hurt you. Because rope access technicians always need to have two contact points, which is what they're standing on + their fall arrest system in a fall arrest usecase or their primary system (eg descender) + their backup (which fall arrest sized forces can occur in) in a rope access usecase, they always need to have those fall arrest points and thus the chest part of the harness, so they wear full body harnesses. Another use for an upper harness part is for using a chest ascender. A chest ascender needs to be attached by its bottom and by its top, so a chest harness can fulfill this purpose. Arborists are allowed to climb without a backup, so tree climbing harnesses do not have a chest part, so arborists use a neck loop for holding their chest ascender. Full body harnesses also allow you to lean back into them, so they're safer if the possibility of not being able to stay upright with your muscles only is a concern, like if you're carrying a heavy backpack or if your usecase is an industrial/occupational one where you need to be safe and rescuable even if you have a heart attack/go unconscious while climbing. Those are the things speaking for a full body harness. What speaks against it is that it does lower your freedom of movement.

It would be really cool to have the width of the leg loops and waistbelt listed for the harnesses in your store. I know that width isn't everything when it comes to comfort, but it is a decent indication.

You can have a single buckle harness that will be always centered. Take a look at Edelrid Moe III for example - the whole padding slides on the belt. I like this design.

Andy Kirkpatrick advises: NEVER place metal gear center on your back. Even a mild fall could cause paraplegia if you fall on a rock and the metal impacts your spine. I would consider cutting the back gear loop off. My local friend swears I saved him from paraplegia when he fell on his but real hard last year, about a year after I gave him the advice.

Hey one thing that would've been super helpful is thigh loop sizing. It's not really a big deal for mist of us guys but for women it can be a pretty big deal. For example my partner will fit a large womens harness but needs an XL cause the leg loops won't fit her thighs and this means she has to crank down the waist super hard.

Given this is PPE, how are these tested/rated? Has an independent lab rated them? Is there production quality control that ensures every harness meets safety requirements?
