For what purpose? Even with more power, I don't think that card could possibly run any faster. The power connector may not even be wired up on such a low spec card. It may only be there if it's a shared board design with a more powerful GPU that needs the connector.

Before going out and soldering on a 6 pin connector you could also try lowering the power limit in MSI afterburner and see if that works.
@AlonzoTG
@AlonzoTG 5 жыл бұрын
going to need to de-solder the existing holes, first, suggest a bulb-type desoldering iron, A cheap 25 watt soldering iron should be the best for the new part, want it mounted firm and flush, wait until the iron is nice and warm, touch the joint, then apply the solder. For those joints, probably use the thicker type rosin core lead-tin solder. The silver solder is not as good and requires a bit more heat. Don't spend more than about a second and a half on each pad. Finally, use a pair of nippers to trim off any excess length from the pins on the back side of the board. Also check for other components that might have been omitted.

Just don't waste ur money/time and at first just try underclock/undervolt ur card just to match the 75W, that PCI-E motheboard slot is able to deliver, if games, keeps crashing on the lower power consumption, that means - the power is not a problem, just try it out it will take like 10 minutes :D

The cards without the connector usually have their cpu and memory clock speed lowered so they don't draw as much wattage. The easy fix is to run msi afterburner and set lower clocks speeds in software and give it a shot. If all goes well then either find a bios from a Eco card or do a bios edit and lower the speeds to what didn't crash in afterburner.

dude, newbie enthusiast here in the same boat, bought a graphics card claiming to be gtx 1050 ti for like $67 + shipping+taxes here in canada. I also like you noticed the missing 6 pin pcie power socket. i haven't taken the card apart but it defo doesn't accept any available drivers from Nvidia. Furthermore my PC crashes just with the card installed with blue screen "thread stuck" error. I wasn't sent any drivers or a disc, just a printed sheet of paper with screenshots of the driver install processs. On those screenshots it clearly shows that the Nvidia installer has recognized the card as a GT730! I'd love to see this next video you're planning on doing. This has got my tinkering bone itching...

If the problem is the power connector you should ensure that the circuit that take the power from that connector to the power section of the board is fully populated with the relative components, such as resistors, fuses and capacitors. Find an high resolution picture of the board that matches the bios you used, and compare the area between the power connector and the circuit near it

It won't fix it (most likely). Chances are the PCB does not have the traces connected, other issues are going to be the quality of the PCB/VRM's on the card if this was never designed for the 6x pin. Your video is pretty good overall, but there are a few things you have overlooked. One of the main things that I was thinking of is that there exists are DDR3 variant of the GTS 450 that doesn't have the 6 pin power connector. The other thing I was thinking of is that there exists a Quadro workstation card that utilizes the same GPU as the GTS 450 and that uses GDDR5 but doesn't require the 6 pin PCI-E power connector, called the Quadro 2000. So, if you do attempt to solder the PCIE power connector on, I would first make sure that your card actually utilizes GDDR5 and if it doesn't, attempt to flash the BIOS from a DDR3 variant. If it *does* utilize GDDR5, you can either solder on a new power connector or attempt to flash the Quadro 2000 BIOS. Nice video.

just grab an old Molex connector and solder the wires on in the right order. It will transfer enough power between it and the socket, and work just as well as a 6 pin. However the crashing probably comes from a RAM amount that is not correct to the bios which would require a modified bios. I run HL2 on a newer but cut down version of that card ( GT 730 128 bit, 1gb ddr3 ) in my older retro box and it will run 60 frames on ultra at 1080p. I wonder if trying one of those bios would do better.

I have a genuine GTS 450 and it is a perfect budget ( extremely budget ) GPU and everything works just fine but there is a one issue... You must to find a very old GPU Driver because the newest ones causes self-underclocking problem and fixing this problem with tweaks in Nvidia Control centre doesn't do much more. So if you are decided to bring this card a second life you must to do a 2 things ( one you already did ( bios ) ). you must to solder 6pin con , and install older gpu driver. Mine is overclocked from around 740MHz to 870MHz and i can play some older titles like GTA V , BF 3 , Skyrim , ROTTR at 50fps Even the newest titles but on low settings. Keep going and fix it!

Have faith. Soldering on the 6 pin connector would be cool to watch even if you messed it up, cheers.

You don't have to solder on a power connector. Nvidia made a quadro variant of this card called the quadro 2000 that had the same chip just no 6 pin. I had one and discovered I could flash a gts 450 bios onto it and use the gerforce drivers instead of the quadro drivers. So I flashed a bios that worked but had the same issue as you, all my games would crash if they maxed out the gpu. The solution was just undervolting and underclocking the card with Msi afterburner till it didn't crash anymore. Afterwords for a more permanent solution I used a Nvidia bios editing software to adjust the stock clockspeeds and voltage permanently, after that I had no more issues and the card worked fine. If your issue is actually related to power delivery this solution will work for you aswell.

But then he will still not be able to run the card to the best of its ability.

I have 2 450GTS's in SLi, and they can run DX12 Games like Sniper Elite 3, 4 at payable framrates. I paid like $90 for the pair back when i purchased the i7 3770K. You can also force flash older nVIDIA cards as long as you have a CPU with a iGPU. No need for external devices.

Thanks to the sources I might get a working and nice Radeon sometime soon. I’m gonna buy a bricked one and reflash it with the correct BIOS.

Yes, you should solder the missing connector in. It is a piece of cake, but watch the connector orientation!

That's a very easy solder joint to make just use a chisel tip and some high lead solder because it's more forgiving then silver

There exist no reality where you should not solder that power connector onto that PCB.It has to be done, to see if things work! Thanks for the interesting video!

If available I would just cut apart an old PCIe cable from a modular PSU and just solder the wires directly to the PCB. Another option would be to do the same with a Molex to PCIe cable. I know one of those sockets probably doesn't cost much but I figure at the very least that would save you some time by not having to order one. (assuming that you haven't by now already)
