Hey tiff, some pointers here! So when you are holding a scorer, hold it at a 45 degree angle from the glass and CUT STRAIGHT! Also make sure that you are standing up when you score as it is easier to get better score lines and also prevents certain risks of the glass breaking. You can tell what the top of the scorer is by the little nail on top. Please do not drag your score line off the edge to the point that the scorer hits the table! This can cause little pieces of glass to get stuck in it and cause it to not work. Also, when cutting, only have one score line at a time on the glass. Multiple score lines can cause the glass to break into multiple pieces or where you are not expecting it too (so only score one line, and only have one of the pieces on the glass at a time). If you are worried that you don't have enough glass, cut it into slightly larger peices than what you will need. I would also suggest using the cut paper templets to lay them out on the piece to make sure there is enough glass. Glass breaks in with the least resistance, meaning it will follow a stright line more willingly, but that straight line will go all the way to the edge. Because of this, cut edge to edge. For the copper foil, I suggest using black backed copper foil on clear glass, especially when useing black patina. However, because you are the artist, it is up to you! Black pitina does show less mistakes in the soddering lines tho, so I would suggest that for beginners. If you notice that the copper foil is slightly to large on the other side you can modify it with a exacto knife. It was hard to tell in the video if you did this or not, but make sure the edges (start and end) of the tape is faced twords another piece of glass as it prevents peeling later on or when the flux is added. To make it easier on yourself I would also use the back end on a sharpe to flatten the copper as it is more readily available and is easy to hold. Make sure when you are flattening it, however, that you are doing it on an old book as it lets the glass have some give so it doesn't break. Finally, when you are putting on the copper foil, make sure to have all of the peices together and on top of the templete you are using. This allows you to see what pieces need to be grozed so the pieces will fit together. You can also then tell if you need to recut a piece of glass. I hope these tips were helpful! Have fun cutting glass!

This was one of the things I missed most about art class in high school. If I remember correctly, to help with cutting your pieces, glue your paper pieces to the glass to help as an outline. And keep the paper on throughout the grinding process to make sure the sizing stays fairly close. And when your soldering the corners of your pieces, you can tape your pieces together so they don't move around as much. This is just what I remember from school, I hope it's helpful and watching this has made me want to try stained glass again, thanks for the inspiration. Also, you can try mosaics with your small pieces, so they don't go to waste.

Way to dive into it. I recommend watching some of the episodes of Stained Glass with Vicki Payne that aired on TLC way back when. I grew up with the show along side Bob Ross, and they walk you through projects from selecting and buying glass to finishing. It looks like she's done a lot since then, so you can also find newer stained glass content from her.

Glass artist here! Well done for your first go. I’m sure there have been many comments on how to cut glass but remember one score at a time before snapping it, one extra thing, when you score the glass use lighter pressure so you can’t really see a mark on the glass this will prevent the glass breaking in wrong direction. I think picking a geometric shape with iridescent glass was probably the most difficult way to start out so stick with cathedral for a little while, but stick with it you’ll find everyone has their own method and you’ll develop your own methods. There’s no right or wrong way as long as your having fun 💗
