Making a reaonsable sail out of some kind of cloth is a lot harder, i assume. I've made one out of bedsheets, but i never tested it on the water. It's shaped like a modern sail, it has battens etc. I just never tested it. I wanted to see how crappy you can build a sail and if it would even survive long enough to come to a plane.
@Aheitchoo4 ай бұрын
You make it out of a tarp. Pretty common on home built sail boats. The tricky part is the mast and boom. You can do it with 2x4's and broom sticks but its really heavy. Use a rope loop for the joint with the board.

40 years ago, Mike Waltze took down a hollow-core door from his bedroom, mounted a sail and fin on it and got it going, then when home and rehanged the door. Steve Wilkings took photos of all of it. Significantly lower stakes than your project, and significantly more flotation. Still, bravo, especially on that live-or-die jibe. Next step: put a foil on it. Also, big up for the Midnight Oil clip.

Dear Nico, where do I even begin to express my admiration for you? When I first stumbled across one of your videos about three years ago, I was instantly impressed with your charisma and windsurfing expertise. While some of your more recent videos haven’t been as tremendously entertaining as the classics, this one was something special. The sheer ingenuity required to make a vessel that works so well from was downright impressive, and I was shocked when you made such an amazing gybe on the board. Nico, you have restored my faith in the internet windsurfing community and for that I am forever in debt to you. Sincerely yours, Daniel

Maybe even slalom x stuff too depending how much of a challenge you want to make it. Really keep up the good work love your videos and even use them when I give windsurfing lessons or to show people who are struggling with for instance light wind plaining. Hope to see you once and race with you on the foil!

Brilliant. It reminds me of when, many years ago, we made a wooden ironing board into a snowboard. The conversion entailed (1) removing the legs (2) spraying it gold (3) attaching a person with roof-rack straps. It was not very good (it didn’t budge at all), though it looked fly. But it had even less rocker than Slim Shoddy 😂 God only knows how you got this monster up to 17 knots, or pulled off that gybe on the wave. Stunning! Keep it up and we’ll see you winning in Lanzarote on a true full-wood slalom…

Thanks for proving something for me. I have shaped my own boards since the late '80s and one thing that always pissed me off was the long held misconceptions that rocker is what makes the board turn. It certainly has an effect on how the board turns but you just proved once and for all that a flat board will carve jibe just fine! BTW that was fun to watch.

I would recommend 2,1 mm more rocker in the tail up to 46 cm of width, and then 6.7 degrees more scoop to the front. A bit more double concaves until 98 cm from the nose will improve handling in chop dramatically. Moving the mast base 9 mm more forward, and using a fin with 2 degrees more rake would do it... And again, if you use 100 % titanium screws you would save 0.5 grams of the total board weight giving new levels top end speed and control... This is really crazy 🙂 Per

If you wrap it with glassfiber and epoxy its a wood sandwich board 😂 It would be better to use 2 thin sheets plywood with foam in between (pur insulstion foam). That way you can give it a good amount off scoop, get the finbox inside the board and give it some volume. To add more strength in the right places add more layers of plywood. If you need more advise please send me a message, i really like the idea 😂!
