So, do you like mornings? Or do you dread them? I have always been a morning person, there’s nothing better than waking up when the whole world is still asleep. So this is what I have been doing, getting up earlier at around 5:30, turning back my rhythm to early mornings to get as many hours as possible before cooking lunch at around noon. I find that there are some things that happen to you, mentally and physically, when you wake up that early, so hello, let’s talk about it!
I talk about
- why i get up early
- what are the benefits of waking early
- being awake before everyone else
- the sense of calm
- uninterrupted morning work
- lazy afternoons
- feeling sleepy
- creating a new sleep pattern
- the problem with waking too early

Okay hear me out 😅 As a night owl, I’ve always found it odd that people say they like waking up early because they have “more time” in the day- when, in fact, you have the exact same amount of time (unless you’re sleeping less) you’re just pushing it all back by a few hours 😅 I guess some people feel like they just mentally can’t work past 5 or 6pm, so they do technically have “more” time before evening hits. Personally, I love sleeping until 9 or 10am, working until 7, dinner at 8, then I’ve got a whole 5 hours of free time to enjoy before I go to bed around 1am 🌙

People think I'm crazy but I get up at 4AM, do yoga, walk 7 miles, then come back and start my day. I love doing my exercise first thing in the day. Really ready for bed by 9:30 though 🙂

I did a summer internship as a baker a few years ago, which meant waking up around 03:30 am every morning. As much as I would not recommend doing this longterm (regarding both physical and mental health) it is a short term experience that I absolutely cherish. There is an unprecedented calm about those hours of the day. The morning walk to work during those first hours of Stockholm summer sun was something else and it actually inspired a lot of creative writing for me. As a natural morning person, it also kind of made me realize what natural night owls experience during those latest hours of the day. It's fun to read the comment section on this video. We are sooo different and there are probably natural reasons for this going back thousands of years. I am both grateful and sorry for being a morning person, as our societies often are totally adapted to our rythm. It's unfair!

i'm a total nightowl. so hearing your routine sounds like nothing, that would ever want to try. but i'm so happy for you, that you found your rhythm. i hate it, if i have to get up before 8 in the morning. i take it very slow, i try to be in the office at 9, and eagerly await the coffeebreak at 10. then it's slowly getting better. after lunch i'm quite ok. and after 3 in the afternoon i start feeling the energy. i'm super productive until 7, can finish all the work for the day in quite environment, as most of the other people leave the office at 5. then i go home for a small dinner, go to do sports, head home around 11, eat the big dinner, and have my most creative time from 11.30 to 1.30 in the morning. i can do whatever i like, and prepare everything for the next day. when i'm back in the office at 9, i can read all the replies from the early birds, which is very nice for both of us i think.

Omg hello fellow night owl! We are so similar in our energy spurts. I dread mornings ever since I was a kid, especially if we have to wake up before the sun is out. I love the moments after everyone is asleep and the world is quiet. In my mind, I am getting ahead of the morning people! Night times are still and peaceful, and seems like there is unlimited time for me to get my most important work done. I do my most creative and focused work at night. In the day time, I save that for more scattered short term tasks like emails, going to meetings, run errands. I'm glad we're not alone 🦉🌝

My mum was always up from 5, and I grew up thinking that this is what mums do. Now, I am 35, a mum, and this is really what mums do 😂😂🥹I wake up early to have quiet time for myself before everyone is up. And first time in my life I understand why my mother was up so early. She would start with a prayer and gratitude, which I try to implement now.

I'm a night owl and definitely at my best later in the day, I love the quiet in the evening when everyone else is in bed. My kids try to get me up this early but I try to persuade them to go back to sleep 😂 If I actually got up at 5.30 I would have two noisy boys joining me so I wouldn't get any peace. All about finding your best rhythm - glad you've found yours

I watched this far too late, taking off my makeup, after a very hard few days preparing the house and food for visitors. I am out of my routine with the visitors staying. I am absolutely craving getting up early, having a sea swim,’then a long leisurely coffee and just doing things my way. I absolutely cannot wait to get under my cool sheets. This made me realise how much I need my own routine

I prefer being awake when everyone else is asleep at night! :)) I usually go to bed after 1-2 and wake up about 10, my productive time starts at noon and it's been like that since I was little. School and uni were always a nightmare and I'm so glad that these days I get to decide when to wake up and when to work.

I love both dawn and dusk. Those transitional periods just have some magical quality about them. I'm naturally an early riser, 5am is my favourite wakeup time, except in the winter, in the winter I never want to leave my bed.

Left to my own devices, it's 2AM to 10AM for me. Works perfectly, with a good amount of energy. I looove the quiet and darkness of the night. My best ideas come late at night because I feed my brain throughout the day. In the morning I am just a lump :) Also, a mega introvert, I need hours of alone time after I've been with people. So if I am spending time with anyone who is on a "regular schedule" (after work, etc.) and then get home at 10PM or so, I'll be up for hours. On that note... You mentioned getting sleepy at night around 9. Do you go out with friends, or attend lectures, plays, etc? How do you stay up and enjoy it? I was talking to someone, who is a "lark" like you, once at a wedding party, and she said, "It's way past my bedtime, I can barely keep my eyes open". I think it was 10:30 :)

I started to work for a company that is on the other side of the globe, around 1,5 year ago. I was never a morning person, but I had to start waking up between 5:30 and 6am. I was nervous for this change in my life and all together I was waking up early out of stress so it wasn't really difficult in the beginning. Later on, I've relaxed already about the job itself and I've learnt how AMAZING it is to have the whole afternoon for yourself. Clearly something has changed in my body and the biological clock too, due to my age. Now, I would never go back to the previous rhythm. I hope I can live like that for the rest of my life (I doubt it but hey, let me dream). My personal peace was never better than now. I finish between 2-3 pm, I have a late lunch and I spend the rest of the day doing what I love.

I have been 5:30AM girly for a month now, first out of necessity to pick up lil bro from the night shift. Then I would waste time doom scrolling. Its only now I've been using this time for me! I go for a walk as soon is the sky is just light enough, followed by yoga or the gym. Exercise now feels like the best cup of coffee and I feel giddy throwing on comfy clothes to hit a tail and catch some early sun! Lovely video Jenny! From the time I watched your first video filmed at your cottage in the countryside, I new I would be seeing you on my bookshelf. You speak like a writer because you were always meant to be one❤

I would have related to this years ago when I found that early mornings tend to be my most creative period of the day. But ever since that year of increased b*rnout risk which during rather stressful phases at work has caused me to wake up worried at various points during the night, I cherish every night that I am able to sleep past 5:30 without any worries attached. Do-nothing-nights are a pleasure indeed. Will I get back to having non-work-related ideas during the creative morning hours or will I just sleep in and not care? For the time being, it's rather the latter, tbh. Here's wishing you lots of happy early mornings!

I’m a night owl and if someone doesn’t stop me, I can be awake for way too long. I’ve always favoured a late night before an early morning, ever since I was a child. I love reading for way too late, like 3-4 in the morning. And if there is a party, I will stay for as long as it goes on 😅 with that said, I also like the calmness of the morning when everyone is asleep. I’ve also learned that my life works better when I try to be more of a morning person since those occasional super early mornings become way easier

I naturally wake up around 7, though my kitten is training me to get up at 6. I'm definitely an early bird. I love having time to cuddle my kitten, slowly eat my breakfast and take some time while getting ready for the day. When I then sit down on my desk to work or write, I am much more productive and way less stressed.

I had a science teacher who slept only 4 hours every night. He didn't need more than that, he would just read and study for himself in those hours and he would tell the class that he enjoyed his extra hours so much! But he also added that most people couldn't do with just 4 hours of sleep every night. He did mention that getting up early if you could was a good way to get more work done. I, myself am a night owl. I work better in the evening and the late hours and I'll sleep comfortably until around 10am. Sometimes when I do have to wake up as early as 5 am or so, the waking up itself is hard, but those early hours, once I'm awake, feel pretty amazing. I get what you mean. Though usually when I do have to get up so early, it's to catch a plane or do something amazing

I am a night owl that longs to be a morning person. I don't feel like I have less time being a night owl, I just do things later into the night. For instance it's 1:20 am in Los Angeles right now and I just finished vacuuming my room before I go to sleep. But there's this perception that being a morning person is healthier, so I'm always trying to make myself wake up and work out first thing, but I fail almost every single morning. 😆😩

I'm afraid to seem lazy even if I work my ass off every day, every content creator that inspires me is an early bird, and waking up when the world is already moving fast through the day is an uncomfortable feeling.
