I had the pleaseure of playing there in 1992 or 1993. We were 4 univercity students driving around France for a week playing golf. We had no knowledge about this golf club, we just drove up and asked if we could play. They looked surprised, went away for a couple of minutes and came back and said - sure! They did not know the price of the greenfee, which thought was odd. We ended paying the quivalent to €8 each. I remember that last words from the greenkeeper "Don't fix the divots or repair pitch marks, we will do that." During the day we saw one (1) more player. Not until a few years later I learned that it was avery private club that no one but the members get to play. I still think of what happened that day. It was an absolutely amazing course!

Beautiful property thanks for bringing it to KZbin. In general I think golf is too expensive considering I have been playing for over 40 years I have seen it become out of reach for a lot of people, I'm manily talking about equipment prices and public course prices. It's a shame because I can't justify it anymore both in terms of the time commitment and the $$ to play at a level I'm used to playing at. I live vicariously through KZbin videos now.

Thank you for your nuanced comments at the end of the video, Pete. There is something disconcerting about places like this, esp. considering the relative want and deprivation out there (esp. in France). I note this having learned the game at one of the stuffier/pretentious gated community country clubs here in the States. Working as a caddy there from 12-14 yrs old was an early (class) consciousness raiser.

The Carnegie club at Skibo castle is up there for exclusivity in Scotland.
@markhenderson5866Ай бұрын
A few years ago, just after lockdown, Skibo allowed one tee time per day to mere mortals. A friend and I got a tee time with our 16 year old sons to celebrate the year of my 60th and his 50th birthdays. On the face of it, it looked a lot of money for a four ball but I have never been so spoiled and welcomed, in such an understated and friendly way, anywhere, ever. It was an 'all inclusive' day, including a memory bag filled with so much kit, our names on lockers, an amazing 3 course lunch, a course that had no-one on it but us, and a kilted chap welcoming us off the 18th green with a dram. Everyone from the director of golf, to the waiting and shop staff treated us so well. As Pete said at Les Bordes, no feeling awkward, out of place, just awesome friendly customer service in a stunning backdrop. Highland hospitality gives anywhere a run for its money 😀

I played the old course many years ago. It was unseasonably cold in the spring and every course was closed due to frost. They opened the course just for us. It was absolutely unreal to know that the greenkeeping staff went out to prepare everything for us. Safe to say that it was a little too much course for me back then. I remember the course record, off the tips, was something like 1 or 2 over.

I am a member of a provate golf club.. it’s a very nice club though not quite this nice and 2/3 of the cost. But you hit the nail on the head, the exclusive atmosphere is what we pay for. For me personally it’s nothing to do with holding my nose up I’m nowhere near one of the wealthiest members by a long shot. It’s the privacy, no tee times just walk out and play whenever you feel like it. You almost always have no one in front or behind you just enjoying life and a good round of golf. The people are always nice to each other (I’m from Georgia in the US, we are a very old and traditional southern country club). The staff are like family, our children are treated as though these are their aunts uncles and grandparents the kids absolutely love being there. Sit by the fire in one of the lounges, or in the bar. Play cards in the locker room and have staff that are assigned in there so you just have drinks and food brought in to you. The money spent is ridiculous to say the least, I come from a very humble background and honestly never thought I would be in a position to join this club or any other like it. But I will say if you enjoy golf at its finest, 5 star meals, having a spa like place to call your own whenever you’d like. And somewhere to escape to after a long week to just let it all fall to the wayside… then it’s worth a look. I thank the lord my family has been blessed with the opportunity to enjoy something like it.

I was holidaying in the Loire Valley in 2019 and one day, while motoring up a quiet country road, came to the 'tradesmen's gate' of Les Bordes. 40k Euros is an impressively high membership price! Still, I'm more baffled at the cost of memberships in the UK...1k pounds? For the whole year? At a fully private club or is public/non-member play allowed? In the Dallas, TX area you can't find a membership to a fully private club for less than $10k up front, plus at least $450 monthly.
@tomsefton491Ай бұрын
