I absolutely adore felting! I am self-taught but here are some tips I picked up: Proportions are always tricky to judge, but when in doubt, I always just make the head bigger to give it a more cutesy vibe. Also, keep stabbing! Even when you think you are done, you should stab it some more. Kits usually come with 2 different sized needles: 1. thicker with the ridges spaced apart more (this is used for building the structure of the piece) and 2. thin with the ridges closer to the bottom (gently use this needle when adding details on your piece) . Finally, hairspray is super helpful at the end to stick the flyaway wool down and get a nice pic!
@AnnikaVictoria244 жыл бұрын
Stab... more?? 🥺 I stabbed for four hours! How much stabbing does one need to do? I think I would get RSI hahaha. But thank you for the tips! I am sure people more patient than I will appreciate them ☺️
@vex15814 жыл бұрын
@@AnnikaVictoria24 I wonder if it was the type of wool in the kit? Some wools felt easier than others, but either way I tend to spend a couple of days on my felting projects. Good on you that you could do that for 4 hours lol!
@karinahickman95794 жыл бұрын
The poor panda reminds me of my first project, needle felt penguin from Daiso. But i tried again awhile later with a better kit and it went better. The rhythmic stabbing is cathartic and easier on my hands than my knitting. I'm making my baby neice a menagerie!

For a first try, this was really good! Don't be too harsh on yourself about proportions, they're tough to judge, especially with a new medium like roving. I felted some mushrooms for my wrist pincushion. I think making mushrooms is far easier than animals, because it still looks good even if the proportions aren't quite right. Plus having a tiny mushroom garden to hold my pins is amazing and makes me feel like a magical fairy whenever I sew! I've also tried felting my dog's fur, since she sheds so much (husky), but I have yet to dedicate the time to actually make something good out of it... I plan to make a miniature version of her when next try though.

I did try needle felting once. I used to work for a nationwide US craft chain and they had free demonstrations on Saturday mornings which became my gig because no one else wanted to do it. I was actually excited to find the needle felting kit in my monthly demo box. That lasted roughly 20 minutes into the two-hour demo. I have carpal tunnel and it really made my hands hurt even though I managed not to stab myself with the needle tool. At least I didn't have to spend my own money to find out. There is another kind of felting you might enjoy, though. Knit and crochet items can be felted if they're made of wool. They do shrink, however (which is the point) so practice on things like pillows and purses that you can just use at a smaller size. It's also called "boiled wool" and was a fashion thing in the 80s for jackets. Really. Warm. Jackets.

I think all first attempts go like this. My first attempt at crochet was just... chain stitches because none of the tutorials really gave me a good look at what the hands were doing slowly enough for my brain to register. It was actually your little leaf earrings that showed me how to do a single crochet, I'm on my second actual functional crocheted scarf. My first sewing project was a skirt I forgot to add a waist band to so I never wore it. My first cross stitch pieces has since been lost and I am forever grateful.

I have been doing it for years and it's much better than my first one lol. Just some tips.. 1. Dont cut it that will break the fibers 2. Make sure when stabbing that you only hold a corner to safe your fingers 3. It will never turn out good first try kinda like a first pancake type of thing 4. It should be firm like your palm to keep is shape 5. You will know if it is done by pulling on the loose bits. If they come off it I'd not done but if loose bist dont come off and it is smooth you are doing wonderfully. Good luck

I teach needlefelting to knitters, as a way to embellish items they have created. It’s a fuzzier and faster option to embroidery. I don’t really desire a wool figurine. One cool use for needlefelting is as a way to repair holes or discoloration on clothing. I have even seen it used on denim, though it needs a few extra steps when the wool goes on a non-wool (or animal fiber, anyway) surface. I added multicolored wool yarn to a commercial beret on this webpage... second photo. colorjoy.com/weblog/archives/2601
