I agree! Unless a wedding dress is just too far gone to save, it feels almost criminal to diminish them with alterations that will forever ruin them for their intended purpose. I can only speak from a man's point of view, of course, but for me, personally, there is something so special about these more modest gowns that evokes an aura of splendor and glory that the modern, more revealing dresses simply lack. Be they male or female, regardless of the designer or amount on the price tag, it only cheapens the wearer's appearance, when the body is overly revealed on public display for just anyone to see. I love that she is showing them, and hope that she will be an influence upon the younger generations to value these treasures when they find them!

I completely agree and think about this all the time. In fact my mom and I just bought huge panels of curtains yesterday because they have beautiful lace trim that can be attached to a jean jacket or extend the hem of a skirt or dress. Wedding dresses are incredible resources for materials, I am sad when they get dismantled though :( better than ending up in a landfill though.

@@thissideofthefirmament Don't feel bad. Better you give them another life in a different form. Some of these fabrics would make nice little feminine pillows, wedding ring pillow, add some of that lace, like you stated can be put on a variety of things. Also think nightwear. That one with pink redone and it would be nice as a pre wedding dress, to wear to a shower or a pre-wedding wedding dinner, lunch. That 20's style dress is fantastic, I would defiantly repurpose the fabric and lace and make a nice cocktail dress, even in that flapper style.Childrens wedding dresses ect. ect.

They are so beautiful. It is so sad that people destroy them for Halloween. That first dress fit you so great, and looked so beautiful on you. You could totally have taken off the skirt and the waistband, and lifted it to tea length, got rid of the train, colored it, and it would make a beautiful dress. Actually all of them, my mind was going through ways to change them up to be wearable dresses. I bought my daughter a dress for her birthday, she wanted to dress up in an antique dress. I found one in Value Village that fit her perfectly, it was from the 1950's. She enjoyed it so much, got pictures in it.

I used to sell bridal gowns all through the 80s and 90s. It was fun to revisit some of the dresses. I’m sure I sold someone. The second dress I don’t think the thread was intentionally discolored. I think somebody probably spilled champagne on the dress, and the organza wouldn’t soak it up but the threads would and overtime, the sugar would cause staining.

I liked the firs two dresses. I found a brand new white linen Monsoon dress suitable for a wedding some years ago in a thrift shop. It cost me £6. I was thrilled. @@ElledieWildAndFree I do believe expensive wedding dresses are a huge con. You now have the benefit of hindsight. I once read an article in a magazine showing 3 wedding budgets. One was something around £20,000, one was £5,000 and one was, would you believe, £50. The £50 budget included the dress from a thrift shop and the registrars fees. The reception was held in a garden and everyone was asked to bring a dish. The bride said she wanted to get married but didn't want to start her married life in debt. Actually there are lots of sizes of dresses. Let me explain two ways I choose dresses to try on. 1) I try to pick dresses that are from lots of different eras or dresses that are unique from the standard modern dresses of current culture. 2)While there are dresses that are gorgeous and sometimes even vintage, some are a larger size than my body could properly showcase for others to see its beauty. Do not be dismayed! Just try and look, you might find something awesome! If not at a thrift store definitely check out Poshmark or eBay. There are excellent alternatives to going to a retail shop!

Beauty is in the person wearing the dress and that's the most important thing. A beautiful soul can pull off a potato sack. 💕 In the months leading up to making these videos last year we had been watching a lot of say yes to the dress because my brother got married last Fall. I think say yes to the dress is becoming so overrated and is mostly just there for dramatic back stories to waste your time. I often found that the brides going dress shopping would ask for bling or for a classic style etc yet the consultants would keep bringing the most standard modern normal dresses and if the bride didn't like any of those they pull out a $20k pinina torne (however you spell that name) which looks like lingerie or a bad Halloween costume that didn't flatter the brides body or make the family happy and the consultants would be like, "dont you love it" and the bride just buys it because she hasnt found anything else interesting so she goes with what costs the most. I don't think the brides are even fulfilled with modern day dress styles...so it's no judgment on the brides, it's truly a judgment on the style industry. We have the most tools and access to the most supplies ever yet the dresses are so underwhelming compared to the craftsmanship of the dresses I can find at the thrift store from years gone by. So this video was just an outlet for pent up say yes to the dress opinions id been forming for months prior. Yes I do sometimes see beautiful dresses. Even the simplest dress can be beautiful. And I have seen unfortunate dresses that aren't flattering and I feel bad that that was the best the bride could find.

The home sewn pink and ivory prom dress, if you take off the huge ribbon flower corsage looking thing on the front, maybe update that with something smaller more in line with the pink rosebuds on the skirt, and give it a good steam, it would be good to go now. You see new gowns like that done with a vintage 50's look. I also think it would be nice a bridal gown for a small garden wedding or a reception dress for a larger wedding.

😱 where'd you buy it from before doing the alterations? Where did you get married? Why on earth did you donate your dress to a goodwill gurl?!

@thissideofthefirmament I was 19 years old and my mom's friend had it and sold it to me for $20. It was fashioned in the likeness of princess Diana's dress. It was made in the mid to late 80s and I bought it in 1993 in Boise, Idaho. I was also married in Boise. The marriage ended horribly so I got rid of the dress in 2003 at a thrift store in Boise. I'm absolutely shocked to see it here.. lol

For those who cannot afford to spend thousands on a wedding, this is a great idea.

If you sew, but have never altered a wedding dress, a pro trick is to take up the skirt at the waistline.
