I TURNED A FAMILY HEIRLOOM INTO AN ENGAGEMENT RING

One grandson wanted to use the ORIGINAL GOLD from his grandmas cross for an engagement ring. Two diamonds from the cross were used as accent stones, and I supplied the one carat LAB-GROWN DIAMOND for the center.
Have you ever wondered if you can re-purpose your old jewelry? This video shows a step by step example.

A lot of people are upset that the cross was destroyed (understandably so!) please know that the grandma wanted it melted down. She also saw this video and loved it. That doesn’t mean you have to agree with their choice, but I just wanted to share the backstory! Ultimately I let my clients decide what is best for their jewelry. Thank you so much for watching.

People do know that every piece of gold they’re wearing is made up of thousands of pieces of jewelry melted down over hundreds of years... right?? You see, I understand why some would be bothered by this video because that's a family heirloom: it's about not ruining a piece of history. But, as he pointed out in the comments, the cross would have been melted instead, so this is basically a rescue😅. Also, the final result is of top quality. I can understand, for example, if people get annoyed at old wedding dress begin "renovated" since fabric is not as "everlasting" as gems and gold. To understand what I mean I suggest you check this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGSxaJ-bbJqppas It's one of my favourite "period fashion" youtubers reacting to some quite old wedding dresses begin completely ruined by incompetent stylist in a TV show.

My now deceased friend Joe gave me, as a wedding gift, a pair of earrings and a pendant that belonged to his governess, a wonderful lady named Anni. She and her husband left Germany in the 1930's as the Third Reich came to power, they were so sorry to see what was going on in their country. But just before they left Anni's husband had bought her these earrings and pendant. Not only did I have Joe's blessing to reset the (European cut) stones in a band ring, I was honored to share the tale of this great lady who loved little Joe and raised him with such affection. So many diamond pieces have a backstory!!!

I work as a dental technician (I basically make fake teeth out of metall, porcelain or plastic) and watching you work is interesting because it is very similar to how I work with metals. We even have the same investmentcone and cylinder. The castingmachine I have even works the same way, even though it melts the metal with magnetism and has a hood - the process is the same idea. Also, I have a tiny little sandblaster instead of the tumbler but to similar results :) I've heard of some dental technicians gone proffesional goldsmiths, but most of us settle for making the occasional simple ring or pendant. (One of my co-workers found a dead wasp and cast it in a Co-Cr alloy - it didn't quite cast the wings but every leg and antenni looked perfect) I would probably still go to a real goldsmith for my engagementring ✨

Wow, what beautiful symbolism if one is a Christian. Maybe Grandma was, and the family wasn't, or maybe the opposite or all were. Either way, the love of Christ makes us something new and eternal, so what beautiful symbolism. Grandma in this situation was very generous and obviously loves her grandson and granddaughter in law. What a blessing that would be to receive the ring, to know your in-laws love you enough to give you something precious to them while thinking how it could perfectly suit you. Brava!

I'm guessing he would ask the client if they'd like to keep the excess gold (minus what he added in, unless they'd, for whatever reason, want to pay extra for that little extra as well so they could have the entire button), have something else made out of it or incorporating it, or he may keep it (if the client agrees, of course), and simply subtract the price of the leftover gold from his price for the work he's done in transforming one heirloom into a new one, but who knows, that's just my personal guess bc I wondered the same lol

Wow, to melt down an art nouveau piece to make a modern ring with a lab created stone, just wow ...there isn't much original art nouveau jewelry out there anymore (assuming that cross is an original piece, which it appears to be). Melting down such an exquisite vintage piece is painful and if the guy was going to destroy the piece why not just sell it (and use that money to pay for the ring)? Of course you are just doing what your client asked, but I would have advised an alternate route given that older piece of heirloom jewelry. I wonder what grandma would have said?

@jesskoko27
@jesskoko27 3 жыл бұрын
@@EyeLean5280 Of course there isn't anything "wrong" with lab grown diamonds. And it is one's preference whether to choose a lab grown stone or a natural one, I get that. But there are many reasons why lab grown diamonds are not the "same" as natural diamonds (and I am not talking molecular structure here) - lab grown diamonds have very little resale value for one. But there are so many other reasons why I would not purchase a lab grown diamond for my jewelry, and I realize my goals with my jewelry are not universal. To each her own. My comment above had to do with preserving a piece of antique jewelry and history, of which the style and workmanship are difficult to replicate today. And the cross most likely had natural diamonds in them, which is why a modern piece made from the gold using a lab created stone seems sacrilegious to me.

Fabulous creation. Here in the uk it would have to be hallmarked, do you have to send yours to be done as well.

The ring is stunning, but it's such a pity because the original cross was absolutely lovely!

Beautiful ring but a shame the cross had to be destroyed. Just hope they stay married!

Do you mind explaining what happens to the wax? How does the gold replace the wax in the cast?
@srkh8966
@srkh8966 2 жыл бұрын
The wax melts out of the cast, leaving the ring design hollow. When you pour liquid gold into the cast, it fills up the hollow design (like water into decorative ice cube molds). When it cools, you extract the now solid gold rings.

So so wonderful seeing it done there is so much work by hand that the average person can’t really comprehend. I’ve seen mass Chinese setting u can bend with your fingers pushing hard on a table I’ve bought items on e bay and actually trued to talk them out of selling it to me. Family history and all. I had one pr of incredible earrings 100-120 years old pd 55$ I asked if I could send her more u could tell there was so much tension in the thick wire hardly ever used and she said they came from Italy and a gift from an mother in-law to her great grandmother on their wedding I was buying a pr of YG cameo on heavy wire with carved roses I felt guilty so cheap so I offered more I was honored to have them No passed down items on my family’s side { was told no nonsense waste of money} any ways she said she Was sSo happy someone would love and take care of them Her grandchildren said and I quote why would we want any of that junk u got it all old really old Any ways had to tell u I make simple items I seen your supplier sticker on Machine. Rio I know Shannon in gems I buy my Swarovski from her I made monogram letters for cake tops I’ve been clearing out some of my tools and recycled bits to give away to be helpful there’s items I bought that I never used thought about sending to the charity rio helps in Africa. But how who u know at 60 it’s time to give it away to pass it on or a young person starting out I don’t know I love the recycling of your items. I’ve been looking for a cluster ring early 1900 Darla dee Woodward of. Michigan. Also classic cakes by Darla on f b I’d give away the Swarovski letters I couple pd almost 200$ for it I said take it back I’ll make u one for free I did dozens of them that’s how I meet Shannon in gems so so nice any ways any thing I’d be interested in I’ll give u let me know. D dee

As you grew older, the younger generations will inherit the jewelry with it's history. It may be with new look but the story will remain. As each generation will have a share of it's story passed down to generations
