I Turned my 1982 VW WESTFALIA Diesel Into an OFFICE | A Studio for Siren (Ep. 17)

In this episode, Siren cleans out her 1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia diesel camper van and turns it into an office space for her upcoming captains license course with Sea School. She deals with torn canvas, discovers a rats nest, and does some light decorating to get comfortable in this new space.

When will the van be ready for a surf trip? Any idea how you will store your boards yet?

When I lived in this bus, and even when I camped in it and traveled, I liked to put the boards through the middle on the inside at night because I slept up top, then in the day I'd take them out and put them under the bus so I could use the inside. Camping for a while, they just stayed under the bus. But parking lot camping and driving, there was loads of room on the inside, it's just not the most convenient thing. I hate the idea of putting holes no the top for racks, but it's not to say I wouldn't do it for a trip across the country. Around Florida, naaaa, I'd just keep putting them inside where they're safe anyway.

Yeaaah, I would have but I figured it was pretty well secured to that headliner, but that headliner is from 1982 and it’s almost like a felt fabric and when you touch it, it just turns into a fine dust. I’ll have to come back when I have more time and mask up and use a vacuum because it’s going to continue to be an issue. I’m think I can spray it down and kill the mildew and then hit it with a rag while vacuuming really close to it and that should help. It just immediately proved to be a project that I didn’t have time for in that moment. Lol.

how did cleaning with the mildew stain remover? Im in oregon and have the same issue.

That stuff works fantastic on other surfaces, but not this one because this is a headliner from 1982 and it’s soft and felt like and it just decentigrates when you touch it. But we use it on pretty much anything else.

But if you’re trying to figure out what to do, so are we. So because we need a new canvas around that too anyway, we plan to take the entire top off and just scrub it out with a hard brush and it should get most of that headliner off. If for any reason that doesn’t work, there’s always the option of going in with a little orbital sander and getting what’s left out and then even painting it if we need to. That’s the plan!

No, just the Starbrite products… they have a few good mold products. I think I’m going to pull that whole top off soon and sand it down, or at least scrub it down. I really don’t want to paint it. The bus is still in almost completely original condition. We will see!
