@@gemmawheelerI was so sure you were going to have to do an outside addition again, but then you didn’t! I think for any more usable space you’d have to dig! 😂 The only one of my favorite tiny house tricks you didn’t use was an elevator bed. Using some sort of hydraulic and/or crank system to haul the bed up into the loft space during the day, and down into the main space at night would be the only way I could live in something like this (I’m too old for lofts!). But that would require a lot of redesign, and it might ruin everything else. So impressed with this one!
@BettinaSchnerr5 ай бұрын
Count me in - I would have made any bet, that Gemma would add some extension. To bring so much storage into this space and how it was done in detail, is creative and shows how much we still can make with older properties. No need to tear all the buildings down for newer ones - but not necessarily better ones.

I always love your work Gemma, but was surprised you jumped right into the renovation this time. Usually you do a lovely few moments of your analysis of the light, layout, and other considerations that guided your design. I missed that so much this time. I hope you haven't decided to remove those elements permanently. I'd happily watch a longer video to have them. As always though, your design are thoughtful and lovely. Thank you!
@gemmawheeler5 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for that feedback. Those are still really important considerations that I use. Sometimes on spaces this small, the only analysis possible is on how I can use the space efficiently without disrupting the attractive features like the big windows and the fireplace. So that's why I jumped straight in by starting with using the height of the space. But there'll be more analytical projects in future, most likely when there's more space to play with.

Reminds me of the tiny homes showcased on 'Living Big in a Tiny House' though most of these are towable. Their ideals are similar - trying to get as much 'living' out of a small space as possible, doubling up on furniture usage - your guest bed from the bench seat was clever, Gemma - and of course, making use of every spare inch for storage. Your pull-down shelving from the rafters was genius.

Lovely design. When you started describing the building i thought you would add to it, but you miraculously made it work within the old one. Two cons however: 1. I really like hammocks, don't get me wrong, but you've got it hanging on the "hook" part of the railing. Railings always are stronger when straight, but to have the greatest weight on that single point, where the bend is & it's on its weakest, is asking for trouble imho. The ladder at least distributes the weight onto two points. 2. The bed in the vide. I've lived in one of these, i love them, but you don't have a "safety bar." Nothing to stop you rolling out of that bed during a terrible nightmare. I mean it's unlikely, but if it would happen, that would be a *big* fall. If you would put a straight railing above where it is now, that could double as a safety bar. You would just need two pins to hang up the ladder to the side & a single ring to hang the hammock on. No sagging bent railing & more safety. I wasn't aware of this type of bath & now i want one. And the "pull-down attic ladder type" cupboards is just ingenious!

In my home village in Scotland there was a lovely tiny cottage shop on the high street dating from the 17 th century, actually the oldest building in the village. They 'accidentally' tore it down for some unknown reason and there now stands an empty plot years later ! It used to me a china shop when I was a child, called Mrs Penny Farthing and was full of tea sets and tea pots sold by a very rickety old lady. Such a shame. Where my mother lives and where I attended school there was a tiny newsagent where as kids we would skip down to buy sweets. It has been empty for many years and when I last peaked in it still had it's tiny fireplace but the back was open to the elements which surprised me as there is a floating lease above it from the house next door !
