I don't know much about audio tech, but for the Rode I think the reason the ports are on both sides is the internals extend alternating, leading to a more compact module.

You prob didn’t break it probably a hook popped off either the dpi button or motherboard making it not function correctly it is a easy fix on the bottom take off the sticky pads and under them are screws unscrew them and look carefully to see if a hook has come off once your inside of it 😁

Addressing your comment on the audio interface forward facing ports: you have a different use case for sure but audio interfaces were originally for controlling speaker monitors and instrument input. Plugging in instruments from the from makes more sense but maybe they should come out with a gaming / streaming focused interface that has all ports in the rear! :)
