Is Glycolic Acid Good For Brown Skin or skin of color or even black skin? To answer that question best its important to understand Glycolic acid better and its effect on skin of color or brown indian skin.
A lot of questions came from the community about the safety of using glycolic acid on brown skin, or Indian skin or skin of color. My experiment with glycolic acid started a few years back in a doctors office and then in my home.
Some of the most popular AHAs in today’s skincare include lactic, glycolic, kojic and mandelic acid, among others. Salicylic acid, another common acid, is actually a beta hydroxy acid, delivering the same benefits as AHAs but in a gentler concentration. Today we’ll be focusing on one of the most common over-the-counter AHAs, glycolic acid.
WHAT IS GLYCOLIC ACID?
Glycolic acid is an AHA sourced from sugarcane, and is known for its anti-acne, anti-ageing and brightening benefits. It’s also the AHA with the smallest molecular size, letting it penetrate deep into the skin barrier to exfoliate and dissolve dead skin cells. For this reason, it’s also one of the strongest AHAs.
What does it do?
Glycolic acid is touted to be one of the best chemical exfoliators for acne-prone skin, since it penetrates deep into the skin layers and gets rid of acne-causing bacteria as well as dissolving excess oil formation. Glycolic acid also helps the skin barrier retain moisture, thus having a hydrating effect as compared to other anti-acne actives such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which may have dry skin as a side effect. Glycolic acid also boosts the skin’s collagen growth, thus providing anti-ageing effects as well.
What kind of products can I find it in?
You can find it in:
- Face washes
- Toners
- Lotions/creams
- Serums
- Peel pads

@@RubinaSkincare I have heard because of its smaller size glycolic acid can cause burns and as melanocites in darker skin tones are more easily triggered it's not advisable for it, is it true even if you wear sunscreen?, my mom's 50 and has really bad hyperpigmentation from a long time, I am planing for a routine for her already got her earth rytham advanced cell repar moisturizer for vitamin c and other benifits was thinking/ confused between mimimilist alpha arbutin with 3%pha tonner for exfoliation and demelan cream with kojic acid arbutin and glycolic acid for night treatment. will glycolic acid be safe for her or should I avoid it she has Normal to a bit dry skin, any suggestions? Bcz of all the fear around glycolic acid I was considering alpha arbutin with dr sheth's lactic acid peel but the demelan cream seems to have more potent formulation and is also very budget friendly whereas I wonder if only alpha arbutin and pha would work on so much pigmentation also she's never used any treatment before she also has frekels.( P.s since I am just a student it's difficult for me to afford super expensive products). Anyways thanks for the info, and I'd be really greatful if you could reply:).

I heard about this recently too and got a bit confused but nonetheless your video does a great job of busting all the myths. Thanks alot. Could you please make a video on good mineral based/physical sunscreens available in India in the affordable range. And also about the systemic absorption of the chemical filters used in chemical sunscreens, since there has been another trend of ditching the chemical sunscreens and shifting to the physical/mineral based recently. I believe the study regarding the chemical sunscreens no where states that those are unsafe but the chemical filters can accumulate in the bloodstream which has led to a lot of fear mongering. And since sunscreens are an essential in skincare we have to have options which are easily available in India and also affordable and those are mostly chemical sunscreens. And come on we can't ignore the fact that sunscreen reapplication is a lot easier with chemical sunscreens so it's very difficult to ditch them all together since we use it in greater quantities we have to have some affordable options. Also some Indian brands are quite shady and prove to be untrustworthy when it comes to sunscreens since there are no strict regulations about the ingredients used. Also this "all natural" fad makes things a lot more complicated and misleading. So it's a sincere request that you please make a detailed video regarding all these issues. It's such a joy to watch you because you are so passionate about skincare.

@@souravi1111 it might also be a barrier issue. if there is flaking then an acid is not a good choice. is the flaking every morning? stop everything and go back to simple moisturiser. give a week or so. if it does not stop meet a dermat...it could be just a surface issue with a slight fungal infection and is easily healed in a week. once theflaking stops then introduce products with a gap of week so you know if the skin is reacting to a particular product. niacinamide first, then do exfoliators- vitc is a mild exfoliator too...and then glycolic acid.

@@RubinaSkincare yes only around my mouth for most treatment based PRODUCTs. For other products I guess I figured , my skin doesn't like Niacinamide much, I don't have acne, but then most products dry out my outer mouth region. N just after two days, when I apply facial oil, squalane or occlusives, it just becomes normal! As a child I had severe dryness, around mouth, I mean couldn't open my lips wide in winter ,that's how parched it was, now it's fine, but a light pigmentation has left behind. But when I try apply spot treatment based PRODUCTs from TRANEXAMIC ACID, AARBUTIN, NIACINAMIDE... EVERYTHING dries out more. @@souravi1111 it could just be a factor of how our face is- there is less sebum around the mouth as also the skin is thinner. for most its not an issue but sometimes it can get to be an issue like in your case. if the doctor has checked it and cleared it for not having any skin issue then my advise would be to concentrate on barrier repair and preservation of that area and exfoliation. I feel our skin tolerates retinoids far better than exfoliators. Start with lower percentages and smaller amoutn. and Sunscreen. Keep it well hydrated and avoid licking the lips completely.

skin of color is toooo broad a term but that discussion for another day. Please do follow the advise of the person you trust only. All my experience in skincare has never lead me to believe that glycolic makes pigmentation worse and I trust the dermatologists who actually treat indian skin - no dermat I have met has ever said that glycolic is not good. So I suppose its a point of view since I have also not found any scientific study to show that glycolic creates more pigmentation. You should ask Dr V for the same- any view should alwys be substantiated with a study of some sort. I dont follow her so i cannot comment. Just so you know people with skin of color constitute a wide range of racial and ethnic groups-including Africans, African Americans, African Caribbeans, Chinese and Japanese, Native American Navajo Indians, and certain groups of fair-skinned persons (eg, Indians, Pakistanis, Arabs), and Hispanics. Thats half the world! So skincare companies are crazy to be making a product that half the world cannot consume! Your pigmentation could be for a number of reasons on which I cannot comment since I dont know the details. do pleas explore all of the possible easons instead of locking out a great ingredient like glycolic . Best :)

Hi Rubina! I used to loreal glycolic acid on my skin along with my moisturizer, I saw that my skin turned a little dark/dull. I used it thrice so far and on alternate days. Since I wfh, I did not use sunscreen in the morning. Is the darkness normal?

You must use a sunscreen especially when using GA. Even if you're working from home since it makes the skin more sensitive to sun. Also, I hope you're not using GA everyday.

If the acne marks are pitted even then it will help as it exfoliates..bringing new skin cells to the surface. Silicones act by increasing hydration and depressing the scars..its a function of silicones that helps depress scars so its good for hypertrophic scars or keloids kind.

@RubinaSkincare
@RubinaSkincare 3 жыл бұрын
sometimes knuckles tend to be darker than the rest of the hands. you can try using the actives that you use for your face like AA or vitc and see if it will lighten a bit. if you not using these then I would recommend using a retinoid lotion and then body cream. I cannot find any retinol lotions at this time.
