Interesting factoid for you. Abraham Lincoln was actually pretty racist with his attitude towards black people, something exceedingly par for the course back then. But he was such a devout constitutionalist he believed that with how the constitution was worded, there was no way he could reinterpret or misinterpret the document in such a way that even black people whom he wasn't actually overwhelmingly progressively fond of in his cultural attitudes towards were also garunteed rights and liberties. Not to mention the emancipation proclamation also served to somewhat force a 2 front war on the confederate south as they were having to deal with fighting the union and quash a home grown slave revolt/ guerilla warfare style uprising and rebellion within there own borders which plagues their wartime logistical chains... history sure is wild...
