I’ve Been Working On The Railway.. Making Kick-Switches To Complete The Sidings

If you have a railway then you need sidings too - for parking wagons and things when they're not being used. Mine happen to be in a polytunnel which doubles up as a drying shed when the wood chip wagons get parked in there. Getting the wagons onto the sidings, and then back on to the mainline later, means points - and points mean prizes, of course! My points are single-blade points - or, as I've learned to call them, kick-switches....

It wouldn't be a field railway without the plants. If it gets too overgrown there are plenty of animals around to graze it.

It continues to be hard for me to believe that the huge amount of time, money and ingenuity invested in this project will really pay itself off in charcoal. Perhaps I will be surprised. It is a lot of fun to watch, and I'm constantly impressed with the ingenuity on display.

the biggest justification to spend your money & time on a railway is how many goods will be transported via rails. (I think that's the real reason Tim showed off his garlic)

7:19 I think adding some flatbar steel horizontally on the top of tie where the point slides across may be a good idea. There looks to be some stress on that tie specifically. Chisel down into the wood so the steel is resting where it had been before on the tie. That way as well, over time, the point should always rest at the same height.

that sheep interlude was the highlight for me xD in other terms, for a sturdy bridge you could use fence posts and bolt the rails to them, or you could build a truss, like early railway bridges, depending on how much weight you want them to carry, and whether you want to be able to walk on them, for example

I like how this is a *working* railway for your actual usage. You need to go here or there and you just do it. As for your bridge, that will be trickier. Trestle or similar will be easy enough, but remember to include a walking path for you to move cars, and support it as your own weight will be off centre, so it may need the piles / supports be as wide as the track plus walkway.

Seven thousand garlic bulbs, a kiln, and a wood chipping machine to me suggests smoked garlic! You would of course need a bespoke smoking kiln, and a track leading from the garlic drying shed to the smokery. But just think of the value added per bulb ...
