Optolong L-eXtreme Filter Review: astrobackyard.com/optolong-l-...
Camera Specs:
• Sensor: Sony IMX571
• Sensor Size: APS-C
• Sensor Type: Back Illuminated (BSI)
• Pixel Size: 3.76um
• Color or Monochrome: Color
• Effective Pixels: 26 MP
• Effective Image Area: 6280 x 4210
• Full Well Capacity: 51ke (80ke in extended full well mode)
• A/D: Native 16-bit
• Computer Interface: USB3.0
• Built-In Image Buffer: 1GByte/2GByte DDR3 Memory
• Cooling: Dual Stage TEC cooler (-35C below ambient)
• Anti-Dew Heater: Yes
I am very happy with the QHY268C thus far. I was able to capture a respectable image (other than the spacing issues) my first night out.
Expect many more images with this camera in the future (follow me on Instagram for the latest).
It is SO nice to use a cooled astronomy camera with familiar sensor size (APS-C), that frames up some of my favorite DSO's just right with my 100mm refractor.
I'll continue testing the QHY268C over the coming months, using a variety of different filters.
Thanks for watching, and clear skies!

Use the sensor analysis in Sharp Cap. It'll show you where the sweet spot is vs noise. It typically won't be down at 0 gain; at that point background noise from the sensor is fairly significant.

Hi Trevor, very fantastic shot. Just for clarification, undersampling is condensing alot of image details in the same pixel. So, it happens over 2 arc minute/pixel. And over sampling happened in case of too small pixels or long focal length. In this case, over sampling is happened in less than 1 arc minute/pixel. Except in fantastic skies that has less than one arc minute atmospheric effect. Clear skies

Ive started dabbling into deep sky stuff. I have practiced with my 55-250 canon stm lens shooting the andromeda. Not great results with no filter under a bortle 6-7 sky. I may have over exposed a little, but i don't seem to get much detail. I really had to process and tease detail out with an end result hardly worth the effort (90 sec lights x 57, iso 1600). I was wondering if the redcat is really going to make that much difference vs my current lens. Or even if any apro telescope would be an improvement for that matter. Or would a filter be a better option? like a tri-band or something? I do not have a modified camera. I just want an decent improvement. if I can get 50% better result with a filter vs only a 25% better result with a lens/telescope, then id just go for a filter. I tried to learn as much as i can, but decent comparisons are hard to find. Thanks.

Its great Trev is getiing more people into the hobby! However, please check your expectations before getting into it. I know from experience as im a few months into the hobby myself. I was fairly disappointed when i first started, mainly because a lot of things like Prime Focus aren't talked about yet is basically the most important thing when you want to start taking pictures through your scope! Dont let it deter you tho! Just dont have expectations that your pictures will look like his(right off the bat at least). Its an extremely rewarding hobby and you cant beat spending the night under the stars with good music. Do a ton of research. For starters look up prime focus for each of the type of telescopes. Next check out the mounts, Alt Azu/EQ. Lastly dont forget to check out the article on AstroBackyard talking about a good beginner setup.

Hi Trevor, excellent videos that are very helpful to us aspiring Astrophotographers. I have the same new QHY268c and Optolong L-eXtreme filter. I just for a first time put the imaging train together using a ZWO filter drawer in front of the camera with spacing to get to the 55mm backfocus. My question, does it really matter in which way the Optolong filter is facing in the image train? For last night, I shot all night, have not looked at the results yet, but I was shooting through the filter in the oposite direction than you would normally have the filter positioned. Now I'm thinking I made a big mistake?

Trevor, this is going to sound like a really silly question but can you tell me what the specific model of headlamp you use is? I've been trying out different headlamps and haven't found one I like. But looking at Defiant headlamps I haven't come across yours. Guess its an older, discontinued model? I want a headlamp with a large red light area like you wear, but almost every one I've seen has tiny red/green/blue lamps that are of little use when I'm out at night.

Hello, Astrobackyard. I bougth a SW Espirit 100ED and an APEX reducer but I noticed a LOT of elongated stars and vinneting when using my 2.8MP sensor (an ATIK CCD) I felt dissappointed thinking it was an uncorrectable tilt but i heard you that this could be caused by an incorrect distance or backfocus between the sensor and the apex reducer? This cheers me up cause the star deformation was pretty bad, in most of the image and maybe i just need to adjust the backfocus a little bit.
