When the onions centre stalk has bent over on its side, then it's ready for harvest.

Thank you!! I’ll keep that in mind next time. Although with the weather that came I don’t think they could’ve lasted longer

You have to dig out around the bulb part for it to bulb out!

Truth, spooning the top layer of soil, just so the top of the bulb is showing.

these definitely look like brown "spring" onions. I grew these this year too. they are a variety that only develops a small bulb but you can use the whole plant, the bulb like a regular onion, and the tops as green onions. Enjoy! These look lovely 😍 Now just need to scale up and grow enough to feed you all year!👍😀💖 happy Gardening 🎉

Hi. It took me yrs to understand how to get big bulbs. Using starter/set bulbs. Build the top 3-4" of the soil with loose mulch, grass clippings, composted straw or hay. Water. Push the onion bulb in 3/4. As the soil settles and the bulb grows the top will receive good sunlight. Do not crowd, 4" spacing. At time of harvest 2/3-3/4 of bulb will be exposed. This is how to grow big onions. Live and learn. 🎯

Regrowing from food scraps will not create large onions. Those are nice. Dixondale farms sell bulb onion and start highly recommended. I had a fantastic bulbing onion harvest this year, oh, and they were planted way too close

Those look exactly like the onions I harvested 😪but still yummy

You can eat all of it. The top is like a scallion The bottom is an onion. Next time you plan onion you don't plan it that deep it needs to be half covered half showing. The bud like to be on top halfway down only the roofs at the bottom.

No expert, just experience. I’m curious to know if those were bulbing onions or the kind that are like spring onions or leeks. I grow my onions in fabric pots and they bulbed nice and the greenery was much smaller than yours. Also I would have let them die back if possible (kind of like you would do potatoes)

I’m glad you shared that information! I learned a lot!

Did you plant "onion sets" or green onions? Planting onions sets will yield head onions
@renslowcestdefinitivementpasmoАй бұрын
What are "onion sets"?
@lazaruslazuli6130Ай бұрын
@@renslowcestdefinitivementpasmo Pre-sprouted onion seeds. You are transplanting an already growing onion plant.
@brikhouse22Ай бұрын
I think they are too close together and you wait until the top dies back to pick them
@tashadiaz8661Ай бұрын
No more then the first three steams closest to base of onion need to dye back then Harvest don’t wait to long after because then your onion won’t store long
@lisaking7896Ай бұрын
Did you plant them in the fall? Like garlic?
@WindyCityPeachАй бұрын
No. In June.
@lisaking7896Ай бұрын
@WindyCityPeach onions shouldn't be planted during the summer. We planted outside when we planted our garlic. That way, it forces it into cold stratification and will come up in the spring.

They are too much in one pot. How I know is cause I'm in FFA (Future Farmers of America.
