You have to understand that when this game came out it was like the heavens opened up and a whole new existence was just created. Before these games most were 2D sidescrollers so this was legendary when it was released.

Before I even get to that part, I'm assuming it's the low poly model, which isn't actually a glitch at all. A lot of games do that to compromise for more environment polygons loading in. It's so the game doesn't slow down, which, of course, isn't really a problem on newer hardware. Now, it's just an interesting artifact.

This was delightful to watch! I played this as a kid and would just spend time being in Jolly Roger Bay/Dire Dire Docks just for the music sometimes. I was very much into sharks at the time (I wanted to be an ichthyologist), so I would frequently just float at the beginning of Dire Dire Docks where two sharks swam peacefully around me. Sometimes I would make Mario swim side-by-side with them, and it would make me so happy. ^_^ Anyway, thanks for checking this out, and I hope you enjoyed playing it, Seán! :D

ik this video is over a year old, but I came back to re-watch it for the pure joy it gives me. Only recently have I found out that my partner of ~4 years hasn't ever played Super Mario 64, nor Galaxy or Sunshine, much less any N64 game. I soon went into storage and dug out the N64 I had grown up with and the horde of games, untangling cords like there was no tomorrow. We got the console hooked up and I was ecstatic when the game cartridge still worked. It's been two weeks and we play a little bit daily after work and school, switching the controller when the other dies. It's been one of the best bonding moments we've had; sharing something that I grew up with in a happy manner. This game is so silly but I well know that it will never leave my heart.

Very excited to watch you play this! This was the first video game I ever played. I still have my Nintendo 64 and it still works perfectly. I will say, you're doing exceptionally well for your first time playing it. Every time I try to teach a friend, they fall off the edge constantly or get killed by one of the monsters. So, about Peach's name: she was *always* called Peach over in Japan, but before Mario 64 came out in the US she was called "Princess Toadstool". The same kind of thing happened with Bowser: he was called "King Koopa" in Japan, but he got the name Bowser from the English translation of the instruction manual for the original Super Mario Bros.

I can relate. Jail at 10 is a thing and people can’t acknowledge it. Being arrested for 10 minutes in your room and your ego revoked is one among the most traumatic events. I only remembered cause of my parents telling me the story. It is rare to consciously remember traumas such as this.

"Why does it kick me out of the level every time?" Because 20 years ago they couldn't load everything at once. When you select the star at the beginning of the level, it loads in that challenge.

@@jonathanlenertz5712 there were multiple stars available in every level, regardless of the challenge selected. But the main mini boss stars, or the ones not tied to a major level element (chain chomp for example) are only available when their star is selected at the world menu. Little ones like the red coins or ones that only require knowledge of the game mechanics are available in every load of the map.

I doubt you'll come back to see this Sean, but a lot of us want you to play more of this. I am one of the ones who grew up playing this game, I was 7 years old when I played this and I actually was so excited when I beat the final bowser boss. Now, you may be a lot older than 7 years old, but I know I for one and I'm sure many others want to see you beat it as well. It is worth finishing, so please come back to it! We'd love it.
