Well, after the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule, the only logical place to go next was space. What could possibly go wrong when Samus is there? I'm sure the Metroids will be happy to see us.
Thank you so much for watching! This was an ordeal to finish but I hope you all enjoy it! More videos sooner than this one, promise!

As you're discovering, the SNES was a blessed era in gaming. It had just enough power to finally unlock the full potential of genre defining games. Re the Metroid 2 boss, you can freeze her at the end of one of her lunges right before she hits you. This puts her at ground level, and you can spam 30+ missiles into her by stunlocking her. That's how I beat her back in the day.
@Guardison
@Guardison 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, never having an SNES really makes it clear how much I missed out on, and how much I still have to experience. As for the Queen boss, I realized I could do that, but by the time I could get her to that point in most fights I was so low on health that no matter how much I spammed I basically died the moment she unfroze 😔

the main complaint about super being the ammo selection, isn't as bad as you thought as there is a button (I forgot what it is by default as I always set it to select, but I think its like x or y or something) that sets you back to your standard beam, so instead of pressing 5 buttons to go from supers to regular missiles, you only need to press 2

Super Metroid has remained in my "Top-5 List" for nearly 30 years. It was a sincere honor to be able to experience this work of art while it was still selling for $50 to $60 in every toy-store across America. The franchise has had some highs and lows. Super Metroid however, remains a nearly perfect example of organic storytelling through pristine world-building...

1:12:46 there is actually a way to quickly switch back to a normal beam without pressing select like 5 times On a basic controller setting it is a Y button, it is called “item cancel” in controller settings, and well, it pretty much does what it sais Very useful, if I need to switch from super missal to a normal one, just cancel your item and press select ones Or to quickly switch back to normal beam from missals Good stuff! Hope this is helpful, and that there won’t be a phrase later down the video like: “And then I found out that you can just press one button!” Haha 😅

Everyone always says "I don't WANT to draw my own map", but has anyone actually tried it? I hadn't for a while, but then I decided to just for fun when playing the second quest in Zelda and... it really wasn't a big deal at all. It barely slowed down the pace, and the benefits far outweighed the... well, nonexistent negatives. I then tried it again with Metroid, and sure, I've played through the game before so I know where all the secrets are, but I still found myself appreciating the world in a whole new way after drawing out the layout of Zebes myself. It made it incredibly obvious where the infamous Norfair tile is since, as long as you've looked at the manual and know the entrance to Ridley's lair is further below, there's actually only two spots in the area that the path can be. It also made me finally understand the logic of the repeating rooms in Kraid's lair. The place is essentially just three shafts with the repeat rooms all stacked on top of each other in between them. Anyway, this isn't some sort of criticism towards you or anything. I've just found it interesting how many people say they refuse to do this despite seemingly never even giving it a shot.
@Guardison
@Guardison 5 ай бұрын
I tried it a bit when doing the Zelda video! (Wink wink plug plug) Admittedly while part of it came down to simply being to save time, another part of it felt like I wouldn't be able to properly convey some of the deeper aspects of the world. In theory it sounded fun and I really wanted to give it a shot, believe me I did, but when attempting to actually do it, it felt like I was going to spend time on something that would only end up making me more frustrated. I recently discovered a fanmade reimagining of NES Metroid called Metroid Planets that I thought was really fun. It adds a proper map screen and save system to the game, it rebalances item drops from enemies so they drop heals and missiles at a rate that's reasonable, it allows you to respawn with full health, it fixes pretty much all of the jank from NES Metroid without removing its charm (no more getting hit in room transitions, smoother character control, no more slowdown, etc.). It even adds multiplayer and a randomizer to the game. So if you want a more enjoyable way to revisit that game without playing Zero Mission, I think that's probably your best option?
@Guardison

That's not a bad suggestion, I might have to take a look into it! I was noticing that item drops were feast or famine with a lot of enemies and I wasn't sure if it was a fixed thing or not. I think the intention behind the NES Zelda games - to get players talking about and sharing their in-game findings - that is often cited in reviews of at least the first game can apply to "Metroid" as well. As a kid, I had an acquaintance with whom I tried to get ahead in "Metroid" over a few weeks. Lacking other friends who'd played this game, we couldn't get anywhere far into the game world, neither of us were creative enough to just bomb every floor tile and shoot every wall and ceiling tile. I don't think I would ever have found my way to Ridley without a map.

I just stumbled across this as a recommended video, and as a Metroid fan this was cool to see as opposed to a retrospective. If you’re still taking requests, I’m a huge fan of the classic final fantasy games. I know they are a time sync as RPGs, but the pixel remasters on switch and PS4 do have boosts (xp and money multipliers, turning off encounters). You should give them a try. Edit: If RPGs are too daunting, try the Mega Man games.

I'd absolutely love to do the final fantasy games eventually, but it's definitely a time commitment to get through them in a reasonable time! I'm sure I could split them up into single videos, maybe I'll see how much I have to say after playing the first one sooner or later. Mega Man's definitely on the short list of games for videos though, don't worry!

"but who reads the manual lol!" well you should because its a part of the game; the game came with the menual and youre expected to read it because they couldnt fit that kind of information in-game yet because of how limiting the NES was. in fact, even the doors you mentioned are explained in the manual. so anyway the map given to you isnt the one youd find online where it gives you locations of all the powerups and secrets, but just gives you a general idea of where you might be if you keep track of which rooms you went through

As a kid, I loved Metroid 1. And Super Metroid was amazing. that said, one thing I hate about the original Metroid game was that there's one spot needed to progress which requires infinate bomb jumping. And that technique is so inconsistent and finicky that you practically needed a Turbo controller.
@Guardison
@Guardison 4 ай бұрын
I got a little better at bomb jumping the more that I played but it's definitely not a skill that was ever really built up. That's kind of the problem with Metroid 1 overall is that there's a lot of things it expects you to know/do, without properly giving you the tools to learn/discover it. Not saying it needs to hold your hand of course, but thankfully the series would get much better at giving the player the tools they need to discover on their own.

Someone in the comments here told me recently that Metroid 1 was made pretty quickly, and largely with a dev team that hadn't made a game before, so I have to assume it was just an oversight sort of thing. I'm not here to correct you about the Space Pirates like other people did, just to comment that it says a lot about how, for all of its narrative focus on the space pirate base and fighting them off in the first game, there's legitimately only 3 individual space pirates you encounter in the entire game, and all of them are the main bosses you have to fight - to the extent that you didn't even realise the regular space pirates were, well, space pirates when you first encountered them in Super.
