It's funny. I had the same experience this weekend at a Local Lake. Cast to shore nothing. Cast around in deep water and started getting them. I'm think all the rain this year might have messed them up. Awesome vid as always.

If conditions are right, you can catch those deep suspenders on topwater. Guys have been doing it with spooks since before you or I were born. Mastering suspended fish used to be something that only a few select guys had a grasp on unless it was topwater With topwater it's easy peasy. See baitfish getting busted or seagulls in an area and get to catching if they happen to be larry bass.
