I lived in a hostel not as bad as a shelter, I was with my Mum and younger brothers for almost a year all together in one room. We where homeless. My Mother cried all the time not having a home for her kids. I’d just hug her. We had a cooked breakfast everyday which I loved. Though there are scary people around coming and going.. And constant feeling of tension and uncertainty. These are just short moments of time of discomfort that we will pass through. And learn from x

In Seattle I was unable to sleep in shelters due to the overflow of homelessness here. I also got out of school at 3 and worked till 9 so all beds were taken by the time I got there (I worked so I could make money to have a place to call my own.) I literally slept between three trees at a park at age 17 because not even my school could help me get help. The system was broken, I felt abandoned by my city that claimed to have a grip on this.

I spent 2 months in a shelter with my 2 young children (6&3 at the time). I was fortunate enough to get into a rapid rehousing program through the shelter and am now stable on my own. I lived in homeless shelters for a year. Some of my relatives don't know that. It's demeaning being told when to go to bed and having a curfew. Lots of crazy and smelly people. Someone tried to steal my shoes. One time someone stole my bus pass. I got sick from the food a couple of times. I slept on a mattress with no sheets once in the winter.

I've been in homeless shelters most of my life growing up and in different states and one things thats the same about all homeless shelters is that when you walk in the building it's a very sad depressing place the energy there kind of drags your soul down. No one likes having to ask someone for help or much less having to be put in a position like this as a kid. I remember making some really good friends and having to always stay by my mother since the old creepy men were staying in the same section as we were in. Now being an adult and a mother I couldn't have imagined what my mom went through dragging us from shelter to shelter so we wouldn't have to be sleeping outside. 💔 This video has brought back alot of depressing memories

I stayed in a shelter for a few months when I was 14-15. (I had my birthday there) and it was a pretty nice place. I didn’t necessarily get breakfast and lunch there and I shared a room with two other girls, but it good. I had a bed, a roof over my head, a people that cared if something happened to me. I didn’t know those people well but it was nice to feel cared about again.

Been in that situation before numerous times and what that jolly guy kept saying is so true ... I can remember sleeping many nights (well trying too) on concrete with my bag of everything I owe in my arms with one eye open. Horrible feeling. That 1st night in a shelter is always a relief. I thank God everyday I have a MY OWE roof over my head & a bed to sleep in every night .. because I remember those nights very vividly.

That's one big reason the homeless population continues to get bigger and worse. So many people have forgotten what it means to be a family let alone a community. Being a family means you take the good with the bad and you help your family or get them help if you can't do it yourself but you don't turn your back or dismiss family. Being a community involves being considerate to your neighbor. If all your willing to do is punish and say not in my back yard (nimbyism), which everyone says but the homeless have to exist somewhere, we will never get the problem under control. There is no way whatsoever that you can beat, dismiss, ignore, and hate this to make it better.

As someone who has been homeless i can tell you its sad that people only want to help once you lose everything and get to the point where you want to throw your hands up with no more drive left . it could be so easily helped before it gets to that point and would save alot of resources . At the end of the day it comes down to not giving up. So many do..... I pray that more people would pay attention to those they care about instead selfish decisions they will regret later.

During the last Recession in the 2000s due to everything that happened me and my mom lived in a shelter for a while. I was young I was in elementary school and I remember it being ok just going with what ever but I know that was only because I was young I was pretty oblivious to everything. One thing I remember from there was a father standing in front of the women’s restroom bc his daughter was taking a shower in there. Never really thought much of it when I was younger but now that I’m older I see why he would do that.

Tried to apply but was demeaned by a man who was part of the orientation he was mean, and didn't want to acknowledge me. They're a bit biased. But I'm glad they help the youth. Hi everyone! I wanted to share with ya part of my experience living on the streets. I'm Brazilian and my ex stepdad was from Temple-TX. He was a truck driver of a company situated in Atlanta-Georgia. I used to ride with him through the U.S while we were hookin up ourselves on "crystal meth". I got so tired of it that one day we ended up fighting over all this drug bullshit, so he left me alone at this highway near by chattanooga - TENNESSEE, it was about 1am and there was nobody around, dark sky, no post lights, only cars headlights passing by me. I didn't know that place, i didn't even know where i was. This police officer pulled over and asked me so many questions, the good thing was that he didn't noticed my brazilian accent because if he knew I was a foreigner he'd probably had called the homeland security and my life at that time would be ruined because they don't take so easy with the "latinos" specialy when they're ilegal immigrants. In my case it was diferent, i was legal with a green card so I showed him my ID from Jacksonville-Florida wich i used to live ever since I got in the U.S. He told me that he could only take me to this downtown homeless shelter so that's the begining of my story! I've stayed in this shelter for about 4 months. I was well treated by everyone who used to live there until I finally got a ticket to leave the country. I actualy learned so much with those guys, also heard every kinda sad and happy stories, It's been 10 years already since i left the U.S, I've been clean eversince and i'm sure that i don't wanna live in your country ever again. Sorry for the long text but seeing this video made me cry out like a baby. Goog luck, patience and peace to all those whos still living in a shelter, everythings gonna be alright , It ain't easy to be on the streets, trust me!

Most shelters nowadays are seperated out by gender (women, men, strictly lgbtq, children under 18, teenagers, disability, etc). Atleast in my region that's the case and many nonprofits and corporate donors put lots of money into the shelters and provide resources such as employment assistance, food, clothes, feminine products, etc.

As a child my mother, brother and I moved from one shelter to another for quite awhile. Often times we would also live in motels. We did get kicked out of a womens shelter once and we had to sleep in a friends car for a week 😂 I will say that if we had a single dad rather than a single mom we probably would have spent more time on the streets. Womens shelters are almost always nicer than mens shelters and they often have more resources available. We stayed a night on skid row, that may have been rock bottom lol Its whatever though, we all have difficulties in life.

1:28 "unsafe" the rest? "relief" "warmth" true... but unsafe...hoof... being homeless for nine months, yeah, some people *including staff* can definitely make you feel unsafe. better than OUTSIDE tho, cold nights when even they refused to keep me... all because I wasn't getting anywhere "quick enough" . . . like...some people legit just have bad times getting jobs and stuff...I wasn't even the only one. hell, sad part was the group of friends I gained from this, we were all targeted for this type of crap... well, just glad I have a place now with my brother, hope when we move its easier to get a job in the other state were going to... pandemic doesn't help either lol. when I think of being homeless, I always think now of the joke that people make about insensitive people saying "well why don't you just GET A JOB?" funny now honestly... you can't always just "get a job" like hell, I was told places like mcdonalds hired ANYONE... every place in the IMMEDIATE vicinity didn't take me for hire. so to those who have been through the same thing, your not the only one, and those who are still going through that, be it on a library PC, or someplace with free wifi and you got a phone to try and make getting jobs easier, etc, however you may be reading this... you'll get there... take it from me... I have a bit of luck on my side, but Im sure yall have more skills than I do, and work harder than me. wow the way I read that seems like I did fuck all...feels like it tho...really does... but yeah... if yall ever wonder how hard it can be homeless, sometimes you just can't get a job, no matter how good you try and look, smell, act... and no matter the programs you may be part of that supposedly help you with getting jobs... yah just can't catch a break. I also propose a sort of rules for anyone to remember if or WHEN *when as in, if you are losing a home, or going through stuff* you become homeless. find a shelter with churches around...you may not be religious, but the religious area's tend to be helpful, Kileen TX, has a few churches around that help with food, water, etc, generally just give meals. *dont know if the pandemic has effected that, hopefully not too badly* make friends, trust me, this...will help you with how you feel and stuff. avoid drama, and the people who make drama IF you can. trust me, this will be clear when you realize that there are always drama queens and kings. part two of the churches, ask around for places to eat, you'll find generally people have found places they can get food at for either SUPER cheap, or places that help homeless or those in need. - there used to be a house me and some friends went to in the morning, a couple elders made simple burritos with eggs, and had GREAT spicy salsa(not super spice, but great tasting) as well as koolaid with ice, was a great start to a morning. NEVER...judge people... people are in the same sitch as you.. some even more so worse, maybe even damaged... I made friends with someone who generally had my back, while he cut himself alot, he was a good friend... crude humor for the times we needed it, always was there for me when well, he could be lol. always knew how to have fun when it was wanted or needed. the cutting was...minimal, but obviously I worried. traveling... GET. A. RUCK. SACK. not a backpack, not a fanny pack, your carrying CLOTHES, HYGIENE SHYTE, POSSIBLE FOOD, POSSIBLE WATER! as well as some way to lock it, or tie it to yourself. a rucksack while many may say its bad for your back, it will save you for a lot of stuff. can also double as a seat. be paranoid but not TOO paranoid. not everyones great... but be paranoid enough... your closest stuff like ID's keep ON YOU at all times... seriously... phones ID's, SOCIALS, in a wallet, IN YOUR POCKET, maybe even a zipper pocket. when I say be paranoid, I don't mean too paranoid, just know that at some point, your stuff WILL be stolen... its up to you on how long that takes if possible HOPEFULY never. thats why I suggested a way to tie it to you, because if yah gotta be outside, its best for that. I had my shit stolen right next to me... anyone else got rules they'd love to add? maybe I made a mistake? add to it as a comment, someone might come across these and need it one day. I think we all can agree on that. maybe even share your OWN experiences being homeless, or stories you've heard. we all live on this rock together yall, stay safe, have fun when you can, and enjoy life best you can. while homeless lfie sucked...honestly... I miss parts of it...hanging out with people... walking from place to place, eating, laughing at us being stupid... going onto roof tops we...really shouldn't have... yeah. oh and one more thing...sometimes...you can take risks... I dont mean steal...no... theres always some place abandoned and not looked at...abando's they're named by us atleast where I was homeless... if you can get in one without getting caught, and stay warmer than normal if theres no shelters... sometimes its okay to take risks. preferably with people you trust that know how to so they can show you. I generally dont like doing things i shouldnt.. but god damn did I feel much safer and warmer than on cold concrete... "troubled young adults" man, they help when they know stuff you dont XD!

I just came outta shelters it’s not as bad as people make it seem but then again I was in a age a restricted shelter the the biggest thing you have to fear in the shelter is getting lazy caseworkers who aren’t trying to help you get housing.

I am not technically homeless nore do I have a home I basically live at a hotel and work for the Taco Bell down the street. This a common issue in Kansas City metro because all the affordable homes are in Missouri but all the jobs are in KC metro and if your car broke down and you can't afford to finance anything because you are paying for a hotel well your just scewed but glad your not outside 🙄. I tried driving Uber as a cheap way to rent a car but when a deer jolts out in front of you and you slam the breaks the customer will acuse you of being drunk!

the reality is that as the adult in the relationship, you have the power of choice, education and discipline. If you cant manage those three simple things, then thats on you. Not on the kid who never wanted you in their life in the first place. Most people have kids for selfish reasons. They dont actually care about the kid. because if they did, then when they made their own choice to become a parent, they fully accepted responsibility of whatever happens to them. They knew that it would be hard. I dont blame parents for thinking its hard, but dont you dare blame a child who you yourself raised. Their actions likely reflect on you, and no one else. Some people do indeed get into situations they didnt ask for. But be the adult and stop blaming children you raised for it. Apologize to your kids, accept accountability for what YOU did wrong. I guarantee you after studying child education for 4 years that they are not 100% to blame for their actions. Its not one partys fault but its especially not a growing childs fault. people dont develop a fully working frontal cortex until the age of 25. educate yourself before judging children and calling them brats like seriously. i dont understand why this happens

Not many understand how dangerous shelters are and how badly they can mess you up. Your in a lion's den of people who don't give a fuck about you and will take a advantage of you. It's always a risk. I walked out of the mission I was in and chose the cement because it's actually safer and you can take care of yourself on your own. It's rare to find a good safe mission. Yes food warmth but that's about it. I was in one at 18 year old. If you go to one just be wary and watch your back
