Peterborough has been voted amongst the Worst Places to live in the UK for many years now, this ancient cathedral city holds some of the highest crime statistics for any UK city. As we explored the city and residential areas of Peterborough including the notorious 'NO-GO' Zone and 'Red Light' area of Peterborough - Lincoln road, by day and night. I was Shocked to see so many abandoned places, Homelessness, Crime and Poverty on the streets of this UK City. #britain #uk #poverty #crime #england #reallife #Peterborough #nogozone #onthestreet #depression #homeless #abandonedplaces
Peterborough has been rocked by negative headlines for years, I headed to Peterborough to find out for myself whether the bleak reputation portrayed by the media was warranted... What I found truly shocked me, the crime rates where some of the highest in the UK. One area of Peterborough that I visited (Millfield Area) had 524 street level crimes (reported) last month! 206 of those were violent crimes...This notorious area of the UK is often labelled a NO-GO Zone by locals and journalists alike. I headed to this notorious crime ridden, red light district at night to gain a full understanding of how the people of Peterborough feel living in the Worst Place to live in the UK.
A quick google search of the Millfield area & Lincoln road in Peterborough will overwhelm you with negative headlines! The amount of crime, poverty and deprivation to be found in this small corner of the City is shocking. Peterborough City Centre is filled with beautiful medieval buildings however once you enter the outer areas of Peterborough the feeling quickly changes.
Thanks to ‪@BackpackerBen‬ for coming along and Local Timmy ‪@4KWalkz‬ for showing us around!

I used to live there for a couple of years. It’s bad. The street you were walking - groups of 6 (man/kids) just randomly stand outside the off license shops like hookers in Dam. No one respects the street signs and everybody just acts like in a zoo. Istanbul grill is the bomb though so you kinda get used to it. Never had a problem and I was always on my own.

I grew up in Peterborough before the immigration influx. Millfield and the Lincoln Rd area was always home to the Asian community which wasn’t that bad, until the Council / Housing associations decided to house Eastern Europeans there too. This is where the troubles come from. I have escaped PTown now but every time I go back it seems to have declined somewhat!

No. It's not immigration. It's your government. Do you people ever take accountability for your doings or do you just like to blindly blame immigrants for everything? It's ridiculous. Just because you don't like certain people colour doesn't mean they're responsible for the mess YOU created. Imagine being an 85% majority in your own country and then blame the 15% for the mess the country is in. Absolute delusion.

The nightclubs have been either shut down or burned down ( insurance job ) where I live. I go to Peterborough every now and then, usually as a busker, or for other music events or to catch a train to somewhere north. I’ve worked in the city centre late at night, attended events and workshops at Millfield Community Centre and walked from one end of the huge, dark station car park where it always sounds like there’s a nightingale singing after getting off a train late at night. Like every city it has its share of problems, but I’ve never felt threatened there any more than anywhere else.

Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. I bet its the same in whole europe, im from sweden and our town Oskarshamn were booming from the middle of 1800s to 1990s but then everything got abandoned, the only thing that is working here now is the Scania factory and SAFT battery factory, then just some stores, half the town is abandoned and depressing, me and my gf are moving to a village nearby because its too boring and depressing here, i dont want my kids to grow up in this shithole, its very important to have beautiful surroundings with nature, the industrial abandoned shit makes you so unhappy. And criminality is rising too, a disabled guy got robbed and brutaly murdered outside my work, i came to work just hours after he got murdered and i still can see that pool of blood in my mind, we have had many more murders around here, my neighbor got robbed 3 months ago and much more shit, The far right is rising in scandinavia too, i dont blame the people but our government havent done anything for years.

Normally Cathedral Cities are among the nicest in England. It’s no coincidence that the trashing of the city from the 60’s on coincided with the downward spiral. Town planners /architects in post war England and including our era , were /are a total failure, their lauded “brave new world” turned into a “Clockwork Orange” type dystopia.

But then got a bit silly, you walked through a council estate in the daytime, whats the problem?? Where there gains of yobs chasing you away? No did not see anyone. No different to any other estate. Then the road in the day, it has a subway on it and a co-op funeral directors! If the people working at these places, felt, 'so unsafe', they would not even be there. This road is 10 a penny in 50% of London. Spotter looking at you, I did not see him. Try pointing the camera forward as opposed to looking at your face. It's not that bad, yes there is a homeless and drug problem but what urban centre doesn't? I used to work in Millfield, regularly walked around there late at night/early hours of the morning, as I have done all over Peterborough, good areas and bad, never once had a problem, not there or anywhere. I still frequent Lincoln Road as some of my favourite takeaways are there. Side note, Millfield isn't an estate, it's an old neighbourhood that's had a massive influx of generations of immigrants over the years coming in and out of the area, people don't stay long, and landlords don't care about maintaining their properties, they just cram as many into HMO's as they can, so the area isn't cared about or maintained like a normal community.

I have the misfortune of living in Peterborough. Moved here in 1989 - it felt like a proper, bustling, affluent place with loads of decent pubs, clubs, no hassle, decent shopping, loads of businesses in town etc, much like most towns and cities back then. There has always been a foreign population, particularly Italian, Indian and Pakistani people with no underlying issues to speak of. We suffered huge volumes of immigration from all manner of countries, and with it the world’s problems. Criminal gangs, people on the fiddle, unemployed, homeless, compounded by a general breakdown in our own society with crap parenting and everything that goes with it. If you walk around the cycle path there is fly tipping everywhere, general litter. People don’t care for their properties. Flats and HMO’s everywhere. The city centre has been dying for years, compounded by COVID and now it’s just £1 shops, charity shops, takeaways, 2nd hand electrical shops, boarded buildings and doorways that house the homeless, alcoholic’s and drug takers. It reflects the majority of towns and cities across the country - I travel on business all over and it’s the same story with the same reasons. Country is lawless - political parties are complicit in the countries downfall. The end.

@johngoddard4459 Ah... The infamous “Crown to town” was attempted by many, achieved by few back in the day!!! (And anybody that made it to town was usually too wasted to get into any of the great clubs anyway 😂). I grew up in the area but moved away in my mid 20’s, 25 years ago. Peterborough was great back then. Fantastic shopping, buzzing nightlife, not to mention the Lido in the summer holidays!!! Crime was low, and we’d feel perfectly safe walking round the city centre as teenagers. I too go to visit family occasionally, and it’s so sad to see what Peterborough has become. Everybody local knows the reason for its demise, but I’ll let other people make there own conclusions. 😢

It went downhill massively after the Iraq war when immigrants were being put in rented accommodation and private landlords started cashing in big time and this was 2005. I lived in Whitsed Street from 92-06 and although it wasn't the greatest area, that street had a sense of community and everyone got on and the nags head pub at the end was a good old fashioned pub in the houses too. There were even the parents of a premier league footballer that lived down there who were lovely people, but within 2 years from 04-06 it all changed. Once the buy to let's started happening, those that had lived there for years, myself included, sold up and moved away. Such a shame but it's a lot worse now and the last time I drove down there was a couple of years ago to show my son the first house he lived in.

I used to work around there in the mid 1980's and it was deserted really, i still go around there for work purposes and its a different world now not British in anyway. Its the main area for immigrants so to see a white guy let alone 3 together is going to be very unusual so that would be why people are suspicious. I personally have never had any trouble and i don't feel in any danger when i'm around the area maybe i'm just naive? I have to say that during the so called pandemic and lockdowns Millfield never changed and that was the good part of it, whilst the rest of the city was in lockdown and in a state of paranoia, Millifeld was just normal, people out eating and drinking and nobody cared whch i liked. The rest of the city is more and more becoming like Millfield, a mix of mass immigration and "white flight" is turning the whole city into Millifeld and tbh as a white Brit i'm starting to feel like just another ethnic minority which is a strange feeling to say the least, i'm not patriotic at all i'm all for free movement around the world but the impact immigration is having here leaves you feeling no sense of belonging here, no sense of identity and an everyone for themselves kinda attitude. You get the feeling everyone is afraid of each other because there is so many different cultures and languages on the go. Peterborough in general is fast becoming non English speaking and sometimes it feels like the government and the council have decided this area is where they are to dump all the undesirables and asylum seekers etc... Every pub, every empty office block, bingo hall or house is being converted into flats for the latest wave of immigrants from Africa, Africans are everywhere at the moment... nothing wrong with Africans but its like there is nobody in charge of the numbers arriving. I have decided I will be taking my family away from here at some point in the near future because it just doesn't feel like a place with any future, it just feels like a ticking time bomb and i dont want to be here when it goes off. This is just my opinion thats all so any haters please respect my opinion as i do yours. And i'm not racist, my best mate is a rumanian gypsy ive known him and his family for years now and will be going to stay in rumania with him and his family next year, i also have a good mate from Africa who i could also go to stay with in Africa... immigration does open new doors eh and who knows maybe i'll become an immigrant myself soon.

You can't paint a full picture of a city if you don't actually explore the whole place. This is pretty biased as you only really went to the most deprived places in Peterborough. Why didn't you show places like our Theatres, the river Nene, Fletton Quays, Peterborough United, Ferrymeadows, Flag Fen, Charters, Brewery Tap, Longthorpe Tower, Thorpe Hall, the rowing lakes, Central Park, Hampton Beach and Gardens?? Why only show the worst places, you really don't get a true representation of a place if your only goal is just to go to the worst parts and show that. Everywhere especially city's in the UK have places like Lincoln Road and Milfield, yes they have problems around there but so does every place in the UK. As you rightly pointed out, our Cathedral is stunning, our city centre's architecture is rather nice, so at least there were a few positives. But next time you come to Peterborough please show the nice areas as most of the city is an alright place. It's really not as bad as you guy's are stating!

Peterborough is no different to any other place of the same size outside the south-east. Economically, a bit of levelling up would help. This hit squad that visited the city made things out as worse than they are, and forgot to visit the good things going on in the city (E.g., Peterborough United, the theatres, Ferry Meadows, the nice affordable housing, Etc.). And they weren’t attacked ,as I never have been, in the places they made out to be dangerous. This vid sets out shock when there really is nothing to be shocked about, certainly in comparison with other cities. Possibly, the hit squad are into drugs because certainly seem to be able to sniff then out. One thing about Peterborough, it is a heavily multicultural city and yet there is no interracial strife. Peterborough folk live and let live.

Peterborough and Lincoln Road was fine up until the 2000s (lived in Peterborough from 1974) Used to spend a lot of time down there in pubs, shops (anyone remember AnB records?), my brother was murdered on Rhubarb Bridge in 98 and i left Peterborough in 2012. My parents and sister still live there and so do my children and friends. When i go back like i do a few times a year, it just looks horrible in certain areas. One of the most bizarre incidents by the then council was when they housed Iraqi (iirc) immigrants in the Gladstone Strret area and there were riots because the locals in that area did not get on with that certain group. The council had no idea and just decided that is where they would be housed and meant houses were set on fire and there was trouble. The local paper reported on it all at the time.

UK urban decay can include the following aspects: Industrialisation Deindustrialization Gentrification Population decline or overpopulation Counterurbanization Economic restructuring Abandoned buildings or infrastructure High local unemployment Increased poverty Fragmented families Low overall living standards or quality of life Political disenfranchisement Crime (e.g., gang activity, corruption, and drug-related crime) Large and/or less regulated populations of urban wildlife (e.g., abandoned pets, feral animals, and semi-feral animals) Elevated levels of pollution (e.g., air pollution, noise pollution, water pollution, and light pollution) Desolate cityscape known as greyfield land or urban prairie. Since the 1970s and 1980s, UK urban decay has been a phenomenon associated with some towns, especially in many parts of the UK. Cities have experienced population flights to the suburbs and exurb commuter towns; often in the form of white flight. Another characteristic of urban decay is blight - the visual, psychological, and physical effects of living among empty lots, buildings, and condemned houses. UK urban decay is often the result of inter-related socio-economic issues, including urban planning decisions, economic deprivation of the local populace, the construction of freeways and railroad lines that bypass or run through the area, depopulation by suburbanisation of peripheral lands, real estate neighbourhood redlining, and immigration restrictions. During the Industrial revolution, many people moved from rural UK areas to cities for employment in the manufacturing industry, thus causing urban populations to boom. Subsequent economic change left many cities economically vulnerable. Studies such as the Urban Task Force (DETR 1999), the Urban White Paper (DETR 2000), and a study of Scottish cities (2003) hypothesise areas suffering from industrial decline, high unemployment, poverty, and a decaying physical environment (sometimes including contaminated land and obsolete infrastructure)-prove "highly resistant to improvement". Changes in transportation from public to private, (specifically the private motor car) eliminated some of the cities' public transport service advantages, e.g., fixed-route buses and trains. In particular, at the end of World War II, many political decisions favoured suburban development and encouraged suburbanisation through financial incentives like government supported loans and mortgage aid. This allowed many veterans of World War II and their families to afford comfortable single family housing in suburbs. The manufacturing industry has historically been a base for the prosperity of major cities. When these industries relocate to larger, less urban environments, some cities have experienced population loss with associated urban decay, and even riots. Cutbacks on police and fire services may result, while lobbying for government funded housing may increase. Increased city taxes encourage residents to move out. Libertarian economists argue that rent control contributes to urban blight by reducing new construction and investment in UK housing and discouraging maintenance. England civil society decay is not salvageable and irreversible, UK housing projects will cease, caravans and campers will be rapid all of the UK. The UK and Europe will also descend into anarchy or unprecedented civil unrest, street crime, drug imports and EU organised ganglands will become an epidemic and radical ideological terrorist attacks occurring daily by 2028=2030.

This city in the 90s was a good city full of clubs bars pubs and restaurants shops it’s really run down no shopping even in the main shopping Center of queens gate. The city it’s just run down to fuck hospital was built new was to small not enough beds to support 13 years ago and the influx of people to the city it’s crazy wait times the nice parks we have are full tents and drunks lots drug misuse and homeless people and they thought it was good to build a university here with no night life and nothing to do not a very big attraction for students lots millions wasted on the Hilton hotel it’s left as the money ran out the council have spent millions on new road work but it been pointless and unfortunately a wast of funds this city needs new MPs that will be there for Peterborough and its residents as there not. Been born here and lived on an off for 44 years it’s gone down to rock bottom and further down even more. Just demolish and start again I think 💭

@JoefishJ I live in spalding and visit Peterborough twice a week at least. Peterborough isn't as bad as painted and there are many far worse places. Lincoln Road has always , abdxI mean always been bad. 30 years ago Lincoln Road Peterborough was cited by Government as one of the five most impoverished roads /areas in England . [NOT UK]

It looks like most city’s in the UK which have taken Londons lead. Lincoln Road was okay and had many independent interesting shops. Queens gate and the surrounding area was nice as was the pedestrianised shopping area, in addition to the featured Cathedral walk. Nice pubs and hotels could and probably still can be found. The white Lion? Peterborough was one of the first towns to receive a large multiplex cinema, bowling and ice skating rink; among other things like large modern eateries. Kids from the surrounding areas would travel up to an hour to visit these places. There has always been a large Asian community but they contributed significantly to the area and worked normal jobs. Unigate was a large employer during the eighties but the area is known for large scale sugar beat production. I think it may be perhaps other more recent communities that have very different ideas about life that have spoilt the community. Or is it diversion of precious local community funds needed to carefully tackle immigrant integration successfully and to invest in the urban environment.
