4:15 The coffee shop and gift shop may be 2-3 years old but the restaurant, Cabbages & Condoms was opened at least a decade ago, maybe two. Khun Mechai, an ex government minister, is affectionately been known as “Mr. Condom” and was involved in family planning as early as the 1970s. Then the HIV scare happened so Khun Mechai has indirectly saved thousands of lives. The idea behind the restaurant's name is to make talking about condoms as ordinary as talking about cabbages; get rid of the embarrassment and hesitancy so that people would be more comfortable talking aout them and hopefully using them. The fun stuff you see in the restaurant is all part of that philosophy.

I went here about 15 years ago. I was told that the cafe/restaurant opened to educate people about safe sex. They have always given away free condoms, to encourage safe sex. I think it started when aides was a huge problem amongst the gay community. Anyway it was a good place to eat, and it was a good place to support, if you’re in Bangkok visit this place. I'm a light skinned blond hazel eyed American that is married to a Pakistani. I've never been offered free food as a guest in their country. I see KZbinrs all the time getting free food from middle east countries. Here is the thing, it's called a camera. When the camera is off this isn't the case. And it shouldn't be. They work hard to make a living to provide for their family. But not everything is as it seems and you shouldn't believe everything you see on video. I will be traveling for the 5th time to the middle east and plan to pay full price for the food. I'm often scammed and charged more because I'm American. It's annoying people think giving free food to foreigners is common. It's not unless you have a camera and large following.
