Brian Kerr is not just a Pat's legend, he's an Irish footballing legend too. Took his boyhood club Pat's from being a forgotten struggling club to the best team in Ireland on a shoestring budget. Then had huge success at Ireland underage level. Before a decent spell at the Irish senior side the Faroes. He quite literally lives for St Patrick's Athletic Football Club. What a man. Would love to see a feature on Pat's next time you're back in Dublin. A fascinating football club with its foundations in the local railway works and the heartbeat of a community that encompasses the Liberties, Inchicore, Bluebell, Drimnagh, Crumlin and much further afield.

I take it you're a Pat's fan? Long shot but I don't suppose you know a guy called Eddie Thompson? probably in his 50s or 60s now. He was a Pat's supporter from Inchicore, lived in Britain about 20 years ago, who I used to work with but lost touch. When Brian said that he managed St Patrick’s I was pretty skeptical like anyone would because it not everyday that some random man in the street tells you that he was a manager for a team like that so I did a little research on him and it surprised me as before he joined St Patrick’s he was the assistant manager of Drogheda United. After he got done coaching St Patrick’s, from 1997-2003 he coach Irelands U16, U18, and U20. Then from 2003-2005 he was the manager for Ireland. His last team that he managed was Faroe Islands from 2009-2011. Pretty remarkable career if you ask me!

It might be more difficult to get into some of the grounds in NI with it being the off season but there is a brilliant tour of Windsor Park (The National Stadium) you can do which includes entry to the National Football museum. The tour guides there are incredible and so passionate about their job, I would highly recommend it. I would also tweet some clubs in Belfast or wherever in Northern Ireland you want to go and I’m sure some of the groundsmen or club members would be more than happy to have you look around their ground, I know my club Glenavon who are based in Lurgan (30 mins from Belfast) usually leave their ground open to visitors.

Shelbourne's ground was formally the home of arguably Dublin's most famous football team DRUMCONDRA FC who played in TOLKA PARK until the early '7o's before going out of the league on the early 1970's which was a tragedy but are still playing as a good junior club.They played in distinctive colours of all yellow with two vertical red hoops on their jerseys and regularly played to crowds of 20,000 and up to 28,000 up to the late '60's.Shelbourne were originally from Dublin's south docklands in Ringsend and had a fine ground built there in the 1950's which succumbed ti inclement bad weather which affected the iron clad ground.After a nomadic existance playing on Greyhound stadia in Dublin they moved into Drumcondra's old ground.it is now set to be redeveloped after being saved from demolition thanks to their fans relentless determination.We await news on when the new development is to start.

Another weird fact. Given that you mentioned Bob Marley, Apparemtly, Dalymount was the venue for Bob Marlay's final ever outdoor gig. The club issued a replica Jersey with his image on it recently as a kind of collectors item.
@dontfeedthetroll2942 жыл бұрын
Yeah his last outdoor gig, and it was the day I was born. His last ever gig was in St Petersburg, I've a recording of it on cassette tape somewhere in my mothers. One of his best performances IMO, it's almost as if he knew it was his last and therefore have it his all and then some. Best versions of "Redemption Song" I've ever heard, for the bit where he says "won't you help to sing" all the crown started to join in. He has the crowd eating from the palm of his hand, only time I've ever witnessed something so beautiful in relation to music, was Freddie Mercury at Live Aid.

I was at that GAA match, can't believe you were walking about outside Croker! Shame I didn't see you because I'd a spare ticket.

Great video. Some of those stadiums do look a bit dilapidated showing the lack of money in the game. Great to meet Brian Kerr, who managed St Pats, Ireland and the Faroes at one stage. A real honour there.

Went to my first big game at Tolka Park. I think it was the summer of 1987 Home Farm v Liverpool, it was part of the deal that sent Ronnie Whelan to LFC. Great buzz around the place that night. I believe they are knocking it soon to build apartments, such a shame.

A bit like me. My first game was Liverpool v Shamrock Rovers friendly at Milltown in '82. Jim Beglin was playing for Rovers and I suspect the game was part of the transfer deal. Milltown is gone now too of course. Whelan signed for Liverpool in 1979 so your memory might be a bit foggy on the date?

Mate I swear I must have just missed you at some of these grounds. One of the best grounds was Richmond Park. Was there for the Pats-Shelbourne derby. Madness!

Drogheda Vs Dundalk on the 8th of July, it's a derby game about 40 minutes drive from Dublin city. It'll be a great atmosphere too!

I know it’s not a football stadium but if you are back in Dublin doing the Aviva tour I’d highly recommend trying to squeeze in a tour of Croke Park as well, has so much history to it on both a sporting and cultural level
