Hi Sue. I had been in the mortuary business and I can say this. The fluids and the stench are definitely coming from the crypts. I had seen it here in the USA but not nearly as much as in your video. I would assume they use mostly coffins and also alot were not embalmed. Even with embalming you can have coffin explosions if the mausoleum is not properly constructed. And by the looks of it with the age and size it wasn’t properly constructed. More goes into building than people think. Great video and thank you for taking us along !!

Caitlin Doughty from "Ask a Mortician" channel says it's all about "Drainage and vents" .. she even sings a song about drainage and vents. She is a brilliant advocate for natural burials, human composting (not like garbage), home funerals, unembalmed burials, etc and aquamation - which is the relatively new alternative to cremation that uses alkaline hydrolysis ( heated water ) to create the same product as cremains - or ashes - but is much more environmentally friendly. She has answered many of the questions people have about death, mortuary practices, and the various legal option we can choose when we pass away. She runs a not-for-profit mortuary, has written several books on death and dying, has toured the world to promote environmentally friendly end-of-life options, and I highly recommend her channel to anyone who is nearing the end of their life, or is close to someone who is - or if you're just interested in the processes of the mortuary sciences, human remains and different disposal methods. But she also covers much, much more - like mass human tragedies and natural disasters, and what becomes of the victims. She's incredibly likeable with a great sense of humour too! It will come for us all.

Having worked in the funeral service industry for over 20 years I can say there are structural issues that are beginning to fail in areas that are letting in water and damaging the structure. Casket failures can be common if there are spikes in temperature and improper ventilation Typically the crypts are designed to be at a slight angle to allow any fluids that might escape from a coffin or casket to drain back towards the rear where there are vents to allow a certain amount of air flow. Typically on caskets and coffins that are entombed are locked open where gases and air can circulate and allow the body to decompose and dry out versus completely sealing the casket or coffin and it can explode and cause a big headache of needing to pull out the casket and clean the crypt or install a casket tray liner to prevent leakage. Under ground mausoleums are a tricky situation there’s just a lot of issues to arise with ground water and just the wear and tear of the structure. I can see the area is likely not visited daily by staff with what looks to be some type of animal that’s going through there and defecting that’s just really disconcerting and disrespectful to they families that have loved ones interred there is be getting a pest control fellow out there to catch or put out something to get rid of these critters.
@SerenitySueGraveyards3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much. They got millions of euro a few years ago to clean ab restor this place, so what happened. Did they not complete it? There are still signs of casket failure from years ago. I know there is water also on the ground, but on some of the niches, you can see it. The fact that what I believe is fox excrement everywhere shows they don't do a walk through. They don't give the floor a sweep. It's very sad

When there are no doors and radiating smells, animals in the area will be attracted. Where animals go animals go. Oh I couldn't cope walking down there seeing the state of the place to visit my family. I mean they pay enough money to at least have the animal poo removed, sweets out etc

From what I've read online, they originally allowed wood coffins in the crypt, which weren't suitable for a crypt.

This is why cremation is the best option - no structures (crypts) that have to be maintained for eons into the future, no macabre mausoleums , no huge areas of real estate locked up for non productive purposes!

@@SerenitySueGraveyards Despite having said all that I am the same time eternally grateful for the fact that different civilizations have lavished so much time and effort in honoring and remembering the dead - without that no Egyptian pyramids, no Roman graves along the via Appia in Italy, no memorials in Westminster Abbey and no "Gray's elegy written in a country churchyard." Often the only thing we know about ancient civilizations i-are from their tombs. But probably for modern times enough is enough. Here in Australia they have opened up r the first cryogenics facility in the little town of Holbrook in NSW - for people who think they will be brought back to life in the future. I find these places the creepiest of the lot!

I remember when this happened in a mausoleum in Victoria Australia. Within the day it was closed and wasn't open for weeks untill it was completely fixed. It was so distressing for the families, it was soon found that many of the crypt occupants wernt in lead lined coffins. Which is a requirement by law. Even months later, despite the extremely heavy disinfecting and cleaning they did, the smell still lingered. It's one smell that is practically impossible to remove.

I just wouldn't even want to be put to rest in a place so disrespectful to the dead, the bodies are leaking out of there resting place. 😢 How many soul's in there are not at rest, and the 1,000's that don't know there way out. Places like this just doesn't sit right in my comfort zone, back in the 1800's the people that placed there loved one in there. I'm sure wouldn't have parted with there ££, Had they known what it was going to look like now. I'd rather be cast out to sea than lie amongst what I see, great 👍 job Sue love Tricia 🇬🇧 xx

The escaping liquid is rainwater, which penetrates through the ceiling of the building. Some of the deceased have been resting there for a hundred years. Which coffin is supposed to leak there.

There were several with the marks of casket failure. Yes, there is water on the ground, too, but that's not the ones you see it on the niche, coming from the above. They have spent 4.5 million on repairs, and it's online if you search it. Honestly, they have either not finished or only part was fixed. The flies (bluebottles) are a sure sign of something not right here.

But one question. Ummm....We got lots of em here in the U.S. (Michigan) and Canada. Are there racoons wild in Brussels?

These underground vaults are creepy yet sad due to the condition of some of the vaults. The little childrens photos touch my heart. There are many uncovered and empty vaults. Were the caskets with bodies removed and buried elsewhere due to problems with leakage? I've heard stories of such problems in this country in some cemetery vaults but probably rare since most are embalmed at well known funeral homes.
