Expensive knives tend to just get automatically prioritized in you mind. They just jump up to the level of your wallet and phone. If you're the type that looses their wallet or phone all the time. Yeah, you probably shouldn't buy an expensive knife.
@owlwithwhiplash8568 Жыл бұрын
That’s a really good point. My overpriced phone is as expensive as some of these premium knives I’ve lusted after but been too afraid of losing. I’ve never lost my phone. Maybe it’s time to get more premium with my knife edc…

Perfect analogy! My big fear is accidentally walking through airport security with a really expensive knife because I grab a knife while dressing in the same way that I grab my phone and wallet.

Another aspect of the expensive knife vs budget knife conundrum is picking the the right knife for the situation/circumstance. For example, if I go out for a nice steak dinner, I bring along one of nicer folders so I can cut my steak rather than saw it. OTOH, while deployed I carried a Strider SNG, though I usually had 1 or 2 "loaners" in my pack. I currently EDC a Wave+, a Pyrite, and a Milwaukee fastback. The point being, having different tools for different tasks with varying levels of quality/refinement will ultimately win the day rather than the single tool option.

Definitely resonate with this and feel like every collector has gone through it. At first carrying a $50-100 knife bothered me, and now most of my edc’s are at the $700+ mark. The worry of losing them I don’t think goes away, and even the less expensive knives I carry I worry about losing. Great vid MC! 👊🏻

The only knife that really bothered me after I had lost it was the first Boy Scout camp knife my father got me. It was similar to a Swiss Army knife with a jigged bone handle, bottle opener, can opener and an awl. I’ve never been able to find another one. It was made by Ka-Bar

I recently lost my Sebenza. I bought it over 20 years ago and was pretty bummed out to have lost it. Looked everywhere my buddy did as well. I thought I lost it in his truck, big guy sitting in the back seat of an extra cab GMC. Turned out it got hooked onto the PALS webbing on his pack. He never saw it there when he looked for the knife. I was way happier than I would have thought to see that knife again.

I enjoy your videos and you were one of the first pages that I started my hobby after watching. I have moderately expensive but nowhere near highly expensive . Regardless, enjoy the heck out of your page. I come from a different perspective from you, or maybe you cannot say because of KZbin, but I carry for both Utility and for safety. I also CCW and I treat my knives the same as my CCW item. Both are tools and both are important to me. When I get home the knife tool goes into one of two dedicated drawers. My CCW goes into one of two places depending on where I plan to be in the house. Regarding carrying in places that don’t want my knife, I try not to go. If I have no choice then I leave it in a lockbox safe I installed in my truck. Why? Well I don’t want to give a “tool” to a thief who routinely target vehicles because they know they can get “tools” to do nefarious things with. In my view carrying either tool is a responsibility and should be taken as such. Then, I tend to differ with you on places that Willy nilly decide to tell me not to carry. I’m sorry, I’m not going to go if I cannot bring my tool. I am that guy and damn proud of it because yes, freedom. I am not crazy about it but I most definitely vote with my wallet. If you’re against me having a tool then you don’t need my business. Love this video and I agree, someday I will buy a knife tool as expensive as my CCW or home tools, but when I do, I won’t leave it in a safe. I would be careful about the voices you use to represent folks like me who feel strongly about right to carry tools. I don’t want to see people get sideways with you because I don’t think you meant harm. Love your channel!

@jasonweeks6318 Жыл бұрын
I treat every knife from my $25 dollar ones to the ones I pay 50-100+ for like they are high end. Its about taking care of your stuff and being mindful that the lower end work horses, well some might not do as much as the thoroughbred models. I also don't try to use a knife as a prybar, a folder as a fixed blade ect. I use the appropriate tool for the job.

Ugh… I purchased a Benchmade Shootout, mostly for summer carry around the house and town with basketball/soccer shorts. Lost the damn thing within a month. I was soooo careful with it too. It’s ridiculous, but all my Benchmade knives are rarely used and in their little fabric bag, inside my safe. Fortunately, for me, I recently found Civivi that make great knives at a reasonable cost. The only Benchmade I’ll carry to work and often is the Griptilian. Coincidentally, it’s the least expensive “starter” Benchmade, but also my favorite to carry and use. I’ve purchased three of them in the last decade or so and only have one -the latest one I purchased.

I recently lost one of my lesser priced knives, a local dealer exclusive SBR, but found it weeks later outside in a place I’d walked over multiple times before looking for it. +1 for S35Vn corrosion resistance lol. But I think I’ve really only lost 3 knives and it was before I was collecting. A Buck 503 my dad gave me years ago, a smaller Spyderco (don’t recall the model) I gave for groomsmen gifts at my (1st 😂) wedding, and a Leek or Chive that someone before me lost and I found. The kicker is that if I’m remembering correctly, and I probably am, all of those were lost by a former employee.

I keep a dedicated tool, such as a titanium pry tool in my truck, and a utility blade such as an oknife otacle in my car at all times. Due to the humidity in Florida I’m always shocked how stuff rusts even inside a console. So I use stainless blades that I can have a few replacement blades in the truck too. Good for open packages or handing to someone who needs one. I keep my edc and a backup edc with me at all times too

My most expensive knife was a gift to me and I immediately turned into my EDC for like 6 months. Initially I was constantly checking my pocket even if I hadn't used it. Granted that was probably mostly because of the weigh difference (6.3oz vs 3.6oz). After not too long it was just used like any other knife I've had.

It always comes down to how much you value the item, which increases with the price tag and how much you like it, and then it's scaled by how clumsy and aloof a person is. I think I grew up too concerned about prolonging the duration I could use items like watches, knives, phones, tools, and whatever else for me to lose stuff regularly enough to not trust my ability to keep track of them. I've mostly carried knives under 40 bucks, and I don't think I've lost any knives except the $3 knives I had when I was 10 because I moved a dozen times and didn't care to prioritize them. Never lost my phone or wallet, and never lost a watch. It's not really about price to replace for me. I just don't like wasting the stuff. I've never broken a phone either. Some people don't like having to think ahead and take steps to protect these things, which is fair, but you'll probably "like" protecting your stuff more if you like the item itself more and spent more money on it.
@caryrosenthal7485 Жыл бұрын
A related thought experiment that you might ponder: what if you're mugged? I study and practice self defence and I cannot imagine using a knife, but that's not the first issue. Would your prized possession be used against you? I don't know but I surmise that a smaller, less aggressive blade might be more desirable in that situation.

For at least the last 20 years I've always had a pocket knife on me. Not for any "macho" reasons. I like knives, I like the mechanics of the cooler ones like Benchmades and Spydercos. And I love the utility of having something sharp in my pocket. I don't even use them daily, maybe a couple times a week. I open more cans of chew than anything with them. If I can't take it into an establishment I just leave it in the car. It'll be there when I get back, no big deal.

It brings back too many sad memories. My EDC for now is the Kershaw launch 6 ( autos are legal in GA.) $150 and I'd hate losing it but when it's misplaced, I take comfort knowing I have something else awesome unitl (hopefully) it shows back up. Bro I work in the metal fab/ power coating industry. I’m well aware of the mark up on production. The constant defending of some of these prices is kind of ridiculous. I know a certain amount of work goes into making these knives. But what they are charging sometimes is out of line. They are passing on the expense of however many people they have employed and shop expenses. By all means pay whatever you are comfortable with. But don’t act like people don’t have any idea of what goes on. It’s insulting and not realistic. Don’t get me wrong I know SOME of the material’s are costly. I’m not saying that at all. But I do understand what goes on.

Our knive carry laws are strict, but not every officer knows the ins and outs of the law, which are different in all countries, and can be different between cities in the same country... i have looked into what kind of knives are legal to carry, and abide by it. But i know that if an police officer deems it illegal for whatever reason (like looking tactical/ dangerous) during a random check, i will lose it with no hope of ever getting it back. Buy two: one for each pocket! 😌

Granted, the more someone spends, the more they should hopefully be cognizant of where their blade is. And, there are retractable lines that you could attach to those benighted lanyard holes! (I do want to get "beads" and lanyards for my knives, tho 😚)

Also, at this point, do you insure your collection?

My biggest fear with carrying an expensive, quality made custom knife would be having it confiscated by the police during a routine traffic stop. Even if the knife is legal to carry, if the officer has a bug up his ass about something, or is just a flat out prick, he (or she) can take that knife and make you jump through time consuming hoops to get it back; if you get it back at all. I had a friend in the late 70's who got into a beef with a cop when his wife called the police on him for basically being a loud and obnoxious asshole (which he could be on occasion). He made the mistake of also being loud and obnoxious with the cop, and as the officer was carting him out the door, his wife came running out of the house with my buddy's prized possession; a WWII German luger with four digit matching serial numbers, including the ones on the magazine which was rare. The fact that this gun had a four digit number indicated that it was an early production model, and likely belonged to a high ranking officer. She handed it to the cop saying she feared having it in the house. Anyway, my friend never did get that gun back. He was told that it "got lost in Property". Obviously someone in the Property Dept, or maybe even the arresting officer, really wanted that gun, and they got it. I can see the same sort of thing happening with a $2,000 knife.

living in europe, this is my biggest fear. our laws are strict, but not every officer knows the ins and outs of the law, which are different in all countries... i have looked into what kind of knives are legal to carry, and abide by it. But i know that if an police officer deems it illegal for whatever reason (like looking tactical/ dangerous) during a random check, i will lose it with no hope of ever getting it back. If im lucky they will only take it, if unlucky i will get a fine or even worse, get taking to the station...

The only knife I've permanently lost was also the most expensive knife I've purchased.

That really sucks. I’d be pissed at myself for a good long time over that. I would probably never quit wondering what the hell happened.

I used to loose sunglasses regularly... my solution was to buy an overpriced pair of brand name glasses. I still have the same pair after about 5 years. 😂
