Hello Miro, and CONGRATULATIONS on purchasing those absolutely stunning beauties! I am an avid orchid collector along with some houseplants, but orchids are my favorite genus. I'm looking forward to going on this journey with you with these vandas. I have the richostylist type, and they are growing well for me. I grow them bare root in clay pots. Best of growing to you with them . ❤

Beautiful! 💚 both of them … my personal favorite is the yellowish one! I am in Canada… and I have three vandas… the two smaller ones get dunked in rain water with the equivalent of rain mix (100 ppm) magnesium (20 ppm) and calcium (50 ppm) every day for an hour. The large one with a very large root system gets dunked in the same mixture every two days in winter. Humidity here is very low in winter and winter lasts well… forever! As I am writing this it is at 35% … I know… but, despite this and the very short days (no supplemental lights but they are in a sun room in a south large window) two of them are spiking and one finished blooming about 1 month ago… some vandals have beautiful fragrance… my denisoniae hybrid has a honey smell and vanda tessellata will be blooming for the first time is supposed to have a nice fragrance… 🤞🏻 good luck with yours!
@BasiePlants2 сағат бұрын
Oh okay, that is definitely more frequent than what I had in mind. The humidity in my room is 60-70% so that helps. It will get lower during summer, but not as low as 35%. I am lucky when it gets to 45-50%. That is as dry as it will get. So I guess I can think about soaking them every 2-3 days then :)

I am vacationing in Florida and went to an orchid festival just today! It was at an orchid grower. There were 2 very lathe green houses with vandas hanging from one end to the other! I love in Wisconsin so needless to say, I did not buy a Vanda. I did but a bulbophyllum and an epidendrum! Thank you for always entertaining me.

Im a bit intimidated by vandas. Afraid i dont have the best light indoors but outside i do, in the spring and summer but its get so cold in the winter. However if you like vandas... You gotta check out the miniature primary hybrids or the neofinetia falcattas. Theyre cooler growers the neofinetias but the minis can tolerate less light and less heat. Best wishes and im sure theyll do great! Youre an avid researcher and i value that, and so do the plants.

@LauraStansfield-tw7xb17 сағат бұрын
Thats the only downside of knowing what your flowers will looklike. Sometimes youre disappointed just because of expectation even if you otherwise would love it. Inthe future, you can ask for clone grown vandas and not seed grown so that you know exactly what you get.

I adore Vandas! I have 7 and they reward me so often with flowers, even in my murky grey uk climate. Never underestimate the amount of water they need , I killed my first one by following the ansu Vanda culture reccomendations. I haven’t killed another one since 🤣. I think I will pot my large ones soon, so I don’t have to water daily. But they are such wonderful plants, mine really are worth the cost. I want to collect mini Vandas
@BasiePlants2 сағат бұрын
How frequently do you water them? I now spray them 2x a day and will soak them once a week. Perhaps that is too infrequent? I also watched some other people's videos that grow orchids and they too water them once a week but some leave them to soak over night. I am not sure I am courageous enough for that! I could definitely up the watering to 2x a week and daily (heavy) spraying.

but it is encourgaing they do well for you in UK!

Loved the white/cream one. I have given up on orchids. I can never rebloom them; and don't appreciate their foliage enough to not have the flowers. I feel the same with hoya. If I can't bloom them they better have really unique foliage.
@dr.sreedevirao233917 сағат бұрын
Hi Miro. Congratulations! Don't worry about waiting and seeing whether you can manage orchids because Orchids are much more easier to maintain than Hoyas. Flowers are bigger too. Try native ones. You will love the cute flowers of the native orchids. Enjoy. Good Day

O Miro, they were so pretty and showy. Beautiful colouration and the roots .... incredible. Have a few orchids, they are about 15 years old at this point and flower twice a year. Hi, Miro, and congrats on your vanda beauties! Both are gorgeous. I definitely want a blue one (maybe 'China blue') and an orange one, but want to try myself with cheaper Phals and Paphs first. The ones in our big garden centers in Munich are 59-60 Euros at the moment and look way worse than yours, especially the roots. Also, if I give my money, I want to know what exactly I buy. No ID is an absolute show stopper for me, for any plants.
@BasiePlants14 сағат бұрын
I think I matched these well, but all Vandas in garden centers that are ANSU, I assume, are no ID. I think one can probably reach out to ANSU & they could tell the ID. There are a lot of purple ones so IDing those gets hard, to me a lot seem similar. But the white one was easy and some other colors would be easy too since there are only few :) These came to me fresh off the truck - so immediately I started taking (what I think is) good care of them. In garden centers, they are not going to spray them twice a day, soak them, put them under good lights, in decent humidity & good room temperature. They are probably a bit chilly & the light is crap. So, they can deteriorate quite fast. I see this happen with sooo many plants, where I get something from a flower store, and it looks great in my home, but when I return to the same place in 2-3 days, the rest of the batch from which I picked starts to look terrbile. :/ So, I'd recommend getting them ASAP - the more the stay in the garden center, the worse they will looks. It is the same with many other orchids too. I agree you should start with Phals - I don't talk about orchids a lot here, but I did have a semi big orchid collection, rebloomed almost all of them (with the exception of Rhychostylis), so I feel more confident with Vandas. :) But we will see!

@@BasiePlants I bought my first orchid 5 months ago by looks alone and it is a Dracula lotax. NOT for beginners! So I definitely need to be more choosy, hehe. I would only get an expensive orchid from an orchid nurcery, luckily enough there are plenty of them here in Germany. The dracula is doing pretty good and growing in my Milsbo, and I added 4 phalaenopsis, 2 paphiopedalums and an orange masdevalia recently. But vandas... not there yet.

Most orchids are not. I never had any issues with Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilums, Cymbidiums, Oncidiums, Cattleyas, Dendrobiums in the past but Vanda.... We hope these live! :D But you are right, most are easier than Hoya & the flowers are amazing and last a long time :)
