As with all older things, you have to understand social context of the show and what was going on. Cvedic would have started his activities prior to the "McCarthy period" but the show itself was fictional and just based on the character. There were in fact actual Soviet spies involved in these party offices that were infiltrated and there was a great deal of fear during the cold war, not just the espionage and sabotage aspects but also the call to overthrowing the government through revolution. I agree McCarthyism is a dark historical blight and freedom of speech is sacred. Our recent demonizing of alternate opinions from science to medicine to politics to religion are stark reminders of how quickly things can erode when the public is fearful.
