There's a lot of these parallels in the movie if you really sit and wonder. It starts with dragons being hunted. Now it starts with them hunting for trapped dragons. Hiccup finds Toothless. Toothless finds the Light Fury. Hiccup draws toothless. Toothless draws the light fury. Hiccup gave toothless flight for their blooming friendship and their goodbye; toothless took that and used it for his courtship. The hand to snoot and hand off snoot. And kinda a shot int he dark but also the end, where their friendship doesn't necessarily end, but their distance returns to far away (as originally toothless was never near hiccup due to being wild-then turned domestic) Its because of all these that the idea of "growing up" and/or "flying on your own" is better passed on in the film.

I honestly cannot remember a couple in any movie whose relationship had such an excellent build-up. Literally, we saw Hiccup had a crush on Astrid from the start but they were by no means close - heck, she would've been ashamed to call Hiccup so much as an acquaintance at that point. To go from that to seeing them married after three movies is no easy film-making achievement. But oh my Lord, they nailed it.

For the people in the comment section below talking about the theme of the story and how this third movie wasn’t as good, the theme of this movie was actually a brilliant way to close off the trilogy. This series is about friendship, the first movie was about even a perceived enemy being able to become a friend and ally, the second movie was about loyalty to your friends, and this last one is about learning to let go. Learning to let go is an often misunderstood theme of a story, the common perception is that it’s silly to build up friendships then tear them apart, but this is precisely what happens in real life. Throughout your life, no matter how strong your friendships were at some point, there has been bound to be friends who you’ve had to let go because of reasons like them moving away to somewhere else or in the story’s case, to start a family and focus on them. The story through Hiccup’s struggle to let go, is a reflection of our fleeting friendships throughout our lives. “A friend need not be kept within sight or within reach. A friend must be allowed the freedom to find and follow his own path. For if one is remembered by a friend, one is never truly gone.” - Grand Admiral Thrawn

Astrid knew she and Hiccup wasn't ready to get married especially when 1 of the viking rules is that the chief and chieftess must produce an heir after the wedding as tradition goes so who can blame astrid for wanting to enjoy life a bit more. Astrid learned throughout the film how to support Hiccup the way a wife supports her husband without even realising it then at the wedding she gave Hiccup a small nod to show him she is ready to be his wife. We can all learn from their relationship no its not perfect but they trust, love and believe in each other.

Shield Maiden was more like a title or role. Lagertha (1st wife of Ragnar Lothbrok) was an extremely famous shield maiden. The term Viking comes from Vikingr, old Norse for raider/pillager. Men had berserker (men taught to fight in a borderline suicidal manner), Drengar (Knight equivalent), and Skalds (warrior poets). Women were also called Valkyrjar (destined for Fólkvangr/Freyja's hall). Its were the term Valkyrie came from.

For those saying the third movie wasn't perfect it was. It's just the romance is more exciting when they don't clearly tell each other and it was much more simple in the beginning but that's how every movie or books goes. If they stay in one stage and theres no development it gets annoying but if they do develop it's like seeing what we wanted and so now we are satisfied so why do we need to stay and continue to watch or read? Not only that, but back to the simplicity part, the first movie was literally training dragons and friendship while the last one was finding the nest, more friendship, and a way to end it all on a good note but the simplicity of training the dragons was not seen as much. Its more of the honest truth and realisation within the 3rd movie.
