Your instinct is 100% right, don't doubt yourself. Unfortunately this treatment of women, including underage girls, is disturbingly normalized in Italy. I went there to visit my family recently and my younger cousin was talking in detail about how awful it is to be a woman there. It's wrong, and the law & police do not protect women & girls at all.
