I kinda like the original Star Wars space gun vibe but they didn't use AKs so i made mine a complete mutt. It's .223 with an East German barrel, then i picked various front dress that was close to but smaller than the barrel journal sizes so i turned the barrel to match. It has a gas block from an AMD65, a modified gas tube from a Saiga, a front sight from a Bulgarian AK74. The modified front trunnion and bolt carrier are also Bulgarian AK74 I think. I can't remember what the bolt is. The rear trunnion is Romy RPK since i used a 1.5mm flat. The top cover is smooth, no ribs, i forget where that is from. For furniture it has the handguard and pistol grips of an AMD 65 and a Penguin polymer stock (I think). One of these days I'll finish it and paint it in black stoving. So all black, no wood, just steel and polymer, looking like a weird cross between an AMG 65 and an AMD 63.

​@@ZzbulletheadzZit's not done yet but it's all smooth and cheese grater at the same time. The Saiga gas tube usually has a piece of steel wrapped over it instead of a upper handguard. I removed that piece so it shows the fluted part. That kind of goes with the stamped steel AMD 65 lower handguard but then the forward grip, pistol grip and polymer stock give it the pretty simple polymer furniture aesthetic while the smooth top cover and 1.5mm flat smooth out the action. Once it's monochromatic with the stoving it's going to blur the line between the polymer and steel but the configuration is going to force it to be a gun where you use the VFG because anywhere else you grab it will either get very hot, remove skin or both. Magazines will mostly be Zastava polymer .223 but maybe I'll look for some 20 round steel .223 mags for a tanker style look.

I think the problem is the rifle was never designed to work with this bolt hold open, so the hold open takes up just enough room to press the very top round against the bolt, making it difficult to seat. A way to tell if this is happening is if you load the mag with the bolt forward, and take the mag out, there's a dent on the top round from forcing it in. If you find a way to keep the bolt held back, then load the magazine, it should go in without issue. Or you can try loading one less round.

I have those mags and I had to load and reload them repeatedly before they wore in to the point where they go in easily. Just sit there at home with empty mags and keep inserting them into your AK until they fit right. It took me scores of repetitions per mag before they broke in

If you have a hard time getting the magazine to stay while reloading, try an “Iraqi Reload”. Due to the different qualities of the magazine’s follower/spring, there may not be room for the rounds to depress when loading a full magazine. To do an Iraqi Reload: 1) Pull the charging handle back 2) Insert fresh magazine 3) Drop the charging handle

Really like the look of that AK...has that worn in look. You probably see a lot of helicopters ...there is a Army National Guard helicopter training center south of your shooting location at Picacho peak off of I-10. I did some jump training at Pinal airfield way back in the 1980s. I recognise your shooting location...cool spot. Being a North Phoenix guy I did most of my shooting out by Lake Pleasant or Ben Avery Range.
