Regarding the name: AFAIK, Soyeon wanted the group to be called aideul, which means "children", but it is also very close to "aidol" ("idol"). They basically wanted to forever be like children, always in wonder, always exploring, never growing old, jaded and stuck in a rut. The whole concept was built around this Peter Pan image, and even the fandom was named Neverland. However, marketing stuck "(yeoja)" (meaning "female" or "girl") in front of it, probably because googling for "children" might not be the greatest thing ever. Now, in English, they made things more complex: I-DLE is pronounced as "idle", still sounds similar to "idol", also brings the feeling of carefree playfulness ("idle") that they wanted to go with; but also, -DLE parallels the Korean "-deul" plural suffix, while "I" can also be interpreted as the English first person pronoun, making the English name into "group of multiple individuals", each bringing something different to the table. The marketing kept the parentheses and put "G" in there, to stand for "girl". It was never meant to be pronounced, in Korean or English, but anyone but fans will inevitably read it as written. However, in Korean, while some people called them "yeoja aideul", AFAIK they never introduced themselves as anything but "aideul". In English they did both "idle" and "gee idle", though I think the latter more in resignation. :) Till the last comeback, when they googled "aideul" and their group came ahead of children. Yay, we made it, we can finally get rid of that "yeoja"/"G", they rejoiced. I still don't know if this is a publicity stunt for this comeback, whose title song is centered on rejection of gender stereotypes ("it's neither man or woman, just me, I-DLE"), or they are getting rid of the "yeoja"/"G" for good, but either way "aideul"/"idle" is a bit more correct than "yeoja aideul"/"gee idle" (and more so now than before).

yes apparently they had a much uglier name but then soyeon suggested idle but the company added the g/yeoja for the reasons you mentioned. but ever since around 2019, soyeon has been saying that they want to drop the g/yeoja once they became popular enough to be at the top of the searches. i still think in english they'll keep the g for a while longer though!

Thank you for the background! It makes sense now why the company was against their latest title track being "Nude" since people would Search for "Nude [children]" on the internet. Soyeon agreed to change the name to "Nxde" instead, but I know she said she was glad the Internet Searches for their music has reduced the number of XXX related searches since their song comes up instead.

All of the girls have a lot of input as well and participate in styling, music video concept. some of the members are also producers as well and 4/5 will have songwriting credits!

I don't know if you already did.. But I'd recommend you check out Uh-Oh by I-dle it's a, please correct me if I'm wrong, 90th hip-hop track. It was one of my Top-three I-dle songs before Lion, Oh My God and Tomboy. It's still an amazing song and I really enjoy listening to it!

Wow the ABDC reference! It was for the Rihanna challenge and they did s&m.
