There are lots of people suffering from mental illhealth issues unfortunately and some of them can be scary & even dangerous. That these people are unsupported is a whole issue in itself. I think it's a bit much though to expect a victim of theirs to have empathy for the person who scared them half to death. It's like expecting the person who has been hit over the head to suggest the paramedic treat their aggressor first. And that is assuming that the guy in question here even had a mental problem. He could have just been a violent thug.

Everyone has mental health; mental ill health is what you mean. There is a range of mental ill health too and sometimes that can cause psychotic and aggressive behaviour. I don't think that it means that others distress is invalid but the point about it being a failure in society to provide support is true. I worked on the Railways for many years, I was assaulted by a bloke with a knife though not actually stabbed, I was sent for a debrief with a departmental counselor who told me that told me that I should understand that the person who attacked and might have killed me should be understood as most likely having personal or mental issues and I should have empathy for him. After that I had many more incidents and refused counselling for every one of them, told all my mates as well , not to go near that office or have dealings with that person. Did me no good whatsoever.

I was in the vicinity of a sexual assault on a middle aged lady who was attacked by a huge man who was drinking and had been psyching himself to attack someone, in full view of everyone in the main train station in Edinburgh, in daylight. He was jumped on by about 10 policemen and a woman walked by and tried to stop the police from holding him down saying "what are they doing to that poor man". Tells you all you need to know about this mentality.

People have really gone stupid these days. There is nothing wrong with what you wrote Michelle. This man may indeed have a mental illness but that does not negate you feeling threatened and worried for your child's safety during that moment. The man's behaviour at that time would have seem "mad" and felt threating, especially with what has been going on in the world in the last two decades. That does not mean you don't have empathy and sympathies for people who have true mental illnesses. Watching her "rant" about health support or its absence has nothing to do with the horror and threat that existed at a particular time and place from the actions of a person whose behaviour fulfilled the term "madman".. I read a story in one of the nationals about how a schizophrenic patient barged into some random persons house and stabbed one man to death and then slit his throat. All in front of a child. I think it was in Derby if I remember correctly. And all because he forgot to take his pills. You are 100% right, it is a joke.

If someone's actions can be explained away so readily, someone else's vocabulary to describe those actions gets a free pass, surely? Go back far enough and we can explain away any crime, from shoplifting to genocide. That doesn't mean the explanation holds weight.
