I Was Really Scared: How a Kayak Adventure Changed My Life | Outer Banks NC (van life)

My kayak adventure story that I'm so excited to share with you my story about overcoming fear. It's a really powerful thing, and I hope it changes your life in the same way it changed mine. You might be thinking that this is going to be some long motivational speech or something like that, but I promise you that it's not. My goal here is just to show you how a kayak adventure helped me overcome some of my fears and allowed me to learn of a new activity that makes me really happy. Thank you Joe and Andrea from Coastal Kayak in Duck, North Carolina (in the Outer Banks) for helping me to realize this dream. I'm a kayak beginner - I had never kayaked before this and was pretty nervous to try kayaking. I did make sure I too a kayak tour that was in fairly calm waters from the sea since I am a beginner. I've been traveling in my van for such a long time and have had the opportunity to kayak many times, but I struggled with my fear of it. I have various fears related to kayaking which you'll see in the kayak vlog video. Oh, and I got stuck in the mud.

Hi, I'm Amber and in May 2017 I started full time RV living. I started this nomadic journey after selling my house and all my belongings to pursue this crazy dream of traveling full time in an RV and creating incredible memories.
After 1 year of traveling, I sold my 26 foot Winnebago Class C RV for a more nimble Class B van on a Promaster 2500 chassis. Now in my 4th year of RVing in my camper van, I'm still loving this RV lifestyle and being a digital nomad. I almost always boondock in nature and really enjoy that off grid living.

Continually impressed with your adventurous spirit! I think turning 50 is liberating in a way. It gives you a sense of time and causes you to want to fit as much life into every minute you can! I have had so many adventures that I never thought I would in the last 5 years! My next will be facing my fear of heights in a hot air balloon over Lake Tahoe! I can’t wait!! @@storychasing I’ve been in the river and in the sound. I haven’t been in the Gulf yet. Paddle boarding in the same waters and around the keys. Love it. Sting rays slapping the top of the water. Love it. We have sit in and sit on kayaks.

Kudos to you, Amber, for overcoming your fear. I made the mistake of doing my first-ever kayaking in St. Lucia where we were out on open water, there was a tropical storm coming our way over the next day or so, the water was VERY choppy, our guide was waaaaay ahead (probably about 500 yards) so I couldn't call for help when a wave capsized me and my kayak (these kayaks had foot pedals and my foot pedals, as it turned out, were defective) and rolled me about five yards below the surface of the sea. It was only by a stroke of luck that someone in our group noticed I was missing. My legs are strong but I didn't have the upper body strength to haul my body back into the kayak (plus I was getting pummeled by waves). Long story short, it was the scariest experience of my life (I have a fear of drowning ever since).

@@storychasing I truly don't know if I'll try kayaking again. I'm one of those people who think, "If I do this, can it kill me?" (99% of the time the answer is No and I try whatever it is I'm questioning trying). In this case the answer is Yes (I can "this close" to drowning). IF I were to try it again, I would make sure the guide is within earshot (or at least I'd carry a whistle) and it would be NOT on the sea, maybe a calm lake out in BC or Alberta ☺

@@franciesjoy1269 I was the second person in our small group to capsize. Since I couldn't pull myself back into the kayak as the waves pummeled me, I had to swim to shore with one arm, whilst holding onto the kayak with the other arm. Good thing I'm a strong swimmer. They had to bring speed boats to the two of us who got capsized and made it to shore.

So glad you're enjoying some of our beautiful beaches in North Carolina. The Outer Banks are a wonderful place to explore. Explore Hatteras Lighthouse while you're there. Atlantic Breach has Fort Macon which would be a great place to see. Emerald Isle has a few good restaurants.. One being Port of Call. Have the best time of your life while you're here. We have beautiful beaches and beautiful mountains. Maybe you can explore Grandfather Mountain while here. All the best Tina.

I have been looking to kayak, but like you and for the same reason, I've not done it. I'm going to make taking a tour on my to do list. You should see the river kayakers in the Western NC Mountains. It’s unbelievable in that cold, fast water when they tip over and manage to flip right back over. It take a lot of training for that type of kayaking. I’m so glad you had a great experience!

When you come back to Fl you have to kayak…so many great places. There are a lot of rivers in the central Florida part that you missed in the Ocala National Forest.

@@diriazi they don’t bother you, just don’t kayak near the shore or grassy areas especially during nesting season.

My chihuahua loved to sunbathe and he would close his eyes like that, because of the bright sun, but also because of the enjoyment of the heat on his body. He used to love to lay out on the patio and soak up the heat. If your dog was hot she would be panting. It looks to me like she was just enjoying the sun. Kayaks are fairly inexpensive. The hard part is finding a place to put them on/in your van. Loading and unloading them can be a chore, because of their weight, but once on the water they're awesome fun.

Make sure you try the sit on, kayak, the ocean or sit in kayaks are harder to get in and out of. They weigh about as much as your bike or more. It’s so much fun.

Kayaks are awesome and can get you to so many places. Lots to consider if you plan to get one so do your research, then once you settle on the ones you would consider I would really look used. Really watch the weight and consider how you plan to transport it. Enjoy the road and stay safe.

I bow to you in admiration! I have worked and lived on boats my whole life. I even managed two whale watching companies where I constantly went out on zodiac tours! Canoes, no problem, but kayaks scare the bajeezus out of me. Something about the thought of rolling and not being able to get my legs out is absolutely terrifying to me. So, while I'm really proud of you for facing your fears, I'm going to let you take this one and I'll live vicariously through you🥰❤🚙🇨🇦 (And judging by Lily's face, she agrees with me🤣🤣)

I went kayaking first time in Sarasota bay. My main fear was my weight. I even emailed to ask what the weight limit was. Very embarrassing, but if I tipped there is no way I could get back in. But I did it and loved it.

I love to kayak! although here in Iowa we have lot of quiet no-wake lakes. I have an inflatable kayak and I love to float along the lily pads and turtles....
