You're so right, the permission to share the access to your page should be reversible. It should be impossible to easily gain full access to someone else's page, and block the actual owner, the way it was possible with your page. Makes no sense. Should be a little more difficult than that. But they don't care about safety it seems
@starsandmoonsabove7 ай бұрын
@@Dimpdis818 that's victim blaming. We're talking about the fact that it was too easy to give away full access. It should be reversible. You should be able to allow and then take back access to your page. what you're saying is not helpful to anybody except scammers and corporations like fb who don't care about the safety of their users. Yiuu know how you can block your banking card if it gets stolen? Something like that should be possible where we can at least block the page if it gets hacked or taken over the way it did in this case. Are you a conservative or a centrist by any chance? I'm confused by your opinion.
@MorganChaos7 ай бұрын
@@starsandmoonsabove I kind of agree with both of you -- I do think it should be harder to fall for this kind of thing, but I don't think it's victim blaming to say that making such a change reversible in every single instance would just create more problems. I've been in situations where people handed over this kind of permission for legitimate, agreed-on reasons and you wouldn't want them to be able to take it back at will (e.g. someone agreeing to give up ownership of a discord server because the owner is a toxic presence in the community). I think the best thing would be a warning in clear language that mentions scams. Like at the top in bold, "Read this entire warning. If someone is telling you to just scroll past it, they are scamming you." And then the warning explains exactly how powerful this permission is and explains that it's possible you can get locked out of your account by giving it, so only give it to someone you trust. This would at least put a barrier in place that would get most people to realize "this doesn't do what this person is telling me it does, so I should stop and get more information." (Of course, as someone else pointed out, Facebook probably makes more money on the hacked pages so they're never going to fix it.)

I feel like part of it is diffused knowledge versus specialized. Someone with a following has to know the basics of five to ten different platforms, running around with a bunch of tools they mostly know how to use, but not how to fix or break. Someone who focuses on backend, like a software dev, will know the structure of sites and where their security loopholes are, will know how to make and break these tools, but won't have the time or know-how to make a profit or presence on those platforms. Doing both is probably possible, but exhausting, and an uncommon convergence of interests besides. All that said, I do feel like at this point, any group claiming to do social media management should probably consider putting a cybersecurity or software expert on their payroll to consult on things like this. It probably wouldn't prevent every scam, but presumably it would at least hinder a lot of them...

I think we are moving towards the era where public social media is dying. A lot of creators and just people who want to connect with people are moving away from traditional social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc. and going to social media sites that require you to know someone to join like discord. My use of social media has always been limited but from what I hear from my friends is that they mostly use apps like discord to get the engagement that previously social media apps give them. One reason why I think a lot of people are moving towards private groups for social media is because it requires more effort to join, you know everyone you are talking to has similar interests to you, and it is way easier to remove not accounts from one of these private networks than a traditional social media website. Now with the push by social media websites to sanitize their pages, I wonder if creators will start posting more of their content to these private groups. For example, I know a lot of KZbinrs are adding a free tier to their Patron so that some of their videos that KZbin does not want people to see can be seen. To me, it is a matter of being able to control your accounts and get rid of bots from your community that are causing this push to more private group social media.

The self-sabotage behavior is literally me, too. It’s a hard thing to overcome, and it’s even worse when you finally decide to go for it, and it doesn’t work out or turns out to *actually* be manipulative or ingenuine, and then you go “see I was right” and tighten your fortress a bit more. I feel you ❤

I am so sorry this happened to you. Facebook was pretty spammy when I left as a New Years Resolution in 2018. I can see it getting worse. I found social media in general dystopian so I have avoided all the platforms. The platforms just don't care. They're very ghoulish in that way. I hope they resolve this for you.

The first part about hearing you getting much more pleasure and connection and safety whilw doing IRL stuff feels like such a 'paying it forward' moment. I discovered you 10 years ago, still sticking around for what's to come and the gradual shift and evolution you've made not just from having a platform, but seeing people reach out from their points of discovering you and going forward with a positive experience of opening so many horizons ❤

First, I’m sorry that happened to you. That had to be incredibly frustrating, and scary. It’s terrifying to think about someone you don’t know putting whatever they want into the world and thousands of people believing it’s coming from you. That said, I’d think you’d be more sensitive to putting out content that’s misleading. Not only is the title of this video clickbait, you don’t reveal that it was hackers who scammed you and not Travis Kelce until the video is more than half through. I’m surprised to have scrolled through several comments without having read one person point this irony out. Perhaps negative comments are being deleted… who knows. I guess we can all agree you can’t believe anything you come across on social media anymore.

THAT'S what Dead Internet Theory is? Someone tried to explain this to me a couple years ago and they did such a bad job at explaining it that I just rolled my eyes every time I heard the term after that. They were like "you know how the internet is all ads now?" and I'm like "yeah" and they're like "that's dead internet theory." And I'm like "The internet had been mostly ads since X10, you aren't exactly breaking any new ground with this theory." Then he got mad at me and wouldn't explain it any further. Either way, i am so sorry this all happened to you. I too have been kinda tossing up my hands in frustration with what to do with myself online. Facebook has been choking my engagement ever since it flagged some punk lyrics I posted in a thread about punk lyrics as "hate speech", and it feels like no one sees me no more. I feel like we lost as soon as we lost net neutrality all those years ago. Now they wanna ban TikTok in the states. This internet ain't ours no more.

The lack of customer support on sites like Facebook and KZbin is absolutely ENRAGING. I had a KZbin channel that was deleted with no notice. I asked why and never heard anything back, then after pushing it for years I finally got the response that I "violated community standards." I asked what I did and never got a response. Still no idea why it happened and I lost everything I created

I genuinely think building offline community is something we need to go back to doing. Online community is important. I'm a queer disabled person living rurally, I rely on online communities. But in person will always be healthier and more productive and since most people don't live out in the stix, more effort should be put back into in person community efforts. Hell, even us rural folk have community groups where people meet up. Less frequently, fewer people and limited topics... But we have them

Who the fuck is still on Facebook: Why the hell are concerts still set up on Facebook even? I mean, it's still better than stories on Instagram with its calendar and invite features for such a cause, but it would so great if there was an independent website where everyone congregates so i can finally leave that shithole .... i've noticed that many underground concerts are picking up methods from outdoor rave culture and only get announced in telegram groups for which you need to know people to get in ...

So THIS is the scam that almost got Franchesca Ramsey and may have nabbed a page of one of my fave drag queens. I'm one of the dinos still on Facebook, but being born in 1990 keeps me on there so I'm in the loop with family events and occasionally see an update from peeps I met in college. Also I just can't be bothered by TikTok, never really clicked with Twitter and finally left in 2017, and hardly use IG. My KZbin account is nearly 18 years old, so the algorithm is already trained to my extremely eclectic tastes. Thanks for taking the time to share your story! I'm happy to hear that you have a solid offline community. I'm not there yet, so seeing you blossom in recent years by making offline connections with people is encouraging to see.

this is so infuriating and i can see how scary that is. its never shameful to be scammed, anyone can get scammed at any time none of us are truly immune. it really sucks this happened to you though, im so sorry :( bc thats awful i hate facebook though. i deactivated but i'll prob go to the trouble of deleting it entirely one of these days. even when i was trying to use it to see family members posts, my feed was fulllllllllll of "suggested posts" that were so random and half of them were AI images. it was difficult to even see a single post from anyone of my friends on there. im only still on instagram to stay connected to my internet friends around the globe bc at least on instagram i can actually see when they post (even if they do make it an extra step for chronological order, i still see their stories posts and can connect with them easily that way) ugh i hate the way censorship on the internet has become so much

I cook most of the meals for my family and anytime I'm stumped on what to make that day, I just go on facebook and scroll for a bit and I'll have some new thing we've never tried before and it'll be amazing. That's about it, though. Otherwise, yeah, Facebook is a trashheap now.

I’ve embraced my body hair and don’t shave/wax often. Maybe once a month because I used to get so obsessed with “perfecting” womanhood/girlhood. I am made up of both feminine and masculine energy and traits. I live in my masculine often especially because I run my own business and work in sales/marketing but at the end of the day I’m a woman with high testosterone levels and it’s okay. I’m still a woman and I’m still perfectly fine as I am.

It's honestly a really interesting study in how self doubt and other maladaptive cognition and behaviors cause one to completely lose perspective. You were combatting the doubt and self sabotage so hard that you were overlooking significant red flags others who don't have to fight with their minds would have been free to easily spot. Please appreciate - in no way an I moralizing or indicting these decisions, I just think it's really interesting and very relatable.

Ahhhh- I remember I needed help because i was being over charged for instagram ads I never ran. I guess it’s fairly common, to the point where the state of California had to create a separate phone line for this specific issue to help its residents/build a case to sue meta. Thankfully I was just able to dispute it with my bank and replace my debit card, but it’s unfortunate such a big company that has the money to help its users refuses not to. The fact that they could not even bother to help one of their own verified users speaks volumes. I’m sorry your account is lost :(.

You aren’t lying re: Facebook. I quit using it like 4-5 years ago completely. Deactivated my account and quit social media. Then this year I logged on for the first time just to grab some photos and wow is it terrible now. It’s all ads, and most of them are fake AI-generated bullshit. For every 2-3 posts from someone I follow, there’s an ad now. Who wants that? Who likes this?

Thank you for speaking up about this. I feel like many of us think of ourselves as too clever to fall for scams, so hearing someone as intelligent and tech savvy as you describe being scammed is helping your audience firstly by humbling us- if you aren't immune to scammers then I know I definitely am not, and also by detailing how they did it so we can have a better idea of the red flags to look out for. The dead internet theory stuff is so bleak. I wonder if people will just create some new form of communication in a few years that's essentially Internet 2: This Time With No Bots! (For Now)
