You may want to look into the glazing technique with oil painting. That may give you some of the look you are trying to achieve.

I was thinking this as well. A fantasy artist named Jeff Miracola has excellent DVD tutorials on both acrylic and oil painting where he uses glazes to get amazing light effects.

Totally relate to what you say about falling out of love with a piece. I paint as a hobby and sometimes work takes so time away from my art that I end up with a bunch of unfinished sketches :( I've been trying to motivate myself to retake old sketches...

Fear of failure has pretty much dominated and ruined my life up to this point. I have avoided doing work so much that I ended up with some fairly decent skills but absolutely no finished pieces. Honestly it has destroyed my career.
