The Ethiopian-born Dutch athlete triumphed despite falling off the pace and clutching her hip around the 15-mile mark - and almost colliding with a motorbike later in the race. The 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic champion stormed back to triumph in two hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds and admitted that she had been 'so scared' to run a marathon before the race begun, asking herself 'what is wrong with me?'
In the men's race, Kelvin Kiptum recored the second fastest time in history over the distance. The 23-year-old Kenyan runner broke the course record with a time of two hours, one minute, 25 seconds and just missed out on Eliud Kipchoge’s world record by 16 seconds.
