Rafi, I have no idea if you will read this or not. But let me tell you 100% I understand exactly what you are talking about. The same thing happened with me except instead of Buddhism it was Christianity. One of my childhood lifelong bestfriends suddenly converted to something called orthodox Christianity. I had no idea this would happen, but he’s turned into a completely different person now. Every single conversation we have now feels like he is trying to secretly manipulate me into converting to the Orthodox Church or trying to get me to go to church with him. Hes now my college roomate. He’s gotten me to go multiple times, and every time I have gone, it’s just been this robotic, weird chanting where they just keep repeating the same thing. And then they get spoon-fed like little birds the bread and wine by a priest. All the while, the wine is like dripping down onto their chins and the priest wipes it for them. They all kept trying to hug me after the service and all they cared about is trying to get me to come again and eventually convert. My friend constantly loves to try to discreetly bring it up to me and remind me of how orthodox Christians are the only Christian’s and that me being a “Protestant” means I’m going to hell because I’m a heretical schismatic. Only through his eastern church can one attain salvation and ever hope to live a good life. It’s beginning to concern me, and I’m just going to tell him again that I’m not joining. He’s probably going to say “ok but the ecumenical councils and you need a priest for the Eucharist and we’re the only connection to God” and all this stuff. At this point, it feels like I’m constantly having to try and defend why I’m not going to convert. It’s like a “if I lose the debate, I have no choice but to convert to orthodoxy” sort of mentality he has. Because every time he brings it up, he’s like “you’ll be so much happier once you’re a catechumen and have joined the bride of Christ.” The thing is, I don’t want to debate with him and I simply want to be able to think for myself and make my own informed decisions. But his church merely proves itself by things the church says itself. It’s complete circular reasoning, but this is when he brings up the whole “mysteries of the church” thing and tells me I have a “western” way of thinking and I need to give up my egotistical rationalism. Seeing this really put it into perspective how everyone always thinks they have the right answer. I think the most intelligent people are those who understand the independence of each individual mind and don’t try to use manipulative tactics to covert people to their belief systems. Edit: shrine

I had a similar experience in Osaka, with an old dude coming up to me, asking where Im from, what Im doing here etc etc. We kept talking about differences between the west and Japan and cultures and different mindsets, all that kind of stuff. The more he talked, for example about how he applied to the government of Canada for immigration visa, because he's being chased by the Japanese government, the more I became suspicious. After like 15minutes or something he started to briefly mention that he's a writer. From that point on he ignored any questions from me and just kept talking about his work. And yes of course the only reason he wanted to talk with me, was because he wanted to sell his awful books, made out of pages of paper, stapled together by nothing but a small staple. Didnt buy anthing and left. Its so disappointing to realize they really dont give a shit about you and you fell for it. Definitely not as dangerous as your encounter, but both show what is likely to happen to you, when youre a foreigner in Japan.shrine

#Shrine! Those wires are above a ground level due to frequent earthquake Japan suffers for. If it was under ground it'll get cut and teared apart by every stronger earthquake. So it's above ground level to be more flexible and easier to repair. I'm glad you've got out of that cult alright.

What if my comment isn’t nice Rafi 😈 I’m nefarious like that, out of a villain story. Me leaving a comment deprived of all tonality that might make it slightly amusing haha. But honestly casually encountering “shrines” . . . 👁️👁️ . . . has to be one of the funnest aspects when in Japan especially in the cities Btw glad you’re safe, I doubt they’ll be able to do anything if somehow they registered you, hopefully you’re good on that end. You are super friendly to strangers though, I can really appreciate that mindset, polar opposite of my nyc rotted brain, it’s unfortunate these guys took advantage of your good natured
